The March 16 deadline for 2008 applications for the IFLA/OCLC Early Career Fellowship Program is fast approaching! In an ongoing effort to encourage qualified applicants, we'd like to remind potential candidates about this program. Please see http://www.oclc.org/education/earlycareer/default.htm Introduction This program, jointly sponsored by the American Theological Library Association, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), OCLC Online Computer Library Center and OCLC PICA, provides early career development and continuing education for library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies. Program overview On an annual basis, up to five individuals, including a theological librarian, are selected for participation in this intensive five-week Fellowship program. Four weeks are based at OCLCs headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA; one week is based at OCLC PICA in Leiden, Netherlands. The program includes lectures, seminars and mentoring and gives Fellows opportunities to explore topics including information technologies, library operations and management, and global cooperative librarianship. The Fellows visit selected North American and European libraries, cultural heritage institutions and library organizations. The Fellows also observe portions of an OCLC Members Council meeting, gaining insight into issues affecting global library cooperation and the governance of a global library cooperative. Fellows give presentations about their home countries and libraries, meet leading practitioners and discuss real-world solutions to the challenges facing libraries today. XML-BASED INTERNET OPERATING SYSTEM (XIOS)

In the third quarter of 2007, an all-but-unknown Swedish software company (Xcerion) plans to release a new, free operating system that has the potential to radically alter the economics of software development. If successful, it may be able to further erode the power Microsoft derives from control of the desktop, to beat Google at its software-as-a-service play, and to make commodity Linux boxes more viable as a computing platform for the masses. For the past five years, Xcerion has been working on an XML-based Internet operating system (XIOS) that runs inside a Web browser. Conservapedia: How it is different from Wikipedia

Conservapedia (http://www.conservapedia.com/Main_Page) was created last November as a project for home-schooled children, based on the Wikipedia concept but without the "liberal bias". According to calculations by the site's owners, "Wikipedia is six times more liberal than the American public". Interestingly, the most viewed item on Conservapedia is Examples of Bias in Wikipedia.
