Invitation to participate in the 2021 Library Automation Perceptions survey

The 2021 International Library Automation Perceptions survey conducted through Library Technology Guides is now underway. This survey, conducted annually since 2007, provides an important opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, the narrative comments provide even more interesting insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, though redacted to conceal any text that might identify the individual or organization responding. Please help your fellow libraries who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. This survey also provides constructive criticism to the vendors involved to help them address any prevailing issues or concerns. If you have responded in previous years, please respond again this year to help identify any trends regarding improvement or worsening of the products or support services. I am writing this mail on behalf of the President INSA and in the context of a lecture by Prof Marcia McNutt, President of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, USA on the March 3rd between 1800-2000 Indian Time. Dr. McNutt has been awarded the prestigious _Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Medal_ - 2022 by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). Prof. McNutt has suggested that she will speak on “Misinformation: Addressing the Challenge” and, will trace some of the history of misinformation, and discuss why it is such a problem today, with some key examples from the US and possibly elsewhere. This is indeed a topic of importance and concern for both the public and academia. Enthused by the title of this talk and with our own concerns on the current contexts, we felt that a panel discussion on broader issues arising from _changing narratives _of _STI, Economics, Ethics and Society: Issues and Challenges in recalibrating the role of Academies and Academia_ following the talk will be useful to initiate a discussion in the community. I am pleased to report that we have an eminent set of panelists , a) Prof. Holden Thorp, Editor in Chief of Science Journals, b) Prof. Naomi Oreskes of the Department of Earth Sciences at the Harvard Universities and an highly acclaimed authors of several bestselling books including the Why trust Science ; c) Prof. Geoffrey Boulton FRS OBE from UK, who will be representing the International Science Council and has been the architect of their document Science as a Global Public Good and d) Prof. Chandrima Shaha, President INSA. But there is a need to discuss it from time to time. Writing is a necessity for researchers to publish their work in reputed journals and well-attended conferences as well as to prepare winning grant proposals. However, it is increasingly becoming an even more important task than doing the research itself. Intense competition in securing grants and publishing papers underscores the need to write well to put forth one’s ideas effectively. By taking a few good tips from a selected set of essays on “how to write about research”, we will discuss a pragmatic approach that makes writing pleasurable and rewarding. Brief biographical sketch of G. K. Ananthasuresh G. K. Ananthasuresh earned his bachelor’s degree from IIT-Madras, master’s from the University of Toledo, and PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor—all in mechanical engineering. His principal research interests are compliant mechanisms and topology optimization with applications in microelectromechanical systems, biomechanics of cells, biomedical devices, and microrobots. In addition to research output of more than 300 journal and conference publications and 16 patents, his research group has spun off four startups.
