Dear Professionals/Friends, I would like to inform you about the new initiative taken to strengthen the LIS profession and society via the social network entitled "HELP DESK FOR LIBRARY AND SOCIETY" (HDLS). Kindly visit the website (http://lishelp.ning.com)which will be formally launch on 14th November, 2009 i.e. on first day of National library week. Till 14th November kindly evaluate and also sign up/register and let me know any problem and suggest what other pin pointed information can be placed on the site as per its aim & objective. The aim of the Initiative TO STRENGTHEN THE LIBRARY PROFESSION/PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIETY OBJECTIVES 1. To inform library professionals and society about the recent happenings/events. 2. Integrating library automation package with digital library software and workshop material

*** Apologies for cross posting a long mail *** As part of a project entitled "Enhancing Knowledge Innovation Culture of Libraries through Union Catalogue" carried out at National Centre for Science Information, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, funded by The International Development Research Centre, Canada, a prototype union catalog is created using Koha, a open source library automation software with 4 different collections: 1. Records from a big library (about 120,000 records) 2. Records from a medium size library (about 20,000 records) 3. A few multilingual records downloaded from the Net and 4. About 15 e-books downloaded from the Net, which do not violate copyright law. With these four collections we have successfully addressed the issues of data mining, data migration, bulk import, multilingual records handling and full text searching (using both Greenstone and Fedora Commons) in a library automation package. All these are carried out using Koha as it supports developmental work. The implementation of these can be accessed at: http://dharmaganja.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in:8082/ Though we have extensively tested other software: NewGenLib, PMB, Vufind and Evergreen (library automation package), because of clashes with the supporting software versions, we have not implemented them on the server. A series of workshops was organized to train manpower in using the available technological tools for library automation (Koha, NewGenLib, PMB, Vufind, MarcEdit, Greenstone, Fedora Commons, PHP and CSS tutorials, Ubuntu installation). Dear Friends, The first-ever international awareness week for Open Access to research, is celebrated this week from 19th to 23rd Oct 2009 in over 30 countries. ( http://www.openaccessweek.org) Many research institutions in India have supported the Open Access Movement by creating the Open Access Repositories of their research contents open to scientific & research community all over the world in different ways. At Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) the library has taken the responsibility to create and maintain the OA Repository of the Institutes research contents. (http://prints.iiap.res.in) During this “Open Access Week” we have designed and brought out special poster on the importance and benefits of “Open Access” to scholarly contents and displayed it within the campus to create awareness among the faculty & students. We have also taken the efforts to upload more number of research papers into the repository during this week to reach the target of 5000 records as the contents of the repository.
