Dr. Kamalavijayan : Condolences

Dear professionals, This is to inform the sad demise of Dr. Kamalavijayan, Former General Manager and Chief Librarian of Reserve Bank of India. He expired in 17thAugust 18, 2009 at Mumbai. A great loss of a dedicated man in our profession. May his soul rest in peace on eternity. *A brief account of his life:* Dr. Kamalavijayan, in a career spanning over 30 years, has served as Information Manager in various bodies including Kerala University, International Crops Research Institute for Semin Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR). Since 1993, he has held the post of General Manager and Chief Librarian of the Reserve Bank of India, and has also worked as World Bank Consultant in the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. His prolific career includes stints as Vice President of Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC) since 2002; Director of the 23rd All India Conference on ‘Content Management in India in Digital Environment’ held at Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram in December 2001. He also chaired the International Conference on Information Management in a Knowledge Society (ICIM 2005) held at Mumbai to mark the Golden Jubilee of IASLIC. An author of ten books and several articles, Dr. Kamalavijayan has also edited the Library and Information Science Journal, ALIS Bulletin from 1977 to 1987. Posted by: Saji S. Dear Professionals, The sad news of demise of Dr. Kamalavijayan, Former General Manager and Chief Librarian of Reserve Bank of India,really shocked me. He was an enterprising librarian with dedication, leadership and courage. Such qualities will always encourage others while planning any LIS activities. His demise is a great loss to us. Open universities

Dear Friends Open/distance education has opened the avenues for the people those who are denied opportunities by conventional system. Hence it is very sad decision by U.G.C.barring open universities to conduct the research programmes. In fact research programmes are self study course and hence there is no need to bring them in regular stream. Even in conventional system the people doing research work(Ph.D.) are mostly involved with the self study process with their supervisor. It is nothing but the open /Distance education. Present age is the web based and everything is becoming open throughout the world and same is the case with open education .The world is promoting open education through the open universitie. and here in india we are barring the open universities. Instead of doing this please rectify the faulty systems to avoid the monopoly of conventional education where doing Ph.D. is a deram for the common people. U.G.C. should reconsider its decision.This is with reference do Dr, G. Sarojas's posting. Simplified installation manual for PMB and OpenBiblio

Dear Friends, PMB and OpenBiblio are two open source library management systems suitable for installation in Windows. Both ILS are written using PHP programming language, therefore installation and maintenance is easy. I put forward installation manual of PMB and OpenBiblio with the hope that you get a chance to try two popular open source ILS. Call for Papers:: ICTs and Development: An International Workshop for Theory, Practice, & Policy 11-12 March 2010 Organized by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi Sponsored by International Development Research Centre, Canada Call for Papers Unpublished, original empirical papers are invited for the forthcoming international workshop on ICTs and Development: An International Workshop for Theory, Practice, & Policy to be conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, India, during 11-12 March 2010. The workshop aims to provide a forum for scholars to share their empirical research with academic experts, policymakers, and activists from the regional and international development community. Papers should examine how mobile phones, computers, and the Internet influence the empowerment of marginal individuals and communities, including whether ICTs create and enhance livelihood opportunities for people in the developing world. Papers should be in the range of 5,000-8,000 words (including abstract and bibliography) and should include a clear discussion of the implications of the findings for development policy and/or practice. No more than twelve papers will be selected by the workshop organizers for presentation. The first author of each paper chosen will be given air fare and lodging/meals. The workshop is part of the project, ICTs and Urban Micro Enterprises: Identifying and Maximizing Opportunities for Economic Development, and is supported by the International Development Research Centre, Canada.
