Are we Information Literate to become Information Manager?

Believe it or not! Today we are talking and talking only about information, information explosion and its management and present situation has forced us to become information manager which is not at all an easy task. To become successful information manager, we are supposed to be information literate first which requires the understanding of the following in my opinion: *a. **Information – why needed?* In order to become successful Information Manager, first we need to identify that information is really needed and we have to understand why information is needed, what, how much, what kind of information is really required and at the same time, we need to identify that information is spread in wide range of formats in different locations (geographically and virtually). And, the skill which we need to develop to articulate a particular question for fetching the information for specific research is very important. We all know that information is not limited to the boundary and inside the boundary of wall but it is available on paper, digital files, and other media such as audio visuals or from different sources. It may or may not be easy to get information to fulfill the need for making a right decision for getting a right answer against right question but we need to develop this skill. *b. **Available Resources – Understand:* An information manager is supposed to develop a skill to evaluate and identify what resources are available on particular topic or particular information and where we can locate them in order to access them. If found also, what type of resources and whether we can use for our purpose. We need to understand the different types of resources such as paper-based, electronic resources, digital resources etc. and when & how to use them considering the merits of types of resources and differences as well. *c. **Find Information – How?* We may be having very good resources but we need to develop technique and at the same time of plan for using the available resources so that we can get best information for the best question. Information literate has to understand that searching should not only be the option to get information but also learn other techniques such as browsing, monitoring information resources etc. Generally, we may find information from the following methods such as: i. Go through several resources ii. Book Indexes given at the back iii. Abstracting and Indexing Journals iv. Use of RSS feed in order to get information from different sources v. Active participation in forum, discussion list, e-mail alerts and bulletin boards etc. vi. Bookmarking the address on Browser such as Mozilla, Chrome etc. vii. Searching the information in search engines using Boolean Logic viii. Develop the understanding to use relevant ranked searching *d. **Evaluation of Results and Implementation* We need to develop skill to evaluate the obtained information for checking the accuracy and its value without biasness keeping the same in mind that the evaluation will not misguide or mislead with incomplete result. Many times it happens that we get information through search engines against our filled question, but we need to evaluate and understand whether the information is trustworthy then only information can help the researcher in right direction. A prior knowledge of author, name of publisher, editor and series may help the researcher to reach the right destination with less effort. *e. **Disseminate your search results (findings)* To become information literate, we need to develop the understanding to analyze the retrieved information to disseminate with accuracy. But before we leave the information for others to use, we need to understand the use of information in a responsible, sensitive and ethical manner. A proper respect to confidentially should be given and at the same time credit to the person who really owes the copyright. We also need to develop the ability to communicate in a manner which is appropriate to information, the user and present situation. *f. **Manage your findings – How?* Finding is never easy against any question and it involves efforts and human interpretation at different stages to get right information for the right purpose. We need to develop the skill to manage the acquired information in most effective way with suitable methods and for that we will have to, sometimes, evaluate critically on our process and findings as well as sources from where we retrieved the information for using the findings and information at later stage. And for that we will have to think as follows: i. Use of used resources in finding the information again ii. Use file cabinets or proper shelves to managing physical resources iii. Arrangement of emails with attachments iv. Planning security and backup of information retrieved for re-locating and use v. Getting updates in changes in documents where you retrieved information vi. Currently we use KOHA 3.18 and would like to enable users to access subscribed content from OPAC. Using their OPAC login, we would like to authenticate the users. The Department of Studies in Library and Information Science – fondly called MyDLIS - is a UGC-SAP (DRS II) supported Department, only the second in the southern part of India in LIS to achieve this distinction. After successfully completing the first phase under UGC-SAP, the UGC sanctioned the status of DRS II with the three themes Digital Library, Library Automation and Open Courseware with a munificent grant. The MyDLIS is organizing a National Conference on Bridging the Digital Divide: Open Source and Open Access Movement during March 11-12, 2016 under the UGC-SAP-DRS II. The main themes are Digital Libraries, Library Automation, and Open Courseware. A study project called "Beyond Download" http://libraryconnect.elsevier.com/beyond-downloads shows, though we include Altmetric tools along with our traditional impact measures based on citations to analyse research publication impacts, researchers still share the works in traditional ways, not many are using social media tools to share them. "Kudos" has a free service for Researchers to help their works more visible on social media networks. * Explain in plain language what your publication is about and why it is important. Add links to other materials that provide context. * Share it to your social networks, web pages or email contacts. * Measure the effect on clicks, views, downloads, citations and altmetrics to learn which communication channels are most effective. It is free for individual researchers to create profiles (can integrate with ORCID), then write briefs about their publications, share the links via social media (article fulltext availability depends on the institutions subscriptions or repository pre-prints coverage) and measure the impact and watch the activities. *UNESCO-UNAOC* *MILID Yearbook 2016* *Media and Information Literacy:* *Reinforcing Human Rights, Countering Radicalization and Extremism* *Call for Papers* *Deadline for proposals: 31 January 2016* Proposals are now being invited for articles to be published in the Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Yearbook 2016. The MILID Yearbook is a peer reviewed academic publication and a joint initiative of the UNESCO-UNAOC University Cooperation Programme on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue. The cooperation programme was launched in 2011 within the framework of the UNESCO University Twinning Programme (UNITWIN). The MILID University Network now consists of 17 universities from all regions of the world. The MILID Yearbook 2013, 2014 and 2015 have been published in cooperation with the Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research (NORDICOM). The objectives of the Yearbook are to: - Strengthen and deepen the knowledge concerning MILID on global, regional and national levels including in the frame human rights, dialogue, democracy and peace - Widen and deepen the collaboration and exchange between academics and partners on media and information literacy - Visualize and stimulate research and practices within as well as outside the UNITWIN Network in the field of MILID while promoting a more holistic perspective of MIL. *Theme of the Yearbook:* 2016 will be the first year of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. A renewed emphasis on a Human Rights-Based Approach to all forms of development is apt and timely. While migration and peace buidling as development challenges are not new to humankind. The world is faced with levels of migration, that rival only the one that occured during the Second World War, as well as new forms of violent terroism. As negative and undesirable consequence, all over the world, there has been a sudden rise in incidents of individuals using hate speech against migrants, forced migration and minority communities or social groups, blaming them for their nations’ struggles. The words used in politics, in the news, in social media, in research studies, national reports and general literature or debate about these human phenomena have consequences. History has shown that rhetorical excesses, and imbalanced or biased historical accounts of certain events in relation to any ethnic group, place, culture or religion can give rise to a climate of prejudice, discrimination and violence. It is this prejudices, discrimination and violence that often compromises individual rights or equal rights to all – the right to cultural and religious expressions, the right to security and peace, the right to freedom of expression, the right to education, the right to information, the right to associate or connect et al. Here, Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “*All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood*” is breached. It is this *reasoning* and *conscience* that the acquisition of MIL competencies can stir in all peoples. Furthermore, the ideological beliefs and dogmas that we firmly hold emanate from our socialization. Socialization is embedded in information and communication and increasingly taking place through technological platforms, media and all forms of learning environment. When taken together and coupled with the incidents of the use of social media by extremist and violent organizations to radicalize and recruit especially young minds, the relevance of MIL to enable citizens to challenge their own beliefs and effectively and critically engage in these topics, and thus the integration of MIL in formal, non-formal and informal settings becomes more urgent. A rights-based approach to media and information literacy and to development can play a crucial role in perceptions of the “other” by encouraging reporting, research and analysis as well as the design and implementation of development interventions that are objective, evidence-based, inclusive, reliable, ethical and accurate, and by encouraging individuals to take sound actions based on their rights and the rights of others. Therefore, “*Media and Information Literacy: Reinforcing Human Rights, Countering Radicalization and Extremism”* has been chosen as the theme of the 2016 MILID Yearbook. *Key Sub-themes:* a. Community empowerment; b. Hate speech; c. Radicalization and extremism; d. Gender Equality; e. Interreligious discourses in the media All articles submitted must be linked to one of the sub-themes above in *the context of media and information literacy.* Special attention should be given to the intercultural dimensions of these areas. Papers should engage the reader to understand media and information literacy beyond their home country or professional area of competence. The focus of the papers must be on media and information literacy and dialogue and connect to the theme *“Media and Information Literacy: Reinforcing Human Rights, Countering Radicalization and Extremism”* All papers must demonstrate a connection with at least three of the the following components: 1.
