Dear Friends, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala Library Association, Kottayam Region and Kerala College Librarians' Association are going to organise a workshop on Academic Blogging on 20-21 February 2015. About the workshop Hands on training will be based WordPress blogging platform. WordPress is considered as an easy to use publishing platform for academic community. With WordPress, we can create any type of website: a personal blog or website, a photo blog, a professional portfolio, academic website, library portal, a magazine or news website, an online community, even a network of websites. Teachers, students, research scholars and library professionals can publish their content with ease and effectively to keep in touch with their peers. WordPress offers most of the features suitable for scholarly communication for academic community. In this workshop, participants will develop a custom website and blog with static and dynamic pages from scratch. Experienced resource persons will introduce various features and plugins available with WordPress to make your website fully functional. Scope Understand the capabilities of WordPress as a blogging platform and CMS. Learn basic HTML and CSS Develop a custom website from scratch Learn how to customize WordPress Understand how to utilise the WordPress plug-in library Who can participate Working Library Professionals, Faculty Members, Students and Research scholars. ABOUT TOPIC: Historically Big data has been around for several decades - in fact, in some versions it predates even the Internet and the Web. But ‘Big Data’ has become, along with ‘Analytics’ the all ubiquitous buzzwords only in the more recent past. Also, like the legendary story of the elephant and the blind men, there are several versions of what exactly they are, of their usefulness and application. So how do we separate out the facts from fiction? This talk looks at the concepts and key terms associated with ‘Big Data' and 'Analytics’, the technologies that have risen to deal with them and some examples of practical applications in business and industry. Finally, the talk considers Big Data and Analytics from the perspective of Library and Information Science, understanding some of the experiments carried out and future areas of possible applications. It also briefly covers if the skills of library and information professional can be relevant in this new domain. After all, loosely speaking, are we not the managers of organized data (books/information/knowledge) in the pre big-data world? ABOUT SPEAKER: Suvarsha Minj works as Knowledge Curator in a start-up Kaybus Inc. - a Enterprise SaaS based Knowledge Automation Company. The company works transforming enterprise information into knowledge by personalizing it to individual needs in context using Big Data technologies. In the past, she has worked on several projects at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She was part of the SALIS (Software and Licensing Information System) at ERNET and the project SJPI (Scientific Journal Publishing in India) using Open Journal Systems (OJS) at NCSI. More recently, she has led in porting the 100-year-old journal, The Journal of the Indian Institute of Science into OJS, and digitize and make available on an Archive Management System all the publications - since its inception in 1974 - of the Center for Sustainable Technologies, IISc. She has published some national and international papers based on her work. She has also worked in the corporate sector in several organisations like Yahoo, Hewlett Packard (HP) and General Electric (GE) in various capacities and is an alumnus of NCSI-Net. Dear Colleagues, To encourage global participation the IATUL Travel Grant programme provides financial assistance to library and/or information professionals from developing countries to attend the annual IATUL Conference. Five IATUL travel grants will be awarded to first-time attendees of this conference. Applications are encouraged from librarians at any institution that is an IATUL member or would qualify for IATUL membership (i.e., the institution has a focus or substantial programme in the sciences and/or engineering). When applying for a Travel Grant, please remember that English is the official language of the organization and its annual conference. Travel grants are not intended to cover the full cost of attending the conference. The maximum amount of the grant for one person for this conference is 1.000,- Euros. This must be used to cover conference registration and the remainder for other travel related expenses. Please note that the Conference Organizer is not able to offer assistance with visa applications.
