Title - Plagiarism: The Plague in Academia
Abstract:
Plagiarism is a serious violation of academic integrity that involves
presenting another person’s work, ideas, or language as one’s own without
proper acknowledgment. Over time, plagiarism has evolved from direct
copying in traditional academia to more complex forms in the digital age,
including patchwork and self-plagiarism. The emergence of AI-generated
content has further challenged conventional notions of originality and
authorship. Since authorship requires accountability, intention, and
ethical responsibility, AI cannot be considered an author. Academic
institutions and publishers have responded through stricter editorial
policies, plagiarism detection systems, and guidelines for responsible AI
use. This presentation also outlines ethical practices to avoid plagiarism
and highlights UGC regulations in India, including similarity thresholds
and penalties, emphasizing the need for transparency and responsible
scholarship.
