Shri N.V. Jagga Rao is no more

Dear All, We report with profound regret the passing away of Shri N.V. Jagga Rao, formerly Deputy Librarian, Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad (now renamed as English and Foreign Languages University) on June 4, 2009, 8.30 pm, Visakhapatnam. He joined the LIS profession in 1957 and served it till he breathed last. After retiring from the CIEFL, he moved over to Visakhapatnam and played a key role in the building up of a big, highly successful public library--a joint effort of local library enthusiasts, LIS teachers and LIS professionals--in Visakhapatnam. At the time of his death, he was serving as librarian of a local engineering college in Visakhapatnam. Throughout his professional career spanning over five decades, Shri Jagga Rao maintained highest standards professional integrity serving variety of libraries such as the Central Institute of Leather Research, Chennai, the American Studies Research Centre, Hyderabad, and the British Library, Hyderabad. He abhored the practice of sponsorship of library seminars/conferences by library suppliers, and wrote a highly critical article several years ago in University News (a publication of the Association of Indian Universities) on this issue. After reading this piece, Shri Tejeshwar Singh (Managind Director of Sage Publications, & TV news reader) wrote a letter to Mr. Jagga Rao appreciating the latter's views. Shri Jagga Rao loved travel a lot and he used to enjoy sharing his experiences with his colleagues and friends. He was kind, considerate and always helpful towards his colleagues. With the passing away of Shri Jagga Rao, the Indian LIS profession has lost another great personality who dedicated his entire life serving the reading community with distinction and integrity. WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT NCSI-IDRC Workshop on Library Automation Packages and Digital Library Software: July 27th to 31st and August 3rd to 7th, 2009 (http://dharmaganja.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/workshop ) Two workshops of one week duration each on Library Automation Packages (LAP) and its integration with Digital Library Software is organised at National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore from July 27th to 31st and August 3rd to 7th. Topics covered include installation, Staff-Client and OPAC modules of a few LAP and its integration with Digital Library Software on Linux (Ubuntu) platform. The workshop is organised as part of a project on ILAP carried out at NCSI, funded by The International Development Research Centre (IDRC), a Crown Corporation and an agency of the Government of Canada. One of the objectives of the project is to test the available technological tools for the development of union catalogue and to train manpower to implement union catalogue at their respective institutions/libraries. To fulfill this objective a series of workshop is organised. First workshop was organised from 5th to 9th January, 2009 and this is second and third workshop in the series. Workshop on KOHA Library Management Software at NCRA, Pune from 13th-15th July 2009

Dear all, NCRA Pune is organising a workshop on KOHA an open source library management software from 13th July to 15th July 2009. The workshop will cover installation of KOHA on linux operating system, Introduction to Linux Operating System, customization and configuration of KOHA software, demonstration of all modules (Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Serial Control, Circulation & OPAC), Introduction to MARC 21, multilingual support in KOHA, MARC records, Import feature in KOHA etc. The registration fees for the workshop is Rs. 3000/- which includes workshop kit (software installables, installable of Operating System, Training Material), breakfast, tea and working lunch. Accomodation can be provided at NCRA guest house for the outstation candidates at an additional charges. The number of participants is expected to be 30 and the preference will be given to those candidates who have basic knowledge of handling computers. Dear Professional friends, The UGC is now a step closure to issue the fitment tables along with the UGC Notification on Measures for Maintenance of Sandards-2009. The Regional Consultative Committee of UGC held it's final meeting on 3rd June 2009 at Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi. It was attended, like in other regions, by the Vice Chancelors, Principals and Associations of Teachers, Librarians and Physical Education Personnel of the Northern Region. The Indian Academic Library Association(IALA) was represented by a delegation under the leadership of Dr.Abidi Deputy Librarian, Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi and IALA Vice President (north) along with Dr.Saleem Anwar Deputy Librarian University of Delhi and other professional Librarians of Delhi region. IALA had prepares a descriptive representation including the claims for modifications to be made for achieving total parity with teachers in the HRD Orders. The Chairman RCC appreciated the efforts made by IALA in all the regional meetings also. IALA has also claimed for including the Information Scientists post par with Assistant Librarian Posts and to include in the same seniority for promotions and other benefits. The committee was quite sympathetic to the demands and agreed to recommend as many suggestions as were under the ambit of the directives of MHRD and stated that other demands will also be included as its suggestions separately. Koha & English to Indic Transliteration

All, A easy to use tool to "transliterate" from English to Indic languages is available with koha. One can type in English and convert the words and phrases into five Indian languages: Hindi Kannada Tamil Malyalam Telegu This makes finding records cataloged in Indian languages easier. You can view this feature at the Delhi Public Library website: http://delhipubliclibrary.in/ To turn on the feature, press "ctrl+g". Type a word in english and press space to transliterate. Select the destination language from the drop down list. Respected Sir, I want to know that in a year how many books we can withdraw ? What is the ratio of it ? If such books is damaged, what is the policy of it ? If such books is stolen from library, what is the procedure ? We are taking 3 time more amount of original price of books in case of lost books by the students , is it right way ? Which matter is easy for taking stock ? I want to know the government policy of India regarding this matter. Also send your suggestions and guidelines. Please reply.
