I feel Mr Jayakanthan can continue as the moderator and a set of youngsters can work closely with him and it is not a big deal for an organisation like IISc to continue the forum through its Domain. Weather the name is NCSI, IISc, Tata Memorial Library it is all the same.The Purpose for which the Forum was started should not be lost.The zeal with which T.B Rajashekar worked for the forum should be kept going.Few young enterents to the Profession of Library and Information Science can study the development of the forum for their MLISc assaignments. Closure of NCSI

Dear Members, The National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), IISc, Bangalore, does not exist anymore. The official dissolution order was issued recently. The Archives and Publications Cell at IISc will be occupying the erstwhile NCSI building. As per my choice, I have been transferred to the JRD Tata Memorial Library (JRDTML), IISc and have since reported for work there. My present contact details are appended to this mail. As many of you are aware, this discussion list (LIS-Forum) service is being administered from the erstwhile NCSI since 1997. With the closure of NCSI, there is a question mark about its continuity from the IISc domain. I haven't yet had a chance to discuss the matter related to the continuity of the LIS-Forum service from the JRDTML with the Library in-charge, JRDTML. Will do so at an earliest opportunity and let you know if the service would be continued from the JRDTML or its time for the change of the guard! Thanks very much Madhan. Ronald (Roly) Keating was educated at Westminster School for boys in London, followed by Balliol College at the University of Oxford, where he read Classics. He managed several divisions of BBC, an electronic media company, for much of his professional life. And now he will be managing one of the world's largest national libraries. Incidentally, Keating never went to a library school. Same is the case with James H Billington, the Librarian of Congress, Washington DC. He read history at Balliol College, Oxford, and Princeton University and later on taught history for many years. He wrote several books on Russian history. He had also not gone to a library school for formal training. His predecessor Daniel Boorstin was trained in Law and taught law for several years but wrote many history books and even won a Pulitzer Prize for history. He had also no formal training from a library school. In India, the qualifications and work experience prescribed for working in libraries would not have allowed Roly Keating, James Billington and Daniel Boorstin even to work in a high school or small town library. Different culture operate differently. Some insist on formal qualifications and for others it is OK if one can deliver! Keating's predecessor, Ms Lynne Brindley, of course, was a trained librarian. She studied librarianship at the School of Librarianship, University College London, where she was awarded the Sir John MacAlister award as the top student on her course. Closure of NCSI

Dear Professional Friends, It is indeed moving news about National Centre for Science Information (NCSI). I happen to witness its legacy in 1999 when Dr. TBR was heading the team. My friends were the interns of NCSI training program. My interactions with them have sharpened my technology skills. Till today, I was looking forward for training programs organized by NCSI. I rarely missed their programs. My sweet memories goes back to recall my participation in some of their programs. The last program that I attended, couple of years back, was the hands-on workshop on PMBILS and VuFind organized by Dr. Anuradha. It is not disparaging to others, if I tend to think that probably NCSI lost its glory along with Dr. TBR. The flagship training program was stopped in 2007 (?) and the talks, guest lectures and workshops which were very often in NCSI events calendar became very rare. NCSI was regarded as a center which showcased its performance of having all qualities and facilities to become i-School (Information School) producing professionals tuned perfectly to corporate and special libraries. MLISc completed graduates were eager to join NCSI with a strong career aspirations. I am saddened to understand that such an institute has been officially closed in 2012. LIS Forum was one of the offshoot services from NCSI. This was start quite early before other professions were yet to understand the concept of online discussion forum. Now, LIS-FORUM has grown as a big banyan tree. I am sure it has members from all parts the world. I am sure Dr. Francis will convince IISc to support this Forum which keeps NCSI in our mind and heart. If not, I would plead for taking over of LIS Forum by some Library Associations or LIS Departments at Universities or the NSCI alumni Network or some reputed libraries.
