Dear Mr. Ghani, Thanks for showing the other side of the coin. I think this is an endless loop to blame the system, it is not only found in our profession but spread in all the disciplines. In my view, there is no parameters of quantity research, I can give many examples of great personalities in our profession who did there Ph.D along with the job and they are now prominent researcher. Its matter of research approach and hard work they made. You cannot tell that the people, who are doing their Ph.D by seating at the department, can only produce the useful theses. We can’t change the system in a day, but definitely we could aware about these facts and can put our efforts to make this profession as a respectable profession. In my personal view, money is not matter at all for prominent researcher and academician. Exception is everywhere and every profession, and we can’t remove in a day as our whole system is made like that. Govt is working towards improving the quality of higher education and certainly the things are moving faster and we could see the improvement in coming future. In this direction recently UGC has made the guidelines for minimum requirements to award the PhD degree, and also increased the nos. of JRF positions to promote the research and development. It’s a good indication for Indian research. As I noticed in the various vacancies coming to our field , It has clearly mentioned that those who has awarded PhD degree with UGC Regulation 2009 is exempted from the NET, it means the Ph.D is definitely going to be a good work with number of good publications not the useless efforts. So it does not matter that you are doing your ph.d along with your job, the work should be innovative and should have implication in respective field. 13 Ways to Protect Your Computer System

Dear colleagues, Like my last week posting on digital security and in addition to installing security products, follow these simple, common-sense precautions to reduce exposure and protect system. Let me clearly mention that passwords being used in gmail, yahoo mail, etc can be seen clealy if password cracker software are run on the systems you are using. This softwares are freely available on internet also. Do not open e-mail attachments from an unknown, suspicious, or untrustworthy source. If you're not familiar with the sender, do not open, download, or execute any files or e-mail attachments. Do not open an e-mail attachment unless you know what it is, even if it appears to come from a friend or someone you know. Some viruses replicate themselves and spread via e-mail. Stay on the safe side and confirm that the attachment was sent from a trusted source before you open it. Do not open any e-mail attachments if the subject line is questionable. If you feel that the attachment may be important to you, always save the file to your hard drive before you open it. Delete chain e-mails and other spam from your inbox. It's best not to forward or reply to messages like these. Unsolicited, intrusive mail clogs up networks, may contain annoying or offensive content, and may result in security and privacy risks. Exercise caution when downloading files from the Internet. Make sure that the Web site is legitimate and reputable. Verify that an anti-virus program has checked the files on the download site. If you have any doubts, don't download the file at all. If you download software from the Internet, be especially vigilant of free software, which often carries adware or other potentially unwanted content along with it. Always read the privacy policies and end-user license agreements (EULAs) for software you install, regardless of the source. Be especially wary of screensavers, games, browser add-ons, peer-to-peer (P2P) clients, and any downloads claiming to be “cracked” or free versions of expensive applications, such as Adobe® PhotoShop® or Microsoft® Office. Avoid downloads from non-Web sources altogether. The chances of downloading infected software from Usenet groups, IRC channels, instant messaging clients, or P2P is very high. Links to Web sites seen in IRC and instant messaging also frequently point to infected downloads. Avoid obtaining your software from these sources. Update your anti-virus software often. Threats are on the increase, and they are constantly evolving. Hundreds of viruses are discovered each month. To make sure that you are protected against the newest breed of threats, update your anti-virus software frequently. That means downloading the latest virus signature files and the most current version of the scanning engine. Back up your files frequently. If a virus infects your files, at least you can replace them with your back-up copy. It's a good idea to store your backup files (on CDs or flash drives) in another secure physical location away from your computer. Update your operating system, Web browser, and e-mail program on a regular basis. For example, you can get Microsoft® security updates for Microsoft® Windows® and Microsoft® Explorer at http://www.microsoft.com/security. Vigilance is the best defense against phishing scams. “Phishing” describes scams that attempt to acquire confidential information such as credit card numbers, personal identity data, and passwords by sending out e-mails that look like they come from real companies or trusted individuals. If you happen to receive an e-mail message announcing that your account will be closed, that you need to confirm an order, or that you need to verify your billing information, do not reply to the e-mail or click on any links. If you want to find out whether the e-mail is legitimate, you can contact the company or individual directly by calling or writing to them. Do not open messages or click on links from unknown users in your instant messaging program. Instant messaging can be a vehicle for transmitting viruses and other malicious code, and it’s another means of initiating phishing scams. Use a personal firewall. A software firewall runs on your PC and can protect you from both inbound and outbound attacks. Read pop-up message before clicking OK button. Most of the users click ‘OK’ button on POP-UP windows without reading the message. A malicious software may be asking permission before getting installed. The N-LIST project provides access to more than 2,100 electronic journals and 51,000 electronic books to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre. "Authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher's website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed in the INFLIBNET Centre," said an official press release. Faculty, staff students and researches from colleges covered under section 12B of University Grants Commission (UGC) Act are eligible to access e-resources through the N-LIST project. These colleges are required to register themselves on the N-LIST Website. Currently, 665 colleges are registered members. Registered colleges are issued Log-in IDs and passwords for their authorized users including faculty, staff, researchers and students. Colleges that are not covered under 2F/12B Act of the UGC may join as N-LIST Associate Members. The N-LIST Project is being jointly executed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre and the (INDEST-AICTE) Consortium, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The project provides for cross-subscription to e-resources subscribed by the two Consortia, i.e. subscription to INDEST-AICTE resources for universities and UGC-INFONET resources for technical institutions. Is this type of researcher will bring change who had their thesis copied by some one else, doing job abroad and their guide working on his/her behalf, deceiving the department and enjoying other monetary benefits on the name of data collection, paying a hefty amount to the supervisor of his/her income. Dear Colleagues, Swedish government founded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) (http://www.alma.se) in the memory of renowned author Astrid Lindgren as the world's largest prize for children's and young adult literature, in 2002. The Award total is Swedish krona five million, presented every year to authors, illustrators, oral storytellers and those active in reading promotion work.
