Dear forum members, I agree with Dr. Gopakumar and Dr.Tadasad's thinking of responding to demanding questionnaires. Data collection doctoral research is voluntary and depends on cooperation from the respondent. It cannot be forced on respondents for providing information under RTI. What will be value of research, under pressure, if the respondent provides wrong information or incomplete data? I feel the RTI should not come in the way of Academic research. The basic philosophy of survey research is revolving around ethical values and maintaining the privacy of individual respondent. In such situation how one can claim the data provision under RTI? and if he/she collects collect such data under RTI, what prevents the researcher to disclose the identity of individual respondent? This logic itself defeats the basic philosophy behind survey research. As Dr. Tadasad said, I too feel that the respondent can refuse/reject/no response to such demanding questionnaires. Unlike other countries, the responding to survey in our country is on professional ground and it won't yield any visible rewards to respondent in return. I don't think we need to refer RTI for managing our library. It is our duty/responsibility to maintain library records and resources in order. I completely agree with Dr. Gopakumar. I have also noticed this tendency. In last few months, I have received several such questionnaires through RTI. I think this tendency is growing because many times our tables get flooded with such questionnaire - particularly from LIS research students and we cannot respond to all the questionnaires. That is why these budding researchers are resorting to RTI. It must be known to all that participation in any research is completely voluntary. Whether in field research method or through questionnaire method, participants' willingness is of prime importance. Research methodologies within the paradigm of Social Science gives maximum respect to participants' decision. A researcher must be ready to accept that from a sample of any size, the response rate can be anywhere between 30 - 40%. Somewhere I read that 40% is considered a very good response rate. In order to raise the response rate, these reseachers are resorting to coercion/compliance method using RTI. This issue must be handled within the arena of research ethics. In my opinion, the DLIS of various universities must come forward to stop this behavior. They must specify that research based on data collected through RTI will be TOTALLY REJECTED. They probably can go one step further by making it mandatory that all questionnairs must have some declaration that the questionnaire was not administered through RTI. In soft copy it should be in IBM-compatible MS Word format. Sub-heads should be used at reasonable intervals to break the monotony of the text. Words and symbols to be italicized must be clearly indicated, by either italic type or underlining. Abbreviations and acronyms should be spelt out with its first occurrence, unless found as entries in their abbreviated form in a standard dictionary. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Length: Manuscript should typically be of 10 to 15 pages including the reference list. Notes and reference: Notes are for explanations or amplifications of textual material. They are distracting to the readers and expensive to set and should be avoided whenever possible. They should be typed as normal text at the end of the text section of the manuscript rather than as the part of the footnote or endnote feature of computer programme and should be numbered consecutively throughout the contribution. A reference list should contain references that are cited in the text. These should be accurate and complete. Personal communications (letters, memos, telephone conversations) are cited in the text after the name with as exact a date as possible. Examples of references to a book, a chapter in book, and journal article follow, formatted in APA style: Tables, Figures, and Illustrations: Create tables, figure, and illustrations in their electronic files, separate from the main text. (You may use one file for all the tables, but place each figure or illustration in a separate file. Each table should begin in a new page). Figures and tables should be keyed to the text. The data in the text need not be described in such detail that tables become redundant. Figure captions should appear on a separate sheet, not on the original figures. One high quality, camera ready version of each figure must be submitted with the manuscript; photocopies may accompany the additional manuscript copies. Compositors will typeset the tables.
