Mumbai gets its First Digital Library Pankhuri Bajaj, Aug 18, 2009 Source: http://www.techtree.com/India/News/Mumbai_gets_its_First_Digital_Library/55… Bridging the digital divide Mumbai now has its very first fully-loaded State Central Library Digital Centre; courtesy: the Government of Maharashtra. This state-of-the-art library is housed in a 3-storey building in Andheri East. The facilities provided in this library are open to all and are for free. What's a Digital Library? While a digital library is typically a library that stores content stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform, or other media) and accessible by computers, this library consists of printed reading material as well. Other than digital content via CD/DVD-ROMs and the Internet, this Digital Library also houses select books on various topics like art, politics, history, technology, history, etc. Further, there's a whole array of help books/digital content for students preparing for various entrance exams. Structure The digital library has been the brainchild of Andheri East MLA Suresh Shetty, who is also Maharashtra's minister of state of higher and technical education. If you like the decor of the library, you should know that he had a say in it. Dr. BE Sananse, librarian of the Digital Library, was kind enough to give us a tour of this exclusive library just before it was inaugurated. The ground floor houses an an Xbox 360, a multimedia-capable computer for kids to view digital content (Encyclopedias, movies, games, study material) from the selection available. There are books also in Hindi, English and Marathi. This area of the library is meant for children and senior citizens, although it is unlikely for someone to object your presence there if you don't fall in that age group. The first floor is a regular library with has 48 LCD computers with internet connectivity via MTNL Triband. The library consists of 200 CDs, DVDs and specialized legal database covering databases of DELNET, Manuputra (legal database covering supreme court judgments 1950 onwards) and British Council Library (BCL) meant for researchers and scholars to utilize the centre. In case you're wondering about the computer configuration, you'll be pleased to know that all of the HCL computers installed there are powered by Intel Core2 Duo 3Ghz CPU, 2GB Ram, and Windows XP Service Pack 3. The second floor is again has more books and there's more space, what looks like space for computer workstations, but the librarian insists it's meant for people to read books. Fair enough! The third floor is an Audio-Visual, or AV room, fully equipped with a computer, a projector, and speakers. Adjoining this large space is the swanky office of the librarian, Dr. BE Sananse. He was kind enough to give me a tour of this exclusive library just before it was inaugurated. And yes, when you do visit the place, do not miss the lovely cafeteria on the third floor. Once they have the coffee vending machine in place, it should be a delight to relax after a good read over here. How to Get There? Ranganathan's Day Celebration 2009-2010 & Seminar on 'Best practices in library and information centre' "The concept of library is changing. It will be digitalised soon," said NRI Forum Deputy Chairman Capt Ganesh Karnik. Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on 'Best practices in library and information centre' organised jointly by the Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association in association with St Agnes College library on Wednesday, 19th August, 2009 at the Conference hall , St.Agnes College, he said the library will be available on net. World is changing at the faster rate. He said the education is not mere producing graduates and skilled labourers to the required market. It is also giving knowledge to the students on facing life. Education institutions should convert student population to human resources.Librarians can contribute by opening the other windows of the world by accessing sources of knowledge to the students. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre's Prof I K Ravichandra Rao said the role of books, libraries and librarians are changing today. Earlier, library catalogue was the only source for seraching the books in the library. However, now catalogues of various libraries can be accessed with a touch of a button. He said the principles of classification laid down by Father of Indian Library Movement Dr S R Ranganathan are relevant even to this day than what it was in 1940s. Libraries must accept the change, he added. RANGANATHA'S DAY CELEBRATION AT ST.AGNES COLLEGE, MANGALORE The department o f Library and Research and Development Cell of St.Agnes College, Mangalore organized an informative exhibition on "RESEARCH DOCUMENTS" on 12th August ,2009 at St.Agnes College library. The documents like theses, dissertations, project reports, honours programme reports, publications, associations and Cells reports of the faculty and students were exhibited. The exhibition has been inaugurated by the former Vice- Chancellor of Kannur and Calicul Universities, Prof. Dr.Abdul Rahiman, who not only appreciated the organizers for this innovative idea of exhibiting the research documents but also stressed that this exhibition should inspire and motivate many more research aspirants to get into research and bringing out their publications. The Keynote address has been delivered by Prof.K.V.Rao , Director of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, Mangalore, who in his address narrated that, though in the modern technological world, information is available on the click of the mouse, it is the responsibility of the researchers and users to analyse and evaluate every aspect of information available with them..He also stated that librarians are the resource persons to give proper direction to the readers in the search of information. Dr.Sr.Prem M.D'Souza the Principal of the College presided over the function. Dr.VishalaB.K.-Coordinator of Research and Development Cell and Selection Grade librarian, who co ordinated the exhibition, briefed the purpose of the exhibition and the importance of celebrating the birth date of Dr.S.R.Ranganathan as Librarians Day. Prof.Lingappa Gowda welcomed the gathering, Mrs.Kavitha, Asst. Librarian proposed vote of thanks and Mrs.Malavika Adyanthaya compared the programme. The exhibition was open from 12-08-2009 to 19-08-2009 to the colleges affiliated to Mangalore University and non professional colleges of Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Udupi districes. The faculty and librarians of various colleges availed the benefit of accessing the research documents. Dear Professionals, I'm greatful to see that Dr. Amit Chatterjee, Prof.P.B.Mangla, Raghunath and many of you provided inputs on the thought. As rightly mentioned, I beleive Selecting, analysing, organizing infn is ultimately for dissemination purpose. More importantly infn acquistion is also the main skill to acquire again for dissemination purpose, not in a traditional like more in a style suggested by Dr. Chatterjee. As Dr. Chatterjee rightly advised, librarians should come out of our traditional role taught in library schools and learn as many information (acquisition, organisation, networking etc.) skills as possible. Further, we shall request knowledge commission to call us 'information dissemination industry personnel' and work under single title and extend our services for effective dissemination of information. It's a time to prove ourselves and out skills seperately than IT professionals.
