Can eBooks Satisfy? How can educational systems, and the stakeholders that support them, adapt existing and new content onto these devices? Will this adaptation be able to challenge the existing income streams and vested interests of current content production & dissemination models? And should this content focus on ebooks and other electronic media the replicates existing content, or is this an opportunity to change the way in which content is created, teacher's educate, and students learn? During the Human Development Network webinar, "eBooks & Affordable Access to Digital Content for Teachers, Health Care Workers & Agricultural Extension Agents in Southern Africa", which looked at lessons from the IADP Affordable Access Initiative Partnership with African Universities, a sidebar conversation came about on the instant message board that was associated with the webinar. ICTs in Education Prize: Call for nominations 10-08-2009 (Paris) Teaching, Learning and e-Pedagogy: Teacher Professional Development for Knowledge Societies is the theme of the 2009 UNESCO-King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education. Funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the US$50,000 prize is divided between two winners. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2009. Every year, this prize rewards activities that demonstrate best practice as well as creative use of ICTs to enhance learning, teaching and overall educational performance. Submissions for candidature must reach UNESCO via the governments of Member States, in consultation with their UNESCO National Commissions, or by international non-governmental organizations which maintain formal relations with the Organization. Winners will be celebrated at an award ceremony on 26 January 2010 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The 2008 Prize was awarded to China's Shanghai TV University (for its project 'Turning the Digital Divide into Digital Opportunity') and to Dr Hoda Baraka, of the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (for her leadership in the implementation of several national ICT projects in education). MyDLIS Training Workshop on CMS

The Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore (UGC-SAP Department) is organising a three-day training workshop on 'Content Management Systems'(CMS) during 27th to 29th August 2009. The workshop is intended to provide knowledge and practical skills in CMS. Emphasis will be on providing hands-on experience on Joomla! Experienced resource persons from reputed institutions and universities would engage the sessions. The workshop is open for working librarians, teachers and other information professionals interested in content management. With an intent to make the sessions effective, it has been decided to restrict the number of participants to 20 only. Early birds will be given the preference. The last date for registering is 20th August 2009. There is no registration fee. Food and beverages during the sessions will be arranged by the organisers. The participants have to make their own arrangements for travel and stay at Mysore. The organisers, however, would be pleased to help in arranging the accommodation at different guest houses/hotels only on specific request in advance from the participants. [http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/no-phd-mphil-at-open-universiti…] It had announced three years ago that these degrees would be considered as an option to NET or SET In a setback to the country’s 14 open universities, the University Grants Commission, or UGC, has barred them from conducting research programmes, namely PhD and MPhil. Pointing out the declining quality of research projects in a “distance learning” system, UGC has stopped registration for PhD and MPhil programmes at all the 14 open universities, including the India Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). This has sparked angry reactions from academics and students attached to open universities who believe the “declining quality of research” is a national concern and not confined to open universities. Three years back, UGC had announced that degrees like MPhil and PhD would be considered as an option to the National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET) for recruitment of full-time teachers at colleges. After this announcement, thousands of students registered for MPhil and PhD programmes at open universities. So it has come as a surprise that UGC has not only revoked this decision but also banned research projects at open universities.
