Workshop for enhancing Professional competency of School Librarians in the Digital Era

*Date:* June 29-30, 2011 *Venue:* MG University Library School Libraries are the heart of the educational system. They play a pivotal role in nurturing knowledge and improving the quality of education. They not only help to inculcate the habit of reading but also a thirst for new knowledge. The advent of ICT has opened the doors of possibilities. Now the role of School Libraries has changed from mere information transfer to content generation. The School Libraries are becoming Information Clearing Houses and as such they will constantly change and adjust their role as catalysts in the Information Society. *Topics Covered * - School library Management skills - The internet - Organisation of School Libraries - Psychological approach of reading - Library Automation *Digital Sources of Information * Reading is usually associated with print materials which still commands significance, but many of the same materials can be read online through the internet. Digital resources comprise mainly E-journals, E-books, Online databases, Blogs, etc. The Internet, the medium that allows to access the information playground that is the World Wide Web, has provided a whole new medium for information exchange. Initiatives such as free softwares and open source initiatives have boosted the free use and availability of information. Digital Libraries are also gaining importance and enriching the world of information. The workshop aims to impart library organisation, management skills and awareness of the digital information sources. *General Information * Target Audience -School Librarians and Teachers in charge of libraries Registration Fee : Rs.500/- (including working lunch and tea) Maximum participants : 30 Admission: First come first serve The programme is being conducted as part of library extension services. UGC NET &JRF Results-What happened to LIS Professionals?

Dear Professional Friends *Result of UGC NET/JRF held on 26th Dec 2010 has been declared. ***<http://www.ugcnetonline.in/> ** It is learned that the number of LIS Professionals who have qualified the UGC NET & JRF Exams are very less, only 06 out of about 13,000 appeared!!! It was also heard that only one candidate qualified from the state of Kerala !!! The statistics shows that 06 (out of 9689) are cleared NET and NOBODY has qualified for the JRF (out of 3238). Even though the situation of other subjects are not known now, discuss and introspect the bad results of LIS and the role of LIS Schools ( in this 100th years of LIS Education in our country!) It is interesting note that, last year 06 Students from the DLIS, University of Kerala have qualified NET & JRF. Use the medium of various Discussion Forums to introspect. Regards *Dr. K. G. About UGC -NET LIS result 2010

Dear colleagues Its happy to inform you that i cleared UGC-NET of DECEMBER 2010.I came to know that there are only very few in India who could able to clear it. It’s a real surprise for me because the exam was not so hard.Then,how this low victory statistics occurred? I don't think quality of the candidates was poor. This is an injustice to whole Library Science professional and student community. Last time there was such an instance in Kerala in case of NET qualifiers in ENGLISH Literature.Only one person cleared it.There was widespread resentment and talks on that matter in academic and professional bodies.Media took up the matter and channel discussions were aired.May be because of that, this time there are more than 40 successful candidates for English from Kerala. So,i think library professional bodies should take it serious to intervene in the said matter. I request professional bodies to send submissions about this matter to UGC authority.
