WASHINGTON (AP) — The Library of Congress says it's amassed about 170 billion tweets since it began collecting an archive of all Twitter messages in 2010. Twitter is donating its archive to the library, going back to the first one posted in 2006. Library Director of Communications Gayle Osterberg wrote in a blog post Friday that the volume of tweets it receives has grown from 140 million daily in February 2011 to nearly half a billion tweets each day in late 2012. Librarians have been developing a system to preserve and organize the collection. Now the library is shifting its focus to handle the technical challenges of making such a massive archive available to researchers. The library may work with a private partner to provide access because its own search technology is slow. The Deputy Librarian of Congress talks with Fast Company about where to start. When the Library of Congress began archiving new tweets in February 2011, it would transfer about 140 million new tweets each day from temporary servers onto magnetic film. By the next October, that number had soared to about 400 million tweets per day. There are now about 170 billion tweets in the archive, which also includes a collection of all tweets going back to 2006 that the library acquired from Twitter in 2010. The library’s two compressed copies of the data total 133.2 terabytes. “It’s a few cabinets of tape,” explains Robert Dizard, the deputy librarian at the Library of Congress. “It’s not a roomful or roomfuls. And that’s just a testament of the storage capacity of tape.” The size of Twitter is on the order of the size of the Internet, just in tweets instead of web pages. Since the library signed an agreement with Twitter in 2010 that gave it access to historical tweets, a small team of its staff have been working to establish a sustainable process for acquiring and storing tweets. Now they’re transitioning their efforts to the significantly more difficult challenge of providing access to the archive they've built. Running a search term through a body of data as big as the tweet archive, Dizard says, could take more than 24 hours. The archived tweets are already indexed by time, but an hour of tweets could contain millions of 140-character snippets--not so helpful for someone doing research about a specific topic. The library has experience with large digital collections. It regularly archives, for instance, websites, government databases, and policy events. But Twitter is new territory. “It’s not only very large,” Dizard says. “It’s expanding daily and at an increasing velocity. The variety of tweets is high.” Not even Twitter, which employs some of the best engineers in Silicon Valley, has attempted to create a searchable archive of tweets. That’s partly because the commercial demand for historical access pales in comparison to that for real-time advertising. But the massive server space and resources such a project would consume are certainly another factor. Jamie de Guerre, VP Product at Topsy, a private company that provides some access to the Twitter archive, compares the task of indexing Twitter to indexing the entire Internet. “Google’s index of the entire Internet ranges from about, in some estimates, 45 billion web pages to 125 billion web pages,” he told Fast Company in a recent interview. “So the size of Twitter is on the order of the size of the Internet, just in tweets instead of web pages. Having all of that data available, being able to query across and return a large data file to a user is definitely quite a challenge.” In its first step to addressing the challenge, the library is talking with third-party companies that could potentially manage access to the archive. Given current resources, a solution for access is not likely to be a search engine that can locate a specific tweet. Dizard says he has no idea how a viable solution might look, but that abandoning the project isn't an option. “Our mission is to collect, preserve, and provide access to creative and historical record of America,” he says. “We’re looking at Twitter from a research and scholarship perspective as providing a reflection of everyday life as well as showing the development and impact of significant events. You also have the record and recordings of individuals. CENTRAL LIBRARY JAWAHARLAL NEHRU UNIVERSITY January 04, 2013 The Central Library, Jawaharlal Nehru University has a sizable collection of bound volumes of the newspapers. Due to the space constraints the Central Library, JNU is not in position to further maintain the collection and intends to donate these volumes of the newspapers to interested libraries/other organizations of the preferably Government organizations. However, in case of no proposal is received from government organizations, proposals of private organizations may be considered. The interested library has to provide an undertaking that: 1. The newspapers have to be put for use by scholars/ users without any charge. 2. Disposal of the newspapers will not be done without written permission of the Central Library, JNU. 3. The transportation, packaging and other related cost to be borne by the concerned library. 4. The library needs to provide details of future use of these volumes of newspapers. 5. Moorthy, former Director, DESIDOC, Delhi. On the occasion, Dr Justice Y. Bhaskara Rao, former Chief Justice of Karnataka, former Chairman, AP State Human Rights Commission and former Member, National Human Rights Commission and presently President, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Hyderabad & Secunderabad) released the felicitation volume titled *Electronic Resources Management in Libraries* in the presence of Shri K. Narasimha, IPS, DIG (Retd) & former Chairman, AP Public Service Commission, Hyderabad and Dr S.S. Murthy, former Director, DESIDOC, DRDO, Delhi. Shri M Jagannadham, IAS, Jt Collector and Guest of Honour, Hyderabad could not attend the Meeting due to official exigencies. The function organised by Dr. A.L. Moorthy Felicitation Committee members and presided by Prof. L.S. Ramaiah, former University Librarian, CIEFL, Hyderabad was attended by more than 100 senior Library & Information Science (LIS) professionals. The book is edited by Dr CK Ramaiah, Professor & Head, Dept of LIS, Pondicherry University and published by Allied Publishers, Delhi. Dr A.L. Moorthy, rendered more than 33 years of service in Satish Dhawan Space Centre, ISRO, Srihari Kota, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad and DESIDOC, Delhi (all DRDO) in various capacities. He superannuated on 30 June 2012 as Director, DESIDOC, Delhi. As mark of honour, some of his friends and well wishers brought out a Festschrift volume. Dr. A. L. Moorhty’s contributions to LIS profession are significant and noteworthy. He introduced many new services and innovative techniques for optimal utilization of information resources. He established digital libraries at DRDL and at DESIDOC. He created web-based and project oriented information services to all R&D scientists of DRDO through its intranet. He has guided the development of Library Automation Software, Database of Library Holdings and Union Catalogue of Periodical Holdings. He improved the quality, coverage, content and timely publication of periodicals both as Editor for a decade and as Editor-in-Chief. He was instrumental in starting new publications like Technology Focus, DRDO Monographs & Special Publications. He has initiated and realized DRDO Consortium for providing online access of over 550 R&D journals to all DRDO Labs. He established Knowledge Repository of DRDO Technical Reports and an Institutional Repository of papers published by DRDO scientists. Dr Justice Bhaskara Rao told that the volume contains 39 high quality papers written by experts from the field and the subject is highly relevant in the contemporary developments in the LIS field. He extensively quoted many Sanskrit *slokas* enunciating the value of education and Knowledge and the role of libraries in furthering them. Shri Narasimha mentioned that the research papers published in the volume covered various areas including digital resource management and intellectual property rights. He felt that R&D in the country is used for both human developments as well as for destruction like atomic bombs and emphasized LIS professionals to see that R&D should be used for Societal development. Dr SS Murthy recalled his association with and contributions made by Dr AL Moorthy who worked with passion but was strict disciplinarian which invited dissent from colleagues at times. Prof LS Ramaiah in his Presidential Address stressed the changing face of the libraries in the light of technologies, the importance of the electronic resources, opined that the book is a valuable addition to the knowledge and summed up the proceedings. This was followed by felicitation of DR AL Moorthy by the LIS professionals. Earlier Dr CK Ramaiah, Secretary, Dr. A.L. Moorthy Felicitation Committee welcomed the invitees.
