Bangalore University PLACE: Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS) 702, 'Upstairs', 42nd Cross, III Block, Rajajinagar, Bangalore - 560 010 DATE & TIME: Friday March 13, 2015 at 6.15 p.m. Abstract: A lot of literature has been published world over about planning and designing of library buildings focusing on space, service and user requirements/dimensions. There is an increase in the diversity of new libraries constructed around the world, making an attempt to integrate architectural expression, inspiring internal environment, good functionality and continued research in converting the existing spaces in to a more conducive and continuously accommodative space. Library building and space management is not much researched area in Indian Librarianship. Research output in LISA from 1968-2011 and web of sciences has shown only 30 publications constituting to 0.80% of the total output on the issue. Irrespective of this academic indifference, it is the umbrella sheltering both human and material resources useful for educational and research goals of any college or University. Library Voices: a new initiative by Taylor & Francis

Hello everyone, I am happy to share with you a new initiative from the Taylor & Francis Team called the "Library Voices''. Library Voices aims to capture stories from academic librarians around the world, focusing on what their library roles entail, how they are changing, and to demonstrate the positive and considerable contribution libraries are making to the research community, particularly those in developing regions. This output will primarily be a collection of short videos, but will also include audio recordings, images, and text-based accounts. For any clarifications, please write to me: Shafina.segon(a)tandfindia.com<mailto:Shafina.segon@tandfindia.com> Below are further details on how to go about sending us your story. We hope this will provide some inspiration for your story. What should my story include? Please consider the following questions when thinking about the story you would like to tell. What do you think someone in another region could learn about how you work in your library? What would they find interesting, or surprising? 1. What does a typical day look like for you in your library? Which task keeps you busiest? 2. How do you tend to interact with your library users? Do you undertake any work to engage with users outside of the physical library space? 3. Do you have an online presence at all for your library and your library collection? 4. How do you monitor usage of your collection? 5. Would you say your role as a librarian is changing? If so, how? You might like to focus on answering just one of these questions, or share a more general account of the everyday work undertaken in your library - it's entirely up to you! Options for submitting your story Video recordings Videos should be no more than 5 minutes in length. Please clearly introduce yourself, your role, and the library you work in at the beginning of your recording. - A recording on a mobile device or phone, such as an iPad, iPhone, or Galaxy is of a sufficient quality. - Videos should be provided in one of the following formats: .mp4, .mov, .mpg - Remember to make your recording holding your device in the landscape position (sideways) rather than portrait (upright) - Think about the setting: do you want to be in a static position, or would you like the guide the viewer around your library? - Think about location: aim to record the video in a location that is relevant to the subject matter, ideally in the library environment. - Think about framing: distance from the camera and positioning in the frame - Think about background and costume: Try not to have a mess in the background or wear unprofessional/stripy clothing - Think about lighting: Lighting directly onto the speaker, not behind or from the side - Think about the audio: Quiet room to minimise background noise; close enough to the camera to pick up the audio clearly if the microphone is built into the camera Audio recordings Audio recordings should be no longer than 5 minutes in length. Please clearly introduce yourself, your role, and the library you work in at the beginning of your recording. - A recording via a mobile device is of sufficient quality - Recordings should be provided in the following file formats: .mp3, .wav - Think about capturing clear audio: Quiet room to minimise background noise; close enough to the device to pick up the audio clearly if the microphone is built in Submitting a video or audio recording Videos and audio recordings should be submitted using ZendTo, a file transfer website hosted by Taylor & Francis Group, which allows you to transfer files of up to 2GB internationally. The Taylor & Francis Communications team can guide you through this process. We require you to sign a Recording Rights Agreement before we can publish your video. The Taylor & Francis Communications team will arrange for this to be forwarded on to you. Please sign the agreement and post/email it back as soon as possible, as without it we are unable to host your video. Written account Written accounts should be no more than 300 words in extent. They should be accompanied by an image of yourself and the library you work in. Submissions which do not meet these criteria will not be published online. BITS & BYTES Lecture Series: Minutes of First lecture held on 13th February 2015 at SRELS, Rajajinagagr, Bangalore Topic: “Big Data and Analytics: Applications in LIS” Speaker: Suvarasha Minj, Kaybus, Bangalore Organizers:NCSI-Net Foundation, Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) and Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS) Date & Venue:Friday 13th February 2015 at SRELS, Rajajinagar, Bangalore. The Lecture started with welcome address and brief introduction of lecture series by Dr. Francis Jayakanth. Dr. IRN Goudar, who presided the function, introduced speaker and presented his views about the buzz word “Big Data” which is widely talked in present social networking context. He also appreciated organizers – and the three organizations - for reinitiating monthly lecture series in Bangalore. Mrs. Suvarsha, the speaker, introduced concept &history of Big Data and its nature. She explained Big data with its 4Vs terminology i.e Volume (terabytes to exabytes of data), Velocity (Data in motion, streaming data), Variety (Data in many formats like structured, semi structured, unstructured etc), Veracity (Data in doubt). She spoke about big data analytics which has got wide market applications, for example market trends, customer preferences etc. The history of big data analytics was demonstrated with a YouTube video. Survasha highlighted key enablers and technologies of big data. She explained MapReduce,Apache Hadoop – 2005, NoSQL and other big data related technologies. She also mentioned applications of big data in various fields by giving various examples like, Wal-Mart can predict what products will sell, Car insurance companies understand how well their customers actually drive, Obama’s 2012 election win by analyzing big data analytics etc. She concluded her talk byexplaining applications of Big Data concepts in LIS field; she mentioned various ongoing projects in LIS arena. She opined that possible applications of Big Data in LIS field can be: 1.Knowledge production – keeping the tabs – using web data, 2.Information – Books, articles, data sets, metadata along with other data 3.Users – Usage of information 4.Webometrics - large scale data analysis identifying appropriate research fields for new information sources based upon an initial analysis of its potential 5.Bibliometrics and Altmetrics - identify patterns, discover new knowledge, and inform public and scholarly decision making Finally she concluded her talk by explaining path of Knowledge automation and Kaybus knowledge automation tool demonstration. There was interactive question answer session. The lecture was attended by more than 40 professionals from academic, R & D, corporate, student community. The lecture was well received and appreciated by the participants. Mr. Ananda Byrappa thanked Mrs. Suvarsha for informative talk and Dr. IRN Goudar for presiding over the lecture. Anand thanked audience for making the first Bits and Bytes lecture successful by turning in large numbers. Anand explained how the BITS and BYTES lecture series would help LIS professionals in Bangalore going forward. About BITS & BYTES Lecture Series: A Joint lecture series initiated in Bangalore by three LIS organizations namely - NCSI-Net Foundation, Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) and Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS).
