Thanks very much Madhan. Ronald (Roly) Keating was educated at Westminster School for boys in London, followed by Balliol College at the University of Oxford, where he read Classics. He managed several divisions of BBC, an electronic media company, for much of his professional life. And now he will be managing one of the world's largest national libraries. Incidentally, Keating never went to a library school. Same is the case with James H Billington, the Librarian of Congress, Washington DC. He read history at Balliol College, Oxford, and Princeton University and later on taught history for many years. He wrote several books on Russian history. He had also not gone to a library school for formal training. His predecessor Daniel Boorstin was trained in Law and taught law for several years but wrote many history books and even won a Pulitzer Prize for history. He had also no formal training from a library school. In India, the qualifications and work experience prescribed for working in libraries would not have allowed Roly Keating, James Billington and Daniel Boorstin even to work in a high school or small town library. Different culture operate differently. Some insist on formal qualifications and for others it is OK if one can deliver! Keating's predecessor, Ms Lynne Brindley, of course, was a trained librarian. She studied librarianship at the School of Librarianship, University College London, where she was awarded the Sir John MacAlister award as the top student on her course. Closure of NCSI

Dear Professional Friends, It is indeed moving news about National Centre for Science Information (NCSI). I happen to witness its legacy in 1999 when Dr. TBR was heading the team. My friends were the interns of NCSI training program. My interactions with them have sharpened my technology skills. Till today, I was looking forward for training programs organized by NCSI. I rarely missed their programs. My sweet memories goes back to recall my participation in some of their programs. The last program that I attended, couple of years back, was the hands-on workshop on PMBILS and VuFind organized by Dr. Anuradha. It is not disparaging to others, if I tend to think that probably NCSI lost its glory along with Dr. TBR. The flagship training program was stopped in 2007 (?) and the talks, guest lectures and workshops which were very often in NCSI events calendar became very rare. NCSI was regarded as a center which showcased its performance of having all qualities and facilities to become i-School (Information School) producing professionals tuned perfectly to corporate and special libraries. MLISc completed graduates were eager to join NCSI with a strong career aspirations. I am saddened to understand that such an institute has been officially closed in 2012. LIS Forum was one of the offshoot services from NCSI. This was start quite early before other professions were yet to understand the concept of online discussion forum. Now, LIS-FORUM has grown as a big banyan tree. I am sure it has members from all parts the world. I am sure Dr. Francis will convince IISc to support this Forum which keeps NCSI in our mind and heart. If not, I would plead for taking over of LIS Forum by some Library Associations or LIS Departments at Universities or the NSCI alumni Network or some reputed libraries. Closure of NCSI

Dear Professional Friends, “The National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), IISc, Bangalore, does not exist anymore… With the closure of NCSI, there is a question mark about its continuity from the IISc domain”. This news came to me as a thunder shock. I am not sure how to react. I thought, after all it is the internal policy decision of IISc and I do not have to react. But, next moment I lost myself in my thoughts about the duo – NCSI and LIS-FORUM. My mind became philosophical. Quotes like “all good things come to an end”, “As beautiful as the sun shines, it always sets”, “Don't cry because its over; smile because it happened” , etc started bombarding my mind. Which course of thought I should take? I did not find answer for this. NCSI always reminds me of Dr.T.B. Rajashekar. I haven’t had any formal association with NCSI at any point of time. But unknowingly the institute became close to my heart. I did take advantage of their knowledge and services when I was doing my doctoral degree. I was one of the beneficiaries to get their SDI service when I became teacher at University of Mysore. I consider it as one of the knowledge hubs in LIS in India. Probably, this is the reason why it pains me when I hear the news. I can’t imagine my mail box without mails from [LIS-FORUM]. At this juncture, I have to congratulate the moderator for being truly ‘democratic’ in his approach. I think that is the precise reason why the LIS-FORUM became a sine-qua-non for Indian LIS fraternity. It was one of the main sources for me to keep myself updated. I am really muted to hear that it might not continue. Probably this might be the last posting in LIS-FORUM from my side! Recently I was discussing with one of the senior respected professional. He was concerned about the situation wherein many leading libraries have not filled ‘Chief Librarian’ posts. Added to the burn, the good institutes like NCSI have become part of history. I am forced to ponder upon the question whether the Indian LIS profession is at the crossroads? -- N.S. Dear LIS Professionals, LIS Forum has been an informal teacher for me for years. Innumerable library professionals who do not have a set of people to guide in person for resolving the professional issues have found it very useful and helpful. I became a member of LIS Forum a number of years ago. Since then, I have been depending on LIS Forum for valuable guidance. My association with this forum has helped me with every step of my professional activities. The Indian LIS community felt proud for having such a wonderful platform like LIS Forum which constituted a platform for integrating and sharing the knowledge. The forum even the facilitated the document delivery which has been crucial for library professionals. It is a very heartbreaking to know that NCSI is coming to an end which intern puts a full stop to LIS Forum. I strongly recommend that LIS Forum should continue to be alive without which the Indian LIS professionals would have a hard time for obtaining the updates in LIS field. I wish to state that, many other branches of since which came into existence, still do not have a forum such as LIS Forum to integrate and disseminate the knowledge. I have noticed people from science and technology field who whole heartedly praised the system (LIS Forum) that LIS people have to communicate with counterparts and harmonize the information sources. NCSI: A Melancholic end

Dear Sir/Madam, It is very sad to know the closure of NCSI (National Centre for Scientific Information). Since its inception in 1983 NCSI has played a very significant role in providing support for enhancing the quality of LIS education in India through its flagship program of training LIS graduates in Information and Knowledge Management (IKM). NCSI, through its IKM training program not only trained our young LIS professionals to manage digital information, NCSI laid the foundation for redesigning and re-modifying LIS curriculum in many universities across India to move with the changing information landscape. NSCI has also provided a way to many of the LIS professionals who trained in IKM program to move to corporate world. Today we can see many of the LIS professionals working in corporate sector with new and diversified designations (information scientists, information manager, knowledge manager, information executives, domain experts etc.). Another significant contribution of NSCI is the establishment of India’s first institutional repository for archiving scholarly communications of the IISc research output. NSCI has also played a major role in imparting training for establishing IR in many of the research organizations and universities in India. It is appropriate to remember Late T. B. Rajshekar for making NCSI one of the best institutes for training Library graduates in Information and Knowledge Management. NCSI under his leadership had seen tremendous growth. When he was heading the institute NCSI was the entry point for many of the LIS graduates for repositioning their career in LIS profession. His sudden and untimely death made NCSI orphaned. The only way to offer tribute to T. B. Rajshekar sir is through keep LIS forum active.
