*By Lisa Peet*
[image: Recreate Logo]A group of technology companies, trade associations,
and civil society organizations have joined forces to form Re:Create, a
national coalition to advocate for balanced copyright policy. In the wake
of recent proposals to amend the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, as well
as constant advances in the field of knowledge creation, coalition members
are calling for responsive copyright law that balances the interests of
those who create information and products with those of users and
innovators, providing robust exceptions as well as limitations to copyright
law in order that it not limit new uses and technologies.

[image: Kevin L. Smith]So many ideas can be sparked by coincidental
juxtaposition. In the past few weeks, I have been thinking about the
intersections between scholarly communications and information literacy.
This was largely because I was part of a panel at the Association of
College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Conference about the task force
charged with implementing the 2013 White Paper on the topic. My specific
task was to discuss how the new Framework for Information Literacy for
Higher Education illuminated the approach we called for in the white paper.
On top of these concerns came the Blurred Lines copyright case, which was
all over the media in the past few weeks, and about which I have been asked
my opinion repeatedly. Can these different strands be woven into a coherent
idea?

[image: DMCA Logo]Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Representative Jared Polis
(D-CO) on April 16 introduced the “Breaking Down Barriers to Innovation
Act,” a bill that would make significant changes to Section 1201 of the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which gives the Library of
Congress the power to grant exemptions to DMCA’s ban on circumventing
digital rights management (DRM) software, encryption, or other digital
restrictions.

More importantly, as the first product developed with Innovative’s

This is big: President Obama wants local government, public libraries, and
schools to make sure all kids have library cards. During an appearance at
the Anacostia Neighborhood Library in Washington, DC, this morning, sixth
grader Osman Yaya interviewed the President, who announced an initiative to
get $250 million in free ebooks into the hands of students
<http://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-0370-1504/Bct/l-00c8/l…>—while
reiterating his commitment to improve Internet access at libraries and
schools in all communities as part of the ConnectEd program
