The Association embarked on the first General Body Meeting at* Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur* in June 1973, and decided to publish a periodical entitled “AALDI Bulletin” annually to give vent to the intellectual thought of the Agricultural Library Professionals. The efforts of the Association bore fruit in 1974 when the first volume of the periodical saw the light. To keep in pace with the changing scenario and concepts of librarianship, the title of the periodical was changed to *Indian Journal of Agricultural Library & Information Science in 1983*, and as* Indian Journal of Agricultural Library & Information Services in 2008*. Due to some unavoidable circumstances the Association became dormant and slowly passed into hibernation after 1993. It was revived during a Workshop on “KrishiPrabha - Indian Agricultural Dissertation Repository” held at *Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University*, Hisar 0n 24.2.2008. *ICAR Library, Indian Council of Agricultural Research H.Q, New Delhi* ICAR library was established in 1929 under one of the mandates of ICAR to render the information services to Scientists, Researchers, Policy makers, Farmers, Research managers etc. Its collection and clientale are specialized in agriculture and its allied sciences. The physical location of the library has been made in two locations i.e at Krishi Bhavan and Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan . The publications of Crop Sciences, Animal sciences and general interest like literature, religion, music, philosophy, culture, Indian constitution under theme "Indiana" and publications of Reference natured are kept in Krishi Bhavan and scientific literature on Veterinary, Dairy, Horticulture, Soil sciences, Engineering etc., are at Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan, Pusa. ICAR Library, Krishi Bhavan has been modernized, barcoded and computerized by using latest information technology and developed Information Kiosks, internet Surfing, On-line catalogue etc .The mandatory housekeeping activities of library have been automatized by using "e-Granthalaya<http://mcitconsortium.nic.in/>" software developed by the NIC <http://home.nic.in/> . Online Databases & Services of ICAR library can be accessed from * http://www.icarlibrary.nic.in* *Library Information System , IASRI (Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute), New Delhi.* The Library Information System (LIS) of IASRI was established in 1968 and it has an excellent print and electronic resource base in the fields of Agricultural Statistics, Computer applications, Agricultural Economics and allied fields to support teaching, research and consultancy in the relevant areas. This is the referral and sole library in Agricultural Statistics and Computer Applications in India. It caters the information needs of Scientists, students, faculty and researchers, trainees of not only IASRI but also NARS in both conventional as well as in electronic. It is wastage of time to a regular reader of LIS forum like me to read everything for getting few qualified information. *Report of Informatics Endowment Lecture Series - 7 * Organizing the 7th Informatics Endowment Lecture Series on the 10th of February was a pleasant coincident with Informatics itself completing 30 years of its existence in the information business. The alma mater of N V Satyanarayana was very proud to hold this lecture series by Prof. Ramani who was at the University of Mysore, to deliver INFORMATICS ENDOWMENT LECTURE SERIES ON DIGITAL LIBRARIES – 7 on *Structured Information and Information Technology*. He started his lecture with a quote; “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing! Jimmy Wales”. He started his lecture with a remark about the volume of information that is being produced and the developments that are taken place in IT- Hardware, Software and Information Content. He dealt with several aspects relating to available web content forms and its economics. He gave a live demonstration of the results of a search that can be carried out on Google taking simple examples from E- Commerce and created curiosity among the audience regarding the accuracy of the information search and retrieval over the Web. He also touched on Web 2.0 movement and structured information and its potentialities and usability. He emphasized that there is ample scope for LIS professionals in facilitating information search and creating value added content and services. He was relating the present day Web Browsing to Browsing of books in a library. He was of the opinion that the structured data, tables, schemas help in collating information which is scattered over the Web. He was also of the view that the Semantic Web has not provided possible solution for the problem of accessing web content. The lecture was well attended by professionals from Bangalore, Mangalore, Mysore and the current batch of students and research scholars of the Department. A special thanks to Dr. K N Prasad, Executive Director, Dr. I R N Gouder, and Sri. V. L. Kalyan. Prof. Khaiser Nikam welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker, Dr. N. S. Harinarayana spoke about INFORMATICS and the ENDOWMENT LECTURE SERIES. Dr. K N Prasad was invited to present the engraved Silver Plaque to Prof. Ramani. And Dr. M. Moderated email forums: Is it too rigorous?

Dear All, Thanks to Internet, as we have a plenty of email discussion forums in LIS. In India, some of the discussion lists are moderated by List Owners, but others are free-for-all discussion groups without message filtering measures. Currently, the number of messages appearing in moderated lists is meagre when compared to the other category. If email from subscribers to a moderated list is not got posted, it is quite natural that they may bypass such lists. Is it a welcome trend? It is argued that any member of a list can take part in a conversation or begin a new topic without any difficulties. The question is: Is there any need for rigorous reviewing/filtering measures in moderated email discussion forums in LIS? * * * * -- Saji S. Venkatachalam, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (second from left), at the launch of the digital library portal of AIISH in Mysore on Wednesday. MYSORE: V. Venkatachalam, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, on Wednesday said that the Ministry was doing its best to overcome manpower shortage that affected national health programmes, including the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD). Scarcity of professionals in the field of speech and hearing was acute and the Ministry was addressing the problem by supporting the initiatives taken up by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), he said. Launching the Digital Library Portal of the AIISH Library and Information Centre here, Mr. Venkatachalam said the national programmes launched for public health lacked trained professionals. “Manpower is not available to support the initiatives launched under the programmes. Therefore, we have introduced a few initiatives to ensure manpower to implement the programmes,” he said. Promising support and resources to AIISH in carrying forward its activities, he said the Ministry had been supporting its programmes and would continue to do so for its development. Infrastructure at the institute was on par with any other national institute, he said. Lauding AIISH for launching the Digital Library Portal, he said the portal would benefit many as information available in the library could be accessed from anywhere, anytime. He said the portal would also help those pursuing courses under distance education system launched by AIISH to overcome the shortage of speech and hearing professionals. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore V.G. Talawar said the facilities provided for accessing information digitally should be used effectively. Not many scholars, academics and teachers were making use of the e-journal facility launched by the Universities Grants Commission (UGC) in which over 5,000 journals could be accessed online. “According to some surveys, only 39 per cent are making use of the facility though the journals are available in all disciplines. It is not a good trend. More and more people should make use of information for their academic prospects,” Dr. Talawar said. He urged students, research scholars and therapists to use the portal of AIISH. AIISH Director Vijayalakshmi Basavaraj said the portal was conceived two years ago and could be accessed free of cost. Shortly, the National Medical Library in New Delhi could be accessed through the portal as its approval was awaited. “Once it is done, over 1,532 journals can be accessed from our portal,” she said. Ajish Abraham, head of the Department of Electronics, AIISH, gave an overview of the portal and its benefits. He said the availability of online search allowed users to locate relevant information quickly and reliably, thus enhancing success in their research endeavours.
