Dear LIS Professionals who have been awarded PhD during 2010 and onwards, I am updating the databank of bibliographic details of LIS Doctoral Dissertations awarded by Indian Universities. I have already compiled the data from INFLIBNET, Vidyanidhi and University news. I am keeping track of each issue of University News for new entries on LIS research. Still I feel, Many universities may not submit research data to AIU for publication in Univ. News. As a result, I feel the datasheet compiled by me is incomplete. Those of you who have been awarded PhD during 2010 and onwards, please spare some time to provide the data through the below linked simple questionnaire designed for the purpose. I need your full cooperation to compile the comprehensive databank. The consolidated data is for the benefit of our professional colleagues and will be shared with them. Dear Dr. Manjunath, This is really a good subject to discuss, If you can help / guide professionals through this forum about importing the data from libsys to Excel or other CCF.It would really helpful to all. ABOUT NIFTEM National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) was conceptualized by Government of India on persistent demand of the food industry to have an Apex Organization as a One Stop Solution Provider for the various problems of the sector. Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India, has set up this institute with an initial investment of about Rs 500 crore (US $100 million). DLINE Research Award 2013 in Library & Information Science Research (http://www.dline.info/index.php/research-award-for-lis) About the Award DLINE Incorporation, UK and India, the publisher of the collection of international journals in Science and Technology, and the Society for Information Organization in UK seek potential research projects with sound themes for the 2013 DLINE Outstanding Research Awards. Award-winning entries will receive a cash prize of $500 (or currency equivalent), a certificate, a winners' logo to attach to correspondence and the opportunity of publication in the DLINE journal - either as a full paper or a short paper. The DLINE Award recognizes library and information science researchers who have made extensive and innovative contribution in the library and information science domain. Two prizes will be awarded in 2013. Eligibility Library and Information Professionals from Third world countries who are currently employed in any recognised library are eligible to apply. There is no age limit to the award. Submissions must be related to the library and information science domain research. Both individuals and project teams may submit an application. Any awards to project team submissions will be divided equally among the members. Each project team may submit only one paper/project per award. Prevalent Practice of Plagiarism: Is there a Solution ?

Dear Sir/Madam, Plagiarism has become widespread in Indian academic environment like never before. Because of the technological advancement we are in a position to track the act of plagiarism easily but the administrative wing of the academic institutions in universities have failed to take action when there is ample evidence of act of plagiarism. In the recent past, many of the professors in institutes of higher learning who have found guilty of plagiarism have promoted to the highest position of the office of higher learning. There is no punishment for plagiarism in India. One can easily escape without any punishment for the act of copying others work. This is the precise reason why there is lot of incidents of plagiarism in Indian academic environment. LIS profession is no different to this trend. Let me mention one such incident of plagiarism in LIS domain. The only reason for taking this example is, because this particular paper is available in public domain. Plagiarized version Title of the article : Use and awareness of Internet at education colleges of Gadag City, Karnataka: A case study Journal : SRELS Journal of Information Management Volume and Issue: 49 (3) Year: 2012 Pages: 325-330 Abstract of the 2012 version of the article: This study is aimed at the Internet use and its impact among the education colleges of Gadag city. Structured questionnaire was designed to collect data. Out of 100 questionnaires, 90 filled in questionnaires were received back. The survey found out that, 98.89% of the total respondents use Internet only for e-mail facility, 94.44% respondents are using Google as the favorite search engine for accessing information, and 52.22% were not satisfied with the printing facilities available in their respective colleges. The study also highlights the suggestions made by the faculty and the students Title of the article from which the above authors have copied the article Title of the article : Use of Internet in engineering colleges of three districts of Karnataka State: A study Journal : ILA Bulletin Volume and Issue: 43 (1) Year: 2007 Pages: 13-19 Abstract of the 2007 version of the article: This study is aimed at the Internet use and its impact among the engineering colleges of Mysore, Hassan and Mandya districts. Structured questionnaire were designed to collect the data. Out of 100 questionnaires 90 filled in questionnaires were received back The survey found out that, 92.22% of the total respondents use Internet only for e-mail, 86.66% respondents are using Google as the favorite search engine for accessing information and 53.33% were not satisfied with the printing and down loading facilities available in their respective colleges. The study also highlights the suggestions made by the faculty and the students of the respective engineering colleges. It was surprised that the authors have copied even the references as it is without any changes. Content is completely identical. Only changes they made to the article was the user response rate wherever it is needed. There is no reward for hard work in today's society especially in India. Maintaining basic standards in publishing Government of India and state government documents

Dear Colleagues, It is heartening to see that the government librarians from central and state governments advocating for open access to literature. Open access is not only about making the electronic copy of the literature available in public domain without charge and restrictions, it is also about making the literature discoverable by using basic metadata in publications. While doing literature review, I have encountered with numerous literature published by various agencies within Government of India and state governments without even basic metadata. There are some literature without even an identifiable title. Almost 50 percent documents do not have a publication date and no document has a mention of publication place, publisher, suggestion citation, not to mention standard book numbers (e.g. ISBN). Worse still, publishers do not seem to follow any guidelines in creating file formats. Hosting URLs change very often making citations untraceable within few months. NIC and DEITY are leading developing so many standards in the field of e-Government, eHealth, and other fields. Government information managers should be able implement at least basic bibliographic standards, adhere to procedure for publications, and making IRs hosting government publications. It seems that National Library and archive have already given up on this. It is recommended to set up a technical committee to come up with appropriate recommendations, implementation guidelines, and technical support to the line ministries/ government agencies to improve the situation.
