Librarians face complex challenges posed by recent trends in Information and Communication Technology. The role of the Library professional has become more dynamic and challenging in the modern world. Recent technological advances have changed the work of librarians and researchers. The increased availability of electronic resources, including electronic databases and journals, has changed the way library users interact with libraries. Librarians have had to keep current with a variety of new resources and implement support mechanisms for these resources. There are various new fields evolving apart from the existing ones. The librarians of today have to manage old resources as well as scale up to the upcoming technologies to manage and maintain their new digital domain. The future of librarians as information providers is not in a dazzling building, but in the world of cyberspace that resides in the hand-held devices of most library customers, and as an indispensable partner in the local and world communities. Why this event? Globalization is defined by the spread and integration of people, goods, finance, knowledge and culture across the planet. Each of these dimensions of globalization has advanced since the dawn of civilization, at a pace determined by the available technologies for different purposes. E stands for electronic, D for digital and V for virtual. We would rather define the appearance of E, D and V as a phenomenon in e-society that takes place in a way where everyone can see objects and do things in a virtual world against a physical one; where everything is converted into digital formats and saved for use/reuse and represented in a virtual way; where everywhere is connected to a world wide web and any information, knowledge and services can be accessed by anyone, anywhere and anytime through any kind of devices. The conference aims to address the main issues of concern within WWW/Internet as well as to assess the influence of Internet in the Information Society. Broad areas of interest are Internet Technologies, Information Management, e-Society and Digital Divide, e-Learning, New Media and e-Society, Digital Services in e-Society. Format of the Conference The conference will be an educative mixture of invited talks and oral presentations. The event will have a keynote address and multiple technical sessions. JNU Library Catalogue available online through WebOPAC

Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to inform you all that now JNU Library catalogue is available online through WebOPAC from JNU Library website. The URL is given below: http://www.jnu.ac.in/Library/default.htm Apart from books, over 7.5 lacs news clippings are also part of JNU Catalogue. The process of cataloging of over 1 lac foreign languages books and 1.1 lacs bound volumes besides about 1 lac other publications is also in process. The digitization of 8000 theses will start soon followed by digitization over10000 microfilm rolls, and 3000 rare books. Digitization of over 7.5 lacs news clipping has been done. During the summer vacation reorganization of entire library has been taken up. The work involves regrouping of various subject collections, preparation of list for write off for old/damaged books and review of collections to identify the obsolete books. The help from subject experts have also been taken up. Redesigning of library portal, training programme for library staff in fulfilling the needs of visually impaired students, monthly lecture series, author workshops for faculty & Students, remote server to access e-resources, renovation of library space and procurement of new library furniture are some of the task to provide better services to the users of JNU Library. This semester onwards the submission of e-theses has been made compulsory for all Mphil and Ph.D scholars. Installation of Fire fighting system and CCTV is also in the process. The JNU is one of the best University in the world and our mission is to setup a world class library at JNU. I am sure with the help of excellent library team at JNU, we are going to achieve all set objectives.
