LIS Academy recommendations submitted to the chairman, National Education Policy Drafting Committee

Dear Professional Friends, LIS Academy thanks all the LIS Professionals who attended the consultative meeting organized by LIS Academy held at Raman Research Institute, Bangalore on 20th July 2019. We thank all those peers and senior professionals also who contributed for completion of the memorandum which has been submitted today to Dr.Kasturi Rangan, the chairman of the drafting committee of NEP. Earlier to this the team of LIS Academy members along with Dr.Meera, Librarian RRI, Bangalore and Hamsa Kalyani, Librarian, NISA, IISc Bangalore met Dr.Kasturi Rangan on 26th July 2019 and held a detailed discussion. The chairman suggested the team to incorporate in its recommendations for introducing the LIS Departments as centers of excellence in five premier universities in each of the divisions of our country. Accordingly, the draft was amended and submitted today. We have also been assured of organizing a meeting with drafting committee members during this week. We have also been assured of including our recommendations in the final draft of the NEP. The submitted petition has been uploaded on the LIS Academy website. Book lost and replacement.Regadirng,Iwould like to give a different opinion ,cause of book lost is related to readers liking/ theft/ mishandling.If a reader like any book and kowingly doesn't submit book than we must feel happy that we have cultivated reading book habbit,if a stole a book than we r more successful because he is stealing kwoledge which will one day prove his worth,if users mishandle book we must let know how to handle.I think no need of replacement,discard from stock& do new purchase in next budget.Ofcourse in inthis case librarian should not be penalized or tortured monetary harrassment.After all we are playing vital role in dealing lofty , average,lazy users of library., with regards Abha Sinha,jnv , Rajgir. To: LIS-Forum Administrator: Kindly publish my response to the post of Smt.Jayanthi R.Kumbhar on "Book lost & replacement" dt.24th July, 2019 in LIS-Forum and oblige.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This has reference to the post of Smt.Jayanthi R.Kumbhar on "Book lost & replacement" dt.24th July, 2019 and comment by Smt. Bhagyashree Sane's dt.25th July, 2019 on above subject. Occasional loss of books (intentional or otherwise) by the borrowers is a unvoidable phenomena. But, the real losers are other members of Library who loose permanent access to book or knowledge. The Policy of replacing some other book for the book lost by the borrower is neither logical nor acceptable to the Management. Hence, a Policy on "Replacement of Books lost by the Readers" was formulated in Global Academy of Technology, Bengaluru, in 2001 while I was woking as Librarian in the said Institute during 2001-16. The Policy on "Replacement of Books lost by the Readers" which was submitted to the Principal and endorsed by the Management. It says: "If a book is lost by a borrower (student or faculty) then he/she should replace the same by purchasing a new copy of same edition of the book from the Book shop and give it as replacement to the Library. If the same edition of the book is not available, then a latest available edition should be purchased. If the book lost by the borrower is out-of-print, them he or she should get a xerox copy as replacement copy." To motivate the losers to bet replacement book, the Librarian also helped them to get maximum discount from the the regular Book Vendors. For out-of-print books we also sought the help from neighbouring Libraries to get a xerox of the book lost through an official letter. We were aware that getting full xerox of a book is violation of Copyright Act. Hence, such copies were marked as "Single copy for academic use only" and kept for reference in Library only.
