Dear all, INFLIBNET has launched N-List programme, the details are hereunder. About NLIST *Background * The Project entitled "National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)", being jointly executed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre and the INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi provides for i) cross-subscription to e-resources subscribed by the two Consortia, i.e. subscription to INDEST-AICTE resources for universities and UGCINFONET resources for technical institutions; and ii) access to selected e-resources to colleges. The N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the INFLIBNET Centre. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher's website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre. *N-LIST: Four Components* The project has four distinct components, i.e. i ) to subscribe and provide access to selected UGC-INFONET e-resources to technical institutions (IITs, IISc, IISERs and NITs) and monitor its usage; ii) to subscribe and provide access to selected INDEST e-resources to selected universities and monitor its usage; iii) to subscribe and provide access to selected e-resources to 6,000 Govt./ Govt.-aided colleges and monitor its usage; and iv) to act as a Monitoring Agency for colleges and evaluate, promote, impart training and monitor all activities involved in the process of providing effective and efficient access to e-resources to colleges. The INDEST and UGC-INFONET are jointly responsible for activity listed at i) and ii) above. The INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad is responsible for activities listed at iii) and iv) above. The INFLIBNET Centre is also responsible for developing and deploying appropriate software tools and techniques for authenticating authorized users. *Current Status* As on March 15, 2010, a total number of 1,118 colleges have registered themselves with the N-LIST programme including 668 Govt. / Govt.-aided colleges covered under the 12 B Act of the UGC. Log-in ID and password for accessing e-resources has been sent to the authorized users from these 668 colleges. Remaining colleges are being advised to join the initiative as N-LIST Associates. All e-resources subscribed for colleges under the N-LIST Project are now accessible to these 668 colleges through the N-List website. Digitization is not a Long-Term Solution

Dear Friends This is a very important discussion. Mindless digitisation of old records may not be helpful in every situation or in all organisations. It would be a disaster if we don't preserve the original. The situation which we are facing right now in our organisation is exactly the issue raised in this discussion. Our records of 60 years are in Microfilm, but film is slowly deteriorating, Reader/ printers are not manufactured any more, Consumables for reader/ printers are not available, Good service providers are not forthcoming. we are fully aware of the disasters of digitisation as we are not in position to convert the back up tapes created in 2003. Experience of some institutions who lost their original documents in the process of digitisation and their digital copies are not readable have come to our knowledge.If digitised,every change in Hardware or software requires the updating of the whole record. Dear All, It’s our pleasure to inform you that, Birla Institute of Technology is conducting national workshop on *“KOHA: Open Source Software for Library Automation” On 4-5 June, 2010.* The workshop will cover installation of KOHA on Windows or Linux operating system, Introduction to Windows or Linux Operating System, customization and configuration of KOHA software, demonstration of all modules like Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Serial Control, Circulation & OPAC, Introduction to MARC 21, multilingual support in KOHA, MARC records, import feature in KOHA etc. Target Audience The Koha workshop is of great use to the library professionals and Professor I/C of academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries, government departmental libraries, institutional libraries, etc that are interested in library automation. Delivering the key-note address, Shri. Jahagirdar, Librarian, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) focussed on the positive steps that could ensure access to library and learning resources at an affordable cost. Efficiency and quality in provision of library services for teaching, learning and research is the corner stone for the survival and success of libraries, he said, and explained the quality indicators of Library and Information System and the grading system of NAAC. S. Srinivasaraghavan, Librarian, Bharathidasan University, explained the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) parameters for engineering colleges while M. Durairajan, Librarian, St. Joseph's College, spoke on ‘Best Practices in Library and Information Sciences.' Inaugurating the workshop, Dr.P.V. Konnur, University Librarian, Bangalore University, emphasised the need for enhancement of the quality of services to attract users and optimise the use of library resources. Presiding over, the Principal K. Anbarasu spoke of the dynamic transformation of libraries.
