Digital Scholarship Has Released the Artificial Intelligence and Libraries Bibliography

The Artificial Intelligence and Libraries Bibliography includes over 125 selected English-language articles and books that are useful in understanding how libraries are exploring and adopting modern artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. It covers works from January 2018 through August 2023. It includes a Google Translate link. The bibliography is available as a website and a website PDF with live links. Libraries have been exploring AI technology for a long time. In particular, there was an active period of experimentation from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s that primarily focused on the use of expert systems. Many projects used expert system shells, which simplified development; however, some projects also used AI languages, such as Prolog. This period produced a significant number of library-related AI papers. Subsequently, library interest in AI diminished until around 2018, when research activity increased. The public release of generative AI systems in late 2022, such as ChatGPT, sparked a strong upsurge of interest in them and a rush to utilize their capabilities. Dear All, Greetings from Azim Premji University. We are pleased to invite you to join us for the launch event of the Pushpa Mittra Bhargava Archive at the Gulbanoo Premji Library, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, on September 19, 2023. Dr. Pushpa Mittra Bhargava (1928–2017) was an Indian scientist, writer, and administrator. He founded the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Padma Bhushan, for his distinguished service. The launch will include the exhibition of postal stamps, matchboxes, paintings, artifacts, and a selection of Bhargava's papers, which largely cover an exhibition he organized in the 1970s called 'Method of Science'. The launch event will include a panel discussion on the MOS exhibition. The panellists will include Chandana Chakrabarti, scientist, writer, and Joint Secretary of the Pushpa Mittra Bhargava Foundation; Gauhar Raza, former Professor at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research and Chief Scientist at the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources; Gita Chadha, a sociologist working on critical science studies; and Obaid Siddiqui Chair 2023-2024 at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. The discussion will be moderated by Yogesh Shouche, Gut Microbiome Division, SKAN Research Trust. The digital archive for PMB archives is built on AtoM, an open-source software designed for archives, and the same will be unveiled on September 19. Friends, I just saw this brief article by Robert-Jan Smits. https://sciencebusiness.net/viewpoint/open-science/viewpoint-its-time-incre… The author is trying to defend and promote Plan S. In my view Plan S is a plan meant to perpetuate the hegemony (and obscene profit margins) of the publishing oligarchs at the cost of science and scientists. Scientists and taxpayers around the world, esp. the Global South, should steer clear of this evil plan and prefer achieving open access through the publicly peer-reviewed preprints route.
