AMLANC-2013: Managing Indian Media Libraries and Archives, New Delhi, 4-5 February 2013 Jointly hosted by Association of Media Libraries and Archives and JNU Jawaharlal Nehru University, the 1st AMLA National conference will take place in New Dehli. The conference’s theme is Managing Indian Media Libraries and Archives: Challenges, Opportunities and Best Practices The Association of Media Libraries and Archives (AMLA), a professional forum, was originally conceptualized by the Indian media library and information professionals, during the IFLA International Newspaper Conference which was held from February 25-28,2010 at IGNCA, New Delhi. As the AMLA is now fully functional, it seriously aims for regular exchange of professional ideas and knowledge sharing through conferences, seminars, workshops, training programmes and publications etc., by catering to the development needs of professionals working in various Media Libraries and Archives in India, which is the first such initiative, in the mass media industry in the Country. As the first step towards achieving one of its main goals, ‘regular exchange of professional ideas and knowledge sharing’, AMLA has now decided to host an all India annual conference to discuss the current issues and various emerging trends in managing media libraries and archives in India. AMLANC-2013 is the first national level conference to be held in India under AMLA from February 4-5, 2013 and it will bring together the LIS and Archival Management Professionals working in the media libraries as well as some of the select group of prominent users of media libraries under one roof. Seminar [Batch:2011-13] The Multimedia Semantic Web Abstract The evolution of libraries from clay-tablets to consortia has witnessed the evolution of knowledge preservation on papyrus leaves to books to e-Books and audio books and even audio-visual contents. Thus preservation of knowledge for posterity not only depends on text based materials but also several other multimedia formats. Also the retrieval of such knowledge plays an important role, since storage is not our only purpose, dissemination is equally important as preservation to the information seeker. The near future is not only text based but also will be containing information in various multimedia formats, especially in the graphical/ image format (what I believe). Thus, I am focussing mainly on the multimedia data (especially images) as well as textual data for the future semantic web in this seminar. In my seminar, I intend to elaborate the various processes involved in the information retrieval process from images to text and vice-versa. I will also elaborate the underlying processes and principle involved in the retrieval of such data. I have discussed the CBIR (Content Based Information Retrieval), how it works, how it can be implemented in our library and information science field, its working methodology, etc. also the need of taping the Latent Semantics so that the information retrieval is meaningful and is with the least noise to avoid redundancy. The implementation of SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) has also been discussed. Moreover I have incorporated some conceptual hypotheses on which I want to work in future and extend my research, to what I think is plausible as of now. Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) invites nominations from LIS teachers / professionals / researchers for the following three awards for the year 2012: 1. IATLIS – Motiwale Best LIS Teacher Award; 2. IATLIS – Prof. S.P. Narang Research Promotion Award; 3. IATLIS – Prof. Jagindar Singh Ramdev Lifetime Achievement Award Executive Council Members of IATLIS are not eligible to be nominated for these awards. *Eligibility for IATLIS – Motiwale Best LIS Teacher Award: * The nominee should have at least 10 years of teaching experience at the post-graduate level or 10 years professional experience at a senior level, and should be in service. A person can receive the award only once and one person can nominate only one LIS teacher / professional at a time. Nominations on plain paper should be accompanied by bio-data, list of publications, details of professional activities, and contribution to IATLIS activities. *Eligibility for IATLIS – Prof. S. P. Narang Research Promotion Award: * For this year’s award, nominations only of students registered for Ph.D. in a recognized university would be considered. The nominee should not be a full-time employee.
