Library of Congress works to save priceless recordings

(CBS News) CULPEPER, Va. -- Cameras and microphones are virtually everywhere these days, and it seems just about everything that happens is preserved forever on the internet. Of course, it wasn't always that way. The Library of Congress has just reported that 80 percent of motion pictures filmed before 1930 -- and countless audio recordings from that era -- are gone. But the library has a plan to stop this bleeding of priceless history. A 1936 Louis Armstrong recording is an artifact nearly lost to time. It's a nickel-plated disc widely used to record sound in the first half of the 20th century. "It's the equivalent to an original camera negative for a motion picture," says Patrick Loughney, who is leading the effort to save these cultural relics for the Library of Congress. "What goes on here is the archaeology of American popular audio-visual history," Loughney says. When you think of the Library of Congress, you think of old documents and typewriter-smudged papers. Not here. "It's quite remarkable that the library, very early on, got into the acquisition of sound recordings and then radio programs," Loughney says. "They were considered a cultural record." Cylinders invented by Thomas Edison in the 1800s were recently donated by a private collector. They are the first known devices to record sound. "It was literally beeswax, so it could melt if you heated it up too high or dropped it would break," says Loughney. One recording, now digitally restored, is an 1896 campaign song for William McKinley. Watch: Library of Congress sports interviews go beyond wins and losses, below. The library has 90 miles of shelves at its 45-acre conservation campus in Culpeper, Va. Here, specialists are preserving more than a million motion pictures, including an 1894 film called "Annabel Butterfly." It's one of the oldest known films ever restored -- each frame was originally colored by hand. Technicians have digitized thousands of TV shows, including the only appearance of The Doors on "The Ed Sullivan Show." They've even restored color to a 1975 blues documentary. "There is a growing amnesia about America past," Loughney says. "Our job is to try and bolster that American memory, try to save it for future generations who might find value in what we're preserving." Because we are here to help, we made for you a list of some of the best comedy books — broken down into memoirs, humor, history, and fiction — that would be right at home on any comedy lover's shelf (or on your "E-reader"). Memoirs Bossypants by Tina Fey Tina Fey chronicles her life from nerd-dom to motherhood and everything in between, including her work on Second City, SNL, 30 Rock, and more. Zombie Spaceship Wasteland by Patton Oswalt Oswalt mixes stories of his formative years as a D&D-playing nerd with other vignettes including poems, movie reviews, greeting cards. A Bad Idea I'm About to Do: True Tales of Seriously Poor Judgment and Stunningly Awkward Adventure by Chris Gethard Comic, actor, writer, and Chris Gethard Show creator Chris Gethard tells of all his life's moments that have been beyond awkward, like more awkward than yours when you say things are awkward. Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16 by Moshe Kasher LA stand-up comedian Moshe Kasher relates his story, a complicated one that you can probably get an idea of from this memoir's lengthy subtitle. Daddy's Boy: A Son's Shocking Account of Life with a Famous Father by Chris Elliott Famous father with a famous father Chris Elliott writes about life as the youngest son of Bob Elliott of comedy duo Bob and Ray. The memoir has a unique format — Chris and his dad switch off chapters, Bob providing a rebuttal for every story Chris shares. A Liar's Autobiography by Graham Chapman The Monty Python actor's unique memoir, originally published in 1980, was released as a 3D animated movie in 2012. Unusual for an autobiography, the book is credited to five authors: Chapman, his partner David Sherlock, Alex Martin, Douglas Adams, and David A. Yallop. Eric Idle provides an afterword. Obama split on location of presidential library

By: CNN Wire WASHINGTON - He holds a strong association with both places - Hawaii is his birthplace and winter retreat, but Chicago is his adopted home and where his children were born. President Barack Obama said he's still not sure which location would be the home of his presidential library. "Honolulu is my birthplace," Obama said on an interview with Honolulu station KITV. "It's the place where I grew up and I've got so many friends and fond memories and it helped to shaped me. I'd like to find a way after my presidency that connection remains, but I live in Chicago now and that's where I grew up professionally." "It is a tough choice, but it's not one that I've made yet," Obama said. Reports in the last year have indicated that Obama's team is looking at space for a presidential library in Chicago, including near the University of Chicago where he taught before entering politics. Universities have housed presidential libraries in the past, including the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Museum and Library on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station. But the University of Hawaii has also made no secret of their desire to house Obama's presidential library, and the Aloha State's legislature passed a resolution in 2010 calling on Obama to choose his birthplace for the institution. An official committee of business and civic leaders -- the Hawaii Presidential Center Initiative -- was formed to try and lure the president back to the islands. Obama acknowledged those efforts in his interview. "Folks back home, back in Hawaii, have been very generous in talking about how much they'd like to figure out a way to participate post-presidency and I'm flattered by that and I'm going to look at every option," he said. No matter where the library lands, it will likely cost north of $100 million, based on the whopping costs of past presidents' libraries. The money comes from private donations. The libraries have the potential to become major tourist draws, particularly for an historic presidency like Obama's. While Chicago's central location would make a library more accessible to Americans, Hawaii is already a major tourist destination that millions of mainlanders visit every year. -- Warm regards. With reference to the subject Ihave a query whether a paper presented in absentia in an International Conference having published the proceedings with the ISBN no. can be directed to any other JOURNAL???? Does it has an impact of duplication??? I mean same paper published in a conference proceedings with ISBN number and that same paper is also being published in a JOURNAL?? Is it possible?? If YES then what is the PROCEDURE for doing the same??? Please reply at the earliest!!!
