Koha & Dspace workshops (OSS Labs) in Mumbai - 27th to 29th April

All, Just a reminder of upcoming Koha and Dspace workshops in Mumbai (dates have changed since last announcement). The Koha workshop is scheduled as follows: Mumbai: 27th (Friday) & 28th April (Saturday), 2012 And the Dspace workshops are scheduled as follows: Mumbai: 22nd (Sunday) April, 2012 The objectives of this program are to: - Train library professionals & staff on using Koha/Dspace - To test and certify their readiness to use the software This is a 2 day program for Koha and 1 day program on Dspace, covering the key modules and functions in the software. At the end of program, participants will be required to demonstrate their skills on the various modules. Participants who complete 60% of the exercises successfully will be awarded a Basic skills certificate. Participation fee for the workshops are as follows: Koha (2 day workshop): Rs. 3,000 per head Dspace (1 day workshop): Rs. 1,500 per head. Participants can register in one (Koha or Dspace) of both the programs, as the are on contiguous dates. Public sector organisations produce, collect and share vast amounts of information, such as meteorological, traffic and socio-economic data, health and statistical data, cultural information and others. Public sector information is the “raw material” for new added value services, but it is often difficult for third parties to re-use it. Many countries have updated their public information laws to adapt to the new opportunities through the digitisation of information. PSI re-use (Public Sector Information) goes beyond traditional e-government concepts and transactional information exchanges between public sector and business/citizens. The awareness for PSI issues, from policy to legal and technological questions varies from country to country and depends on open information flows between different stakeholders, as well as a change of mindset in the public sector. This new thinking encourages new forms of public engagement and leads to democratization of government data.What are the trends and developments in public information in India? Will the Electronic Delivery of Service Bill (EDS) increase transparency and enhanced cohesion? About the Speaker: Waltraut Ritter is managing director of Knowledge Dialogues which she founded in Hong Kong in 1997, specializing in applied relating to innovation, knowledge, and intellectual capital. She has worked in information and knowledge management since 1989, when she served as information management consultant for the United Nations Development Programme in Geneva and New York. In recent years, she has focused on the knowledge economy and innovation initiatives for national and international agencies in the public sector. She is visiting faculty at the International School of Information Management the University of Mysore (India) and was Professor for Knowledge Management at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. She holds an MA in Information Science and Sociology from the Free University of Berlin and an MBA from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. She has been involved the UN World Summit of Information Society process from 2003 to 2005 and subsequent UN Internet governance forum (IGF) working group on Open Data. UGC Chairman Ved Prakash Batting for Private higher educational Institutions

Dear Sir/Madam, This is really shocking for higher education fraternity. The Chairman of UGC Ved Prakash is full of praise for private higher educational institutions in a function organized by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). To a response to UGC Chairman's comment T.S. Rao has published an interesting piece in Deccan Herald titled "UGC chairman eulogising private institutions is invidious" on 3rd April 2012. It is note worthy that private institutions were largely responsible for selling fake M Phil and Ph. D certificates in Tamil Nadu and across the country. Private education institutions would not open their shop for poor rural people they open shops for rich of this society. Recent Chethan Bagat's Revolution 20-20 is best example how an disgusted IIT aspirant (who failed to enter IITs) become chairman of an engineering college and making money out of it. Whole book in a way portray how our education system is weakening because large number of private players entering to this field. Now UGC chairman who had a brief stint at the world bank before coming to the UGC office batting for the private players. It is no surprise our government is in a urge to open our educational system for foreign players. Globalization the big shark is swallowing our culture, our identity in the name of competition, efficiency, and quality (traits of market economy). competition, efficiency, and quality. are the mantra of private players, government is chanting their mantra to escape from the basic constitutional right. Because it has promised to the World Bank that soon India would open its educational system, agriculture, retail market (big malls are every where in India) for you to make money. It is already too late, UGC chairman, Swamijis all are now trying to build a consensus for government to act swiftly to help them.
