Dear Professionals, Congratulations to all those responsible for "Walk to the book, March to the library" event. Kodos to KALA and others who have jointly organised the event. They have, in my opinion, payed a befitting tribute this year to Dr. S.R. Ranganathan in innovative way. The even has inspired not only those who participated but also those who have seen the reports in TV or newspapers. The slogan itself is meaningful, inspiring and attractive. These kinds of movements play an important role to spread the cause of libraries in India. In my opinion the event is an eye opener for many who are wary about libraries. It is to the credit of the organizers who have managed to bring to the occasion people from different walks of life including the first citizen of Karnataka - Sri. H. Bharadwaj, the honorable Vice-Chancellor of University of Mysore Prof. V.G. Talawar; and other literary giants, academicians, information professionals, politicians, students and public. ‘Walk to the book…’ movement should not stop here. Other associations in various cities of India can emulate similar kinds of public awareness programmes about libraries. Many of the current activities of the associations are rather elite in nature and probably not reaching the public at large. I think, in addition to what they are doing, these kinds of events increase the utility of libraries. -- N.S. Inauguration of West Bengal Public Library Network Portal

Dear moderator, Please post the information as stated below : On the eve of the Librarian's Day on 12th August, 2010, *West Bengal Public Library Network Portal *has been inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister in Charge Dr. Debesh Das, Department of Information Technology and Biotechnology, Government of West Bengal at State Central Library, West Bengal. Dr. Soumendra Nath Bera, Hon'ble Minister of State, Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal was the Chief Guest. Hon'ble Minister of State, Mass Education Extension & Library Services, Government of West Bengal presided over the function. The function was organized by the Directorate of Library Services and State Central Library, West Bengal in association with Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation. A seminar was also organized to mark the Birth Day of S R Ranganathan. The theme of the seminar was "Dissemination of Information through Public Libraries". The guest speakers of the Seminar were Prof. Amitabha Chatterjee, Shri Ramkrishna Saha and Dr. Partha Sarathi Mukhopadhyay. Dear Friends I thank all the Librarian fraternity of Bangalore for having supported the cause of *“Walk to the book – March to the Library”. *I was overwhelmed by the support extended by all of you specially the younger Librarian friends made this event a grand success. This gives us a message that, we the professional Associations are lacking in organizing and using the young librarians for the professional activities. I along with my other sister Association office bearers shall take this message seriously and start working jointly for the common cause of the profession. In the next years to come we shall make it as a festival of Librarians and create and awareness among the public at large. I thank all those (Professional Associations’ office bearers) who worked meticulously and were responsible for the success of this march. I request all the Librarian friends to come forward and enroll your membership to *KARNATAKA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (KALA) *and attend the general body meeting of the KALA in a big number. Sirkazhi Public library to be named after SR Ranganthan PTI Nagapattinam (TN), Aug 12 (PTI) The public library in Sirkazhi in the district would get a new building at a cost of Rs 20 lakh and named after S R Ranganathan, a native of the town who is regarded as Father of library science in India. Stating this at Librarians' Day celebrations here, District Collector C Munianathan today said through his innovative research on library science, S R Ranganathan attained world fame and was regarded as the greatest librarian of the 20th century. "He is a pioneer in library movement and is the proponent of the famous 'five laws of library science', he said adding that Ranganathan was a genius mathematician as well. Ranganathan was born at Ubayavedantam village near Sirkazhi and his birthday is observed as Librarians' Day in all the libraries in the district, he said. Stating that there were 98 public libraries in the district, the Collector said a total of 8.24 lakh people have utilised the library services last year.
