Sorry for cross postings. Dear All, We have started a OAI-based harvesting service (service provider) to harvest metadata from various OAI compliant Institutional Repositories (IR) in India at National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science. Wherein it provides a single point access of harvested metadata of registered repositories using a simple web based interface. This service is also registered to www.openarchives.org. Currently 15 Indian OAI repositories have been indexed. You can visit the site http://casin.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/oai/ to access the metadata information of harvested repositories. We request you that if your IR has not been registered to our site then please register to the harvester hosted at NCSI so that harvester can harvest your repository periodically. It can be done by visiting the URL http://casin.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/oai/. In case any problem we can be contacted by the email ID: harvester(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in. SHPT SCHOOL OF LIBRARY SCIENCE PAST STUDENTS ASSOCIATION Mumbai 400020     Dear all,   Here is the invitation for our first programme of our association for the year 2007.   Looking back to your appreciation for the lecture on Digital Libraries by Prof. Neuhold in 2004, here is one more opportunity to meet another German scholar Dr. Rafael Ball.         Dr. Ball will speak on Innovative Services of a Special Library Dr. Rafael Ball has done his doctorate in Biology and has worked in the library sector since 1994. At present he is Head of the Central Library of Research Centre Jülich. Dr Ball is member of various library bodies and associations. He has widely published in national and international specialist journals and participated in conferences and workshops at home and abroad. The main areas of his practical and theoretical work are library management, scholarly communication, scientometrics and the development of new digital library services.   The future of library services must be considered against the background of a new self-conception of libraries and their definition and of a changing information society. In future, the proactivity of the library and its contribution to the overall enterprise or institution will be defined by a wide range of new business areas and innovative activities. Dr. Balls presentation will assess the current status of scholarly communication in libraries. ACTREC is looking for young and dynamic freshers for induction as LIBRARY TRAINEES for a period of six months which may be extendable up to one year Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), situated in 60 acre land at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai is a new state of the art R & D satellite of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC). The Institute comprises of basic research wing and clinical research centre. It also has a 50- bed hospital fully equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. ACTREC has the mandate to function as a national centre for treatment, research and education in cancer. The Institute library is fully automated and all its functions & services are operated on LibSuite (ASP version) software. It houses over 15000 books and back volumes of journals and has access to over 2000 journals through ScienceDirect and other online databases round the clock. Thesis, Institutional Reports, Staff Publications, CD ROMs, Video Cassettes are the other resources available to all Scientific Community. The library has plans to digitize its Thesis collection and introduce enhanced electronic information services in the coming years. Interested candidate should have Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (MLISc) with first class from a recognized University. Candidate in the age group of 25 years with Science background, knowledge of library software and computer skills will have an added advantage. The selected candidate will be paid a stipend of Rs.4000/- per month with accommodation facilities in the Institute hostel which is located in the campus. Trainee may have to work during flexible hours on all working days including week ends. Trainee appointed will have an opportunity to work in a computerized library with hands-on-experience on all library procedures and exposure to modern techniques of maintaining scientific and medical library. Dr R.Ball, Head of the Central Library of Research Centre Jülich, Germany will be the main speaker. Dr Ball has been in the profession of Library Science since 1994 and has served both as a teacher of library science as well as a librarian. FREE VIRTUAL PC FROM MICROSOFT

How often have you wished you could run two or more operating systems simultaneously on your computer? A lot of people indeed do that, but doing so isn?t easy for a non-geek. Now you can do it, and for free, courtesy the software giant Microsoft. Yes, the company's latest version of Virtual PC 2007 is now available for free download from its website. In simple terms, Virtual PC is a virtualization suite for Microsoft Windows operating systems. Virtual PC emulates a standard PC and its associated hardware. Thus, it can be used to run nearly all operating systems available for the PC. With virtual technology, users can simply switch back to a previous state. They can install their virtual operating system and save the current state (ie. the current installation) and then switch back to that, at a later date. Users can use the virtual machine to run OS such as MS-DOS, Windows, and OS/2. They can run multiple OS simultaneously on a single physical computer and toggle between them as easily as switching applications-instantly, at the click of a mouse! In fact, the choice of the OS can be made from a simple drop-down menu. It has another very important purpose. For instance, instead of trying and testing software on their computer, users can install a virtual PC for this purpose. This means that they can freely install as much software as they wish, without the installation affecting their everyday state of the computer. They can thus decide what software they would like to use, before installing it on their computer, for real. The 2007 version adds support for Windows Vista as a host, as well as Windows Vista as a guest. The PROGRAMME is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and is supported on all versions of Windows XP (except Home and Media Center Editions) and Windows Server 2003. The file is a 30 MB download and requires a 400 MHz or faster (1 GHz recommended) processor and enough RAM to support the desired configuration for the guest operating system plus the host.
