Symposium held at Department of Libray and Information Science, AMU, Aligarh

Department of Library and Information Science, AMU organised a symposium on "*Modern Trends in Library and Information Services*" on 3rd March, 2014 in the conference hall of faculty of social sciences. The chief guest of the occasion was *Prof. Gabriel Gomez* from Chicago State University, Chicago, U.S.A. In his keynote address, Prof. Gomez conversed about the big data and Information Literacy. He talked about the variety of information literacy skill that needs to be incorporated in the information users and stressed upon the lifelong learning phenomena in the present information society. There is a huge ocean of data available at the finger tips of users and the proficiency in identifying and selecting the relevant content out of the whole sum, is imperative for one and all. *Dr. Naushad Ali. P. M.*, coordinator of the symposium welcomed the guests. In his welcome speech, Dr. Naushad Ali laid emphasis on the existence and validity of the library science profession in the contemporary milieu and the challenges facing the information professionals with regard to the ICT enabled techniques and tools. The symposium was presided over by *Prof. Shabahat Husain*, the Dean, faculty of Social Sciences and Chairman, Department of Library and Information Science. In his presidential remarks, he portrayed the comparative analysis of the historical account of the library science profession and the current scenario of the subject and visualized a comprehensive outlook of the profession and the changes that occurred vis-à-vis the response and reactions from the library and information science professionals. The vote of thanks was presented by *Mr. S. Mustafa Zaidi*, associate professor in the Department of Library and Information Science. The program was encompassed of two technical sessions in which about 15 research papers were presented. Respected All http://www.spoken-tutorial.org/ The Spoken Tutorial project is the initiative of the *'Talk to a Teacher'*activity of the *National Mission on Education *through *Information and Communication Technology (ICT)*, launched by the *Ministry of Human Resources and Development*, *Government of India* and IIT Mumbai *The Spoken Tutorial project is about teaching and learning a particular FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) like Linux, Scilab, LaTeX, PHP & MySQL, Java, C/C++, LibreOffice etc. via an easy Video tool - Spoken Tutorials. Some of the salient features of SELF (Spoken Tutorial based Education and Learning through Free FOSS study) Workshops are as follows. * 1. This distance education method is highly conducive to self-learning. 2. Once one gets started any student or faculty can master the FOSS. 3. *UG, PG or research scholar students and even teachers of Science, IT, Engineering, Commerce, Management, MCA disciplines can learn any of the FOSS. * 4. Typically, the first workshop at any college is of 2 hours duration. Timing at the group's convenience. 5. To start of, any college which is organising the workshop needs to get a computer lab ready with machines that support sound and have internet connectivity. There is no lower or upper limit on the number of participants. This just depends on the number of computers available. For additional participants, laptops if available can be used. 6. The main organiser's computer should have a webcam via which the Spoken Tutorial team can monitor the workshop over Skype. 7. Within a month of the workshop, participants take an assessment test and on clearing it get certificates from Spoken Tutorial Project, IIT Bombay. *As a first step, the organiser typically a faculty member must register on the Spoken Tutorial site and become authorised to request and conduct training workshops in his/her college. The organiser can also identify student volunteers to publicise and help with the workshop. Students have a lot of energy and are very enthusiastic about such activities. Student volunteers get a special certificate, and a T-shirt! Vijayakumar K P Head, DLIS, University of Kerala Trivandrum *National Workshop on* *Management of E-resources in Academic Libraries* *20** - 22 March 2014* *Organized by* *Department of Library and Information Science **University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 034* *Kerala, India* *Introduction* A tremendous shift is taking place in libraries towards purchasing information resources, with a major portion of the budget being allocated to the acquisition of e-resources. As libraries build ever-larger collections of electronic resources, finding ways to manage them efficiently becomes a major challenge. The number of electronic journals, citation databases, and full-text aggregations held by most libraries has grown rapidly. Managing these electronic resources involves providing the library's user with convenient ways to find and access them and providing library staff with the tools to keep track of them. Libraries subscribe to electronic content in a number of different ways. Some publishers offer packages that include many electronic journals, some products may include electronic journals from many different publishers, and libraries acquire some electronic journals individually. Abstracting-and-indexing (A&I) products include citations to articles in journals from many different publishers. And since not everything is in electronic form, print resources cannot be neglected. There are two fundamental aspects to managing electronic resources: 1. The front-end details of delivering the content to library users, and 2. Managing the business details of back-end staff functions related to acquisition, payment, and licensing. But the situation in India is such that many of the library professionals including library mangers are incapable of handling the issue due to their unfamiliarity with the situation. The result is that many of them have to learn the techniques of management of e-resources by trial and error method. It is in this context that the Department of Library and Information Science is organizing a National Workshop on *Management of E-resources in Academic Libraries. * *Objectives of the Workshop* The specific objectives of the Workshop are: - . To make an overview of the diversity of e-resources - . To make the LIS professionals aware of the specific problems involved in the management of e-resources - . To familiarize them with the latest developments in the field, and - . To offer solutions to tackle the central issues with the concepts of the access and management of electronic resources. *Target group* The Workshop is primarily intended for the middle level and senior level library and information professionals of colleges, universities and full time teaching faculty of Library and Information Science schools covering the entire country. The number of participants is restricted to 40. *Resource persons* Resource persons include academicians and seasoned LIS professionals having extensive experience in the field. *Venue and Date * The venue of the Workshop is Department of Library and Information Science. The programme is scheduled during 20 - 22 March 2014. *Registration* The Registration fee is Rs. 250.00. The fee can be paid by demand draft drawn in favour of the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 034. Admission is based on first come first served basis. However, efforts will be made to give representation to maximum number of institutions. *Travel and accommodation* We are in a position to give only to and fro second class train fare to the participants.
