By this yardstick, many of us, let alone children and the youth, will be found wanting. Don't you think the education we provide our children has a long way to go? Libraries can play a key role in this effort. Let us reflect what we have done as LIS professionals so far and think of plans for the immediate future. There are many great Indian novelists, short story writers and poets, both living and deceased. NBT and Sahitya Akademy have brought out many of their works. And other publishers too, in all Indian languages. Many magazines carry serialized novels, novellas, short stories and poems. I knew as a child several people in my little hometown who used to gather each installment and bind the whole novel into a book. There are a few magazines like *Puthagam Pesutu* (in Tamil), which is entirely devoted to books, writers and ideas. These are performing services similar to the New York Review of Books and TLS. Let us encourage users of our libraries and reading rooms to get interested in such magazines. Someone I know, a writer of historical fiction with three novels in Tamil and one in English and a few more in the pipeline, has decided to read at least one book (in print and not on Kindle) every week. He also belongs to a discussion group which meets once a month to discuss a great novel and the impact it has had on the members of the group and society in general. He belongs to a Facebook list which discusses similar matters. We can encourage such models among users of our libraries. Let us encourage reading among our children and the youth. Our public libraries and school libraries can play a major role in this. It is an encouraging sign that the sale of books is increasing every year at major book fairs in India, albeit most of the sale is accounted for by certain categories (like self-help). Best. Friends: I have chosen to be the messenger bringing some sad news to the LIS community. A great academic librarian and a champion of open access, Fred Friend is no more. Fred was a librarian of the University College of London and an adviser to JISC. He rarely, rather never, talked about himself or his contributions. One can call him self effacing. I had met him a few times (in conferences) and had corresponded with him a few times. His commitment to his work was truly amazing. RIP. Fred was one of the staunchest supporters of Open Access and worked to further its aims for almost two decades. Early in that period he was, of course, Librarian at University College London, a position that gave him influence and the means to push arguments for openness that were at the time new and considered rather heretical. After retirement from that post Fred served for many years as a consultant to JISC, advising and carrying out research work for JISC on scholarly communications. He was in his element in this role as it gave him the opportunities he needed to continue making the arguments for Open Access and to develop practical initiatives that helped to advance the cause. Latterly, Fred pursued his aims through continuing consultancy jobs and indeed at the time of his death he was embarking on an ambitious analysis of OA policies. We have lost a very good friend of Open Access and a great humanitarian. For many there will also be the feeling of losing a kind and loyal personal friend. His daughter, Cate, said to us, “It means so much to hear about his professional life - he was so private and so humble that he never really talked about what he did (I used to joke with him and tell him that I told everyone that he was a spy!).” We would like the OA community -- Fred’s friends -- to let Cate and the rest of Fred’s family know about the work Fred did and the great colleague that he was, so we are going to collect tributes to Fred and his work and will put these together into a book for his family. If you have something to say, please email your words to one of us, including your job title where relevant to give some context to your comments for the family. Thank you in advance for your contributions. For those who can attend the funeral, the ceremony will be held at 12.30pm on Thursday 1st May at St Michael and All Angels, Hughenden, near High Wycombe in the UK. She has been awarded Ph.D.Degree in the year 2005 from Karnatak University, Dharwad. Her Guide and Mentor is Dr. C. R. Karisiddappa, Former Chairman and Professor of the Department of Library and Information Science, (and the Dean, Social Sciences), Karnataka University, Dharwad. Her thesis title: Design and Development of Integrated Information System and Services for Women Health: An Exploratory Community Based Study. Dr. Bhanumathi has over 7 scientific papers published to her credit. She has formally and informally Guided over 5 M. Kendriya Vidyalaya Kanjikode is celebrating World Book and Copyright Day from 21-26 April 2014 with various programmes. Mr. Johnson Mathew, Assistant Commissioner, KVS RO Ernakulam gave away various prizes and awards to the library prize winners of the previous session. * Outstanding Reader of the Year : A Cash Prize of Rs. 1000/- each to ten Best Readers, instituted by Mr. Kiran Ramachandran, an alumni of our Vidyalaya to motivate reading habit. The students were selected based on the library points, Book Lovers Programme for School participation, Readers' Club points and creative writing skills. * Best Library User (School) certificates and gift coupons: To 12 students based on the Library Points secured in the previous academic session * Class of Readers Award : To the class that secures a minimum 1000 library points in the session. * Best Library User (Class): The students who secure the maximum library points in the session in their class * Reading Achievement Certificates: To the students who secure a minimum of 50 library points in the session. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, writer Narahalli Balasubramanya said "We should ensure children emulate great minds if we want them to be responsible citizens. This is possible only if we make them read good books. Today, we are increasingly finding ourselves in the company of corrupt people. It is through books that we can interact with great literary figures such as Bendre and Kuvempu." The event was jointly organised by Karnataka Publishers Association, Kendra Sahitya Akademi, Karnataka Lekhakiyara Sangha and Indian Institute of World Culture. Balasubramanya maintained that the Kendra Sahitya Academy sold books at affordable rates and also gave a funding of Rs 400 crore to the book publishers, annually. "But not many people are aware of books entering market and the works don't reach people," he added. A series of Kannada works written by authors were released on the occasion. Writer Dr Siddalingaiah who released the books said "Books are bridges between our minds and our ancestors' minds. Every home should have a small library." 'Pustaka Bhagya' "The State government has introduced Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya and other schemes. Similarly, they should also implement Pustaka Bhagya," said M V Nagaraj Rao of Shrungara Prakashana. Technical writer in Kannada U B Pavanaja maintained that in Kannada Wikipedia there was dearth of information on Kannada literary works. "There is enough information about English works but not on Kannada novels and literary publications. The Kannada publishers should strive to feed information and synopsis of each work into the Kannada wikipedia," he added. Discovery of a Genius True Librarian

Dear All, First time in my professional career i have discovered/Met a Genius Library professional who is not having a single degree of Library science but having much talent and knowledge in comparison to many big degree holders including myself who posts some useless topics in forums. Please note my intention is not to criticize any one but only to promote such professionals so that others could learn something from them. He ( https://www.facebook.com/wisdombooks ) has registered for our workshop and send me friend request on facebook, i was thinking that the person is having a high qualifications in LIS because of his age (above 60) and the devotion for LIS. During our discussions on facebook he invited for Excel data conversion for Koha at his institute (Bhaktivedanta Research Centre, Kolkatta) but on volunteer basis. My self and My colleague Mr. D.P. Tripathi agreed and he send his complex data in excel format because we never seen such standard data maintained in excel. The job of conversion was very challenging but we did successfully and went kolkata at midnight 11:30 PM, he picked us and we went to his Small library which was maintained perfectly and neatly almost independently. We were surprised to see all modern equipments as well as latest and old collection of manuscripts, examples of technical preservation of original papers to digital preservation methods, use of technology for w! orking comfortably with accuracy and speed etc. After visit of library we sat and asked for his degree and socked to here that he had taken admission in IGNOU but could not complete B.lib/M.lib due to some personal reasons. Then we started some technical discussions about the library technologies and simultaneously i was thinking that he may not be aware about those but surprised when he discussed and replied about all those technologies and tools. We found almost all tools and technology in such a small library including high end scanner (Bookeye4). Due to some complexity in data migrations it took much time and we had to catch our Flight also at 3:00 AM early morning for Assam Univ. Silchar, we were very tired but not seen a single sign of tiredness on his face and sleepy even up to 3 o'clock but ultimately we success in data migration and system setup of koha. Dear friends the above person has taken Indian citizenship but he is Italian and working with such a devotion and duty in the age of 60 is really surprising therefore i request all LIS professionals to meet with such professionals whenever you have time and spare some time with him to learn the real ethics of Librarianship. Now i can assume what was the devotion of Dr. Ranganathan and others during those days because "Angelo Pugliese" has also made his own temporary scheme for classifying documents and taken many Latest technological initiatives for the Library.
