>From IFLA's webpage: http://www.ifla.org/en/news/ifla-open-access-taskforce-established 11 October 2011 IFLA Open Access Taskforce established By Lars Bjørnshauge Following the endorsement of IFLA's Statement on Open Access by the Governing Board, April 18th 2011and the subsequent approval from the Governing Board during the WLIC in Puerto Rico August 2011 of a number of key initiativesIFLA's Open Access Taskforce has been established. The taskforce will work on the following issues: Advocate for the adoption and promotion of open access policies as set out in IFLA's Statement on Open Access within the framework of the United Nations institutions (UN, UNESCO, WHO, FAO); Build Capacity within the IFLA Membership to advocate for the adoption of open access policies at the national level, through the development of case studies and best practices for open access promotion; Furthermore the taskforce will connect to the various organizations working for Open Access as indicated in the statement -such as SPARC (US/Europe/Japan), COAR, OASPA,EIFL, Bioline International & DOAJ, among others. First things to be done is to produce a road map for the work to presented for the IFLA Governing Board in December and as well to begin collecting case studies and best practice related to how national library associations can promote national policies and programs to further foster the progress of Open Access. Please inform me if you have good examples in relation to this. In cooperation with the IFLA Headquarters dedicated web pages will be created in order for the community to be able to follow and contribute to the work. Dear professional friends, One of the best tributes to Steve Jobs was paid a few days before he died.A report by Appsfire said the number of Android and iOS apps crossed one million in September.Here is an app Industry in high gear ,accelerating and transforming how people use IT.It has a lot to thank Jobs for. It may be unwarranted to compare Jobs to Einstein or newton.But there is no doubting that he could see possibilities not visible to normal human eye.He put his talent to good use in App Store,which encouraged independent developers to build applications for the growing base of iPhone users. Jobs pitched his products as elements in an eco system.He worked tirelessly with music labels to create iTunes to provide downloadable music to iPods.iPhones came with an App Store,where you could download apps to run your life. The idea was a run away hit and within two months of the launch in July 2008 ,100 million apps had been downloaded.It set a trend as the competition realised they could not sell phones without apps.The effect of App Store as we realise now has been more farreaching than just selling mobile phones. Programmers work to meet real -life human needs.But it is tricky to figure out what people want and Jobs famously maintained that people do not know what they need.Many companies start with a unique insight into people's needs and develop a successful product.But as they grow big they tend to move away from consumers.IT companies also need to target opportunities of a certain size that can support a viable scale of operations.App Store forced a paradigm shift in IT. It created niche markerts for small developers,through it is debatable how much money they have made on apps.But here was a platform to pander to all kinds of pressing or whimsical needs of the consumers. You name any biological or cultural fact of life - from sex to satellites - there is an app to do something about that. People also got used to idea of building key activities of their life around apps. It also sparked off a virtuous cycle- apps driving smart phone sales,which in turn lead to more consumption of apps - to transform mobiles and tablets into primary computing devices. Final Call for Papers for XXVIII National Conference of IATLIS, 26-28 November 2011 at Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. Theme: LIS Education, Research and Training (LISERT): Vision 2020 Many issues and concerns have evolved during last few years in a rapidly changing scenario of LIS Education, Research and training (LISERT). Library Education is now more than100 years old in India, and it is time to take stock of the present situation to develop a vision for the near future. In order to discuss these issues and concerns, IATLIS has decided to organize the XVIII IATLIS National Conference on the theme ‘LIS Education, Research and Training: Vision 2020’. In the centenary year of the LIS education in India, this conference would be organized jointly by the Department of Library and Information Science, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and the Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) from 26-28 November 2011. Sub-themes: These sub-themes are not exhaustive, rather indicative only. Critical analysis of 100 years of Library education in India to develop a sustainable vision for future. New dimensions of LIS Education in the next decade(s), proliferation of new departments/courses versus strengthening of existing ones. LIS education and job-market: relevance and consistency: with a focus on UGC norms, Curriculum, teaching methods, evaluation and examination systems Role and status of LIS departments in Universities and Institutions of Higher Education and Research Faculty and infrastructural requirements with special reference to learning resources in Indian languages. Student-centered learning, space and support infrastructure (learning resources) Restructuring of LIS programmes with special emphasis on choice-based credit system Accreditation and quality assurance in LIS courses with special emphasis on Open and Distance Learning. LIS Research and publication: expanding horizons. Continuous Professional Education and Training Impact of ICTs on LIS Education and Research, and integration of Information Literacy and other upcoming subjects Partnership and collaboration in LIS education, research and training, Multidisciplinary and specialty courses for the corporate information environment. Alumni networking and support Full articles and research papers (with abstracts) on the above sub-themes and other topics related to the main theme are invited to reach the IATLIS headquarters as a hard copy and also as an email attachment latest by 17 October 2011 at the address given below this message. References at the end of the paper and their in-text citing should be according to APA Style manual. Abstracts only won’t be considered until the full paper is received. Authors should also send a demand draft of Rs. 500/- in the name of Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS), payable at Patiala along with the full paper.
