Title: Digital Curation – The technology that helps preserve art, architecture and culture SPEAKER: Prof. A.Y.Asundi, Former Professor and Chairman, Department of Library and Information, Bangalore University PLACE: Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS), 702, 'Upstairs', 42nd Cross, III Block, Rajajinagar, Bangalore - 560 010 DATE & TIME: Friday April 10, 2015 at 6.15 p.m. Abstract: Curatorship and Librarianship are the two age old professions and have shouldered the responsibility of preserving the ancient knowledge embedded in art, language, literature, architecture and culture of human heritage for the centuries. The knowledge of curatorship is highly skilled and has many specialisations like, Epigraphy, Archival Management, Preservation and conservation, manuscriptoloty and museology etc. It has evolved its own methods and techniques of preserving archives, handwritten books and palm leaf manuscripts and so on. Digital technology has opened a new avenue in preservation of archives, and art and architectural monuments and structures. Digital Curation is the new version of preservation objective with the use of digital preservation technology. The developments in computer and communication technology and of reasonable costs, ensured longevity of the documents in particular, and providing global access to representative reproduction of these documents and monuments the digital curation technology has come into use worldwide. The speaker demonstrates them with some examples from India/Karnataka and employs a new domain termed as Historical informatics. About Speaker: Prof. A.Y.Asundi, Former Professor and Chairman, Department of Library and Information Science, and also served as the Officer in charge of IT Centre of Bangalore University, Bangalore. With experience as practicing librarian, and a teacher he has been serving the profession nearly for 5 decades. His vast experience has a blend of both traditional and modern areas of LIS and has almost touched upon teaching any area of LIS. He has also been Guest Faculty for teaching, MCA, MBA courses in various institutions in Karnataka and also for more than two decades at DRTC/ISI. He has been a member of several LIS committees in India and Abroad, He is a member of the Advisory Panel of IFLA SIG on LIS Education in Developing Countries. He is one of the editors of the IFLA Publication “ LIS Education in Developing Countries – The Road Ahead (IFLA Publication 165) published in 2014. IFLA School Library Guidelines, 2nd edition (draft) submitted for approval

Dear All, The new draft second edition of the IFLA School Libraries Guidelines 2015 has been submitted to the IFLA Professional Committee for approval. The guidelines was developed by IFLA School Libraries Standing Committee and edited by Dianne Oberg and Barbara Schultz-Jones . These guidelines constitute the second edition of the IFLA ‘School Library Guidelines’. The first edition of the school library guidelines was developed in 2002 by the School Libraries Section, then called the School Libraries and Resource Centers Section. These guidelines have been developed to assist school library professionals and educational decision-makers in their efforts to ensure that all students and teachers have access to effective school library programs and services, delivered by qualified school library personnel. The drafting of these revised guidelines involved discussion, debate and consultation with many people from many countries at workshops during IFLA conferences and mid-year meetings and through ongoing writing and review in person and online. The editors are indebted to the contributions of members of the Standing Committee of the IFLA Section of School Libraries and the executive board of the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL), as well as the other members of the international school library community who shared their expertise and their passion for the project. IISC OPENS UP ITS NANO SCIENCE LAB FOR EXTERNAL RESEARCHERS The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, (IISc) has been facilitating research at some of its facilities by people in dire need of the right facilities. A prominent one among them is the lab of the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering or better known as CeNSE. When many a researcher in the country wants to test a hypothesis or wants to verify data relating to nano particles, they have two places to turn to in the country. One, IIT-Bombay and the other CeNSE at IISc. The two are among the only eight facilities with advanced nanotech research laboratories in the world. The other such labs are those in Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, Cornell University, and Purdue University among others. Speaking of those who have been using or have used the facilities, said Rudra Pratap, chairperson, CeNSE: "There are about 300 universities across the country. We are only one of the two in the country and over 300 people from outside the IISc have used the facility." About 500-odd studies have been done at the facility. The four year old facility, set up at a cost of Rs 150 crore, has helped many a company in its endeavours by allowing access to its labs for a fee. According to IISc sources, an individual user may need to pay Rs 2,500 for using the lab for one hour. It could go up to Rs 5,000 depending on the equipment, and if it's an individual or an organisation using the lab and its other facilities, said a researcher who has used the lab. The researchers who have been using the facilities include those from the healthcare sector across disciplines, including homoeopathy. "We have received a request from a researcher in Ayurveda now who wants to do some studies at the nano level," added Pratap. The largest number of studies at the facility have been by researchers from the field of electronics. Debunking allegations The lab has also now helped debunk the allegations against homoeopathy that it is not effective or that in higher dilutions, it only has a placebo effect. But, a two-year-long research by Dr E S Rajendran, director of Vinayaka Missions Homoeopathy Medical College, Salem has proved that they do contain nano-particles even at higher dilutions. "This could open up vistas of research in future," said Dr Rajendran. A paper on his research will be presented at the World Homoeopathy Summit to be held in Mumbai.
