Dear Friends, Bangalore University library fund is a reality now The Bangalore University library committee has unanimously recommended to charge Rs 20 per student per year from government colleges, and open a separate account called the University Library Fund. BU will charge Rs 50 per student per year from private affiliated colleges. At a meeting on Saturday under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev, the committee decided to open the account in SBM, Nagarbhavi branch. There, library fee and money collected from UG and PG courses will be deposited. The fund will be used to develop library facilities. The committee will develop collection of study material for under-graduate students in Central College library. It will also provide 24-hour service to teachers and students. It plans to develop Bangalore University Academic Network (Balnet) to share books and journals on an inter-library loan. Other Decisions by the committe are,* *1. Enhance library budget from Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore, 2. Digitize rare books, thesis 3. Software to detect percentage of copied material in thesis and related work, 4. Ensure recent and popular books are bought, 5. The library will be open 24 hours. Dear Professional Colleagues, As there is increased interest in forming Consortia/Library networking at national, regional and institutional levels in govt. and private sectors. I thought of collecting data on the topic for clear understanding. For this purpose, I browsed INFLIBNET & VIDYANIDHI websites and back issues University News (since 1984) for research Studies on LIS Research India. I could trace nearly 1000 doctoral dissertations in LIS field awarded by Indian Universities over the period. From the pool, I could trace 44 doctoral dissertations(awarded) as mentioned below. Still, I feel the data may not be comprehensive on the topic. Though it is essential for all universities to submit the data related to doctoral research to AIU (Publish this data through University News as theses of the month) I feel it is not followed by all Indian universities. Uploading data on INFLIBNET is voluntary for researchers. Hence I think there could be more doctoral studies on Consortium. Please see the following list and inform me if your name/thesis (on Consortium or library network) is missing in the list. For missing theses data, please give data on 1) your full name; 2) title of thesis; 3) Guide's name;4)university; 5) year of award and some keywords and your email-id. I will compile the list and again post it for the benefit of our LIS professionals and researchers. Dear Friends, School libraries to get popular Your school library may now be stocked up with the latest from the printed world. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) plans to introduce a reading project for upper-primary and secondary classes very soon. This calls for upgrading school library allocating a reasonable sum of the annual budget for buying books, CDs and reference material. Children should be encouraged to visit the library whenever they want and a number of notices put up to encourage children to read books and inform them on books available in the library. Vocabulary-building games can be a part of the collection. * *Teachers can give students books of one genre which can be read by the whole class. The books under this project should not be taught in class but introduced through activities. “It should be left to students to read at their own pace. Teachers may, however, choose to assess a child’s progress in reading the book by asking for verbal or written progress reports, looking at the diary entries of students, engaging in a discussion about the book, giving a short quiz or a worksheet about the book/ short story,” the board said.
