Two minutes silence was maintained in the memory of Prof. Khandwala. This was followed by Bhajans by Ms. Preeti Bhatt. >From the eighty five people present, dignitaries such as Ms. Kamaliniben Bhansali (Ex- Vice Chancellor), Dr. Ms. Jyotiben Trivedi (Ex- Vice Cancellor ), Prof. Harsha Parekh (Ex- University Librarian SNDT Women�s Univ.), Dr. S. R. Ganpule (Ex- Univerity Librarian, Univ. of Mumbai) shared their memories of the golden times with Prof. Khandwala. On behalf of the past students Dr. Maya Avasia (Asiatic Society of Mumbai) paid her respect to Prof Khandwala and spoke about how Ms. Khandwala encouraged her students to go ahead and contribute to the field. Dr Perin Marolia (SHPT School of Library Science) remembered her for her unique quality i.e. her Memory and Creativity. �She was the only Head who knew each & every student. She could spot the weakness of the individual stundents and help them to overcome it,� said Ms. Parvati V. (American Information Resource Center). Ms. Parvati V. also highlighted Prof. Khandwala�s achievements. Mrs. Sushama Powdwal read out the message of the present Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rupa Shah. A display of Photographs of Prof. Khandwala with various dignitaries in the library was organized. A poem was written by Ms. Sunanda Mahajan describing Prof. Khandwala�s personality was put up. Keeping in mind the dream and vision of Prof. Khandwala, SHPT School of Library Science past students Association started �Prof Vidyut Khandwala Fund� for giving Scholarship/ Internship for the needy and worthy students. Rs. 30,000/- was collected on the spot. Contribution to this fund is still pouring in from India & abroad. We hope a substantial corpus will be developed. We welcome contributions for this fund. Universities can be ranked based on web indicators

Aguillo, Begoña Granadino, Jose Luis Ortega and Jose Antonio Prieto The Web has changed the way in which many researchers access scientific information, conduct research, communicate their findings, and share data. There is now a need to assess the impact of Web publication in order to promote wider and better use of this new medium. Recent attempts have been made to go beyond the strict use of bibliometric indicators. Shanghai Jiao Tong University has published a ranking of the top 500 universities, in which numbers of publications and citations were combined with other criteria such as institution size or the number of Nobel prizes awarded to alumni. The Web offers advantages as institutions represent "natural units," with their own institutional domains that mark their presence on the Internet. Since most institutions have a specific Internet domain or subdomain for all their Web pages, quantitative data can be extracted using specifically designed crawlers, or the robots of the major search engines. The contents of these institutional Web sites might include not only final papers or preprints, but also valuable information on other aspects of their scientific activities. Raw data, teaching materials, slides produced for meetings or conferences, in-house software, graphs, media files, and even administrative information might be useful to pupils, colleagues, and partners worldwide. Since the Web is ubiquitous, a wider audience is possible when publication is electronic; this could include readers in developing countries whose access to scientific publications can be very restricted. The Web is cheaper than the printed word and can provide information that paper sources could never contain; for example, large amounts of data, complex and dynamic graphics, or even interactive systems. Finally, the Web is a hypertext-interlinked system, and although the motivations for linking far exceed traditional "citation for recognition," careful use of citation analysis techniques may still be possible. Web indicators are now becoming important in the quantitative analysis of science, but a global system involving the major universities and research institutions has yet to be developed. To fill this gap, we designed a combined assessment model for ranking the institutional domains of universities worldwide based on "Web presence" indicators. Three different features of these domains were assessed: the size of their Web presence (measured by the number of Web pages), visibility (reflected by the number of in-links from pages external to the domain), and the number of "rich" files available (the number of downloadable files in advanced formats such as Adobe Acrobat - pdf, PostScript - ps, MS Word - doc, MS PowerPoint - ppt, and MS Excel - xls). While evaluations were made in absolute terms, the fact that research and other activities involve specific file types was taken into account. The number of in-links to these organizations' Web sites was used to establish the visibility of their content to third parties, including other academic and scientific organizations, government authorities, and companies. Data were collected using the major search engines. The full results are available from "Ranking of World Universities in the Web" [http://www.webometrics.info] where the first 1,000 universities are listed according to Web criteria. Preliminary analysis shows that most productive research-oriented universities are among the leaders in the list. A significant positive correlation was found between the Web list ranks and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University list. Moreover, a large number of technologically oriented institutions were well-positioned by the Webometric indicators. The universities of developing countries (especially of the larger nations) appeared in competitive positions with regard to those of the developed world. There are still several technical and methodological problems to overcome, mostly related with the search engine bias. More relevant, there are several shortcomings and caveats related to the use of Web indicators for assessing visibility and impact. These are not yet developed enough to compare directly to bibliometric ones, but we intend to use non-Webometric indicators in our rankings to allow a direct comparison of the different approaches. Elsevier Enhances Scopus

Scopus, the abstract and indexing (A&I) database of scientific, technological, and medical research information developed last year by Elsevier, has apparently beat all expectations for the success of its market adoption. In June, 6 months after its launch, the company announced it had signed its 500th customer. And, following an agreement with the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC; http://www.jisc.ac.uk) more than 60 universities in the U.K. are now taking part in the introductory offer for Scopus. Today, July 18, Scopus is announcing a range of new updates and features that further its mission of providing an easy-to-use, comprehensive system for conducting scientific research. The product is not viewed as a stand-alone, but rather as one that fits within the research process and supports the workflow by seamlessly integrating third-party research tools. New features being introduced include close integration with RefWorks, the bibliographic management tool from CSA; interoperability with the chemical structure searching in MDL?s CrossFire Commander; and several content integration enhancements. In November 2004, Elsevier launched Scopus, its ambitious project designed in close collaboration with librarians and researchers that promised to be the most comprehensive STM database. At the time, Elsevier said that it aimed to make the Scopus service ?as easy to use as Google,? with fewer clicks to the full text than any service available. Pls choose whichever you feel is suitable one for you. As MP3 is already a compressed format of audio, WMA is the next option.(eg. On an avg 120 MP3 songs can be burnt on a CD, where as if WMA is the choice, a CD can hold upto 200 songs Apprx.) There are lots of converters available. You are sure to loose the quality if you compress audio files. If WAVE format has surround sound, then if you compress it to MP3 it may loose quality and further down if you convert it to WMA. The Audit people are pressing hard to conduct the Stock Verification. Being in the same system, u can better understand the problem.
