Dear All, It is extremely sorry to inform you the sad demise of Libn. A R Sethi, former University Librarian, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Ex. Deputy Librarian, J.N.U. New Delhi. A man of strong discipline and principles, he immensely contributed to the LIS profession. He was Head of Documentation Division in J.N.U., New Delhi. The computerisation of Panjab University Library had undergone during his tenure as University Librarian. To start the SATKAL Trust (Satinder Kaur Ramdev Memorial Trust for Advancement of Librarianship Trust) was the brainchild of Libn. Sethi. I whole heartedly pay my tribute to such a great soul. Books for All : a noble social venture

Dear friends, Pravin Bhasin, a professional manager with over 40 years of experience in top Indian MNCs, is in a new role for the past three years. Bhasin is the founder of the NGO 'Books for All' which makes good-quality books available to underprivileged children in schools which do not have libraries. Books for All is spearheaded by Pravin and Kanchan Bhasin. "The initial idea was very simple - to collect old and unused children's books lying in homes like ours," said Pravin about the reasons for the establishment of Books for All. "We started our first centre at Prathmik Pathshala, Gejha, on January 30, 2010, with the aim of helping children of Hindi-medium schools, mostly from underprivileged families, realise the importance of education as a ladder for a better quality of life and a focused career." "We converted one room," said Kanchan, "into a library. Infrastructure such as a white board, soft board and table to do artwork was provided, so that the children could look forward to spending their free time and be encouraged to read books." Books for All has a full-time librarian-cum-caretaker in charge of the centre who helps the children select books and further initiate the process of self-study. Books for All, which started out as a basic library concept, has become a multi-pronged initiative striving to tap the children's hidden talents such as public speaking, art and craft, theatre, and singing. "We want Books for All to complement the education system, by setting up library-cum-creativity centres in government/aided schools across North India. We want to help children realise their potential, boost their vitality and seize the opportunities that higher education can open to them," according to Kanchan. Pravin says they need a central warehouse for sorting, coding and further distribution of all material needed for the schools and for the children. They need to organise collection centres for books in offices and malls in major cities and transport all collections to the central warehouse. "The organisation also needs like-minded and committed volunteers to help take our mission forward," says Pravin. A good university must have a good library, otherwise it does not serve its purpose. Many students are disappointed every year when they do not make the cut to the mostly post-graduate, research-oriented Jawaharlal Nehru University. Since a seat at this university is as difficult to come by as some global universities that are famed for their libraries, the nine-storied JNU library too is trying to fulfil the expectations from it. “We have six lakh printed books and one lakh e-books available for circulation. We subscribe to 800 print journals annually from all major international and some Indian publications. We also have access to around 2,300 newspapers from 97 countries in 52 languages, and around 55 research databases. Currently, we also have 8 lakh digital newspaper clippings which are relevant to 72 subjects, and possess a rare collection of Urdu, Persian and Art books,” said JNU’s head librarian Ramesh Gaur, who was called in around two years ago to overhaul the library which had been leaderless for almost five years. “The most recent activity we carried out was to digitise around 20,000 thesis and dissertations, the hard copies of which were lying around. Those that are more than three years old can be accessed from anywhere in the world, whereas the others will be available on the net anywhere on the campus,” he said, adding that when he got there, the first thing he noticed was the mess in the mezzanine section on the ninth floor. The “before” pictures of this area show dusty books stacked high and almost reaching the ceiling, while “after” pictures show students sitting on wooden benches calmly reading or writing. “The room was hardly used, serving as a warehouse of sorts which was a pity since the view was so nice,” he said. There are lifts, so it is easy to make use of the stunning view of the entire campus as well as the neighbourhood. “The library has a carpet area of one lakh square feet and a seating capacity of 1,000. It opens at 8 a.m. and remains open until midnight. There is also a 24/7 reading room, which can seat more than a hundred on the ground floor. We have around 200 computers and a special section called “Helen Keller” meant for visually-challenged students with the latest assisted technology. Locker facilities are given to Ph.D. students and another new addition is more plug points for students to charge their computers. All our material has been catalogued,” Dr. Gaur said. Libraries have to evolve so there is a stock verification done routinely. The library, in a bid to be more involved, has also started the “JNU forum for mutual learning” where it organises guest lectures and author workshops. “Students want these workshops; we have editors coming and telling them how to get their work published, how to write abstracts, proposal letters and everything. We also organise book releases and other talk programmes and conferences,” he said. The latest facility the library has procured is the “turn it in” software that checks plagiarism. The university has made it compulsory for students to run their thesis through this software that points out any similarities that might exist with the work submitted and any other publication. “The Ph.D. supervisor also puts the thesis through this software, even after the student has submitted the report.” The library went one step further this past year when it set up a stall at the World Book Fair in the city showcasing student and faculty publications. “That was a first,” added Dr. Gaur. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Kimane Ratnakar: A Politician with Difference

It was indeed very heartening to not that Kimane Ratnakar, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education and Department for Public Libraries in Karnataka State Government, saved six precious lives with his heroic act. Thanks a lot for Prof. Shalini R. Urs for bringing this exemplary and brave act of Kimane Ratnakar to the notice of LIS community through this forum. This is very significant that we are living in a time where politicians are exposed one side for their corrupt practices on a daily basis and on the other side we are witnessing an upsurge of communal politics, both are dangerous to the democratic set up of this country. Because of politicians’ illegal act, people especially our young minds are in recent time getting disillusioned of politics and politicians. In this context, it is very important for sharing a good samaritan work of politicians. After going through Prof. Shalini R. Urs madam posting on brave act of Kimane Ratnakar, I thought of sharing my encounter with him. I have had the opportunity to hear him twice in the land of socialist movement Shivamogga in August 2012 and this year in April. He was the chief guest for both the programs. One was the two day event organized by a group of likeminded people from Bellary on the theme “Progressive Movements in Karnataka” (ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಕಂಡ ಚಳವಳಿಗಳು)in Kuppalli, the birth place of modern Kannada literary icon Kuvempu in August 2012. This place also comes under the jurisdiction of Thirthahalli. Kimane Ratnakar is elected twice from the same constituency. He was presiding over the inaugural session of the program on “Progressive Movements in Karnataka”. On this occasion, Kimane Ratnakar spoke so eloquently about the literary works of Kuvempu and how Shivamogga a land of socialist movement responsible for bringing a revolutionary change in land reforms act in 1970s in Karnataka State. Through his speech one could make out easily that he is so erudite. He came to the program alone with his car driver and sat in last row without drawing any attention. Even he came in the second day also and heard few speeches sitting alone. He left the avenue without even giving any hint that he was there. This is what one of the participants wrote about Kimane Ratnakar in the online Kannada literary website Kendasampige.com (http://kendasampige.com/article.php?id=5615). I quote “ನಮಗೆ ಅಚ್ಚರಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದು ಎಂದರೆ ಶಾಸಕಕಿಮ್ಮನೆ ರತ್ನಾಕರ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಂತೆ ಡ್ರೈವರ್ ಜತೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಶಾಸಕ ಯಾವ ಹಮ್ಮುಬಿಮ್ಮಗಳಿಲ್ಲದೇ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಎಲ್ಲರ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮೀರಿಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಇಂತಹ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ಇಂಥಹ ಶಾಸಕರೂ ಇದ್ದಾರಾ..? ಎಂದು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನೇಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿತು.” Another program was the 78th birthday celebration of famous literary figure and a well known journalist P. Lankesh in Shivamogga in April this year. On the occasion Kimane Ratnakar spoke about the lack of political awareness among the people. He said, he would be very happy if a person of his constituency asks him about what he did in the State assembly, his role in policy framework, questions he raised in the assembly sessions, funds utilized for the development of the constituency but he regretted that instead of asking him about his work as MLA, people invite him for home ceremonies, marriages, and birthday celebrations etc. This is very important today we expect that our MLA or local politicians should solve our personal problems. Because of this precise reasons that, there is money, caste and all other illegal acts played out openly in today’s politics. Politicians are there to involve in policy framework, participating in assembly discussions, not to solve personal problems or participating in home ceremonies, marriages etc. The new elected government in Karnataka has given him right portfolios as Minster for Primary and Secondary Education and also Department of Public Libraries. Both these portfolios are very sensitive and looking for revolutionary changes. Public primary education system in Karnataka is in very pathetic state. There is an immediate need to improve public school infrastructure and also quality of teaching otherwise strong private education lobby will destabilize this and keep out of poor children from schools. Kimane Ratnakar is very much aware of this fact. He recently spoke about nationalization of primary education. This is the first time after so many years, State Primary Education minister is talking of nationalization of schools. If this becomes a reality, would remain as landmark decision in the history of primary education in Karnataka. We would also hope that there will be a sea changing in public library system in Karnataka which is also in dire need of attention. Given that fact that, his progressive thinking mindset and humble political career, he would certainly (as he did to save six people) do good in both this ministry to help people of this state to educate and enrich their knowledge.
