Dear Library professionals : We at the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) Library are in need of 2 'Library Trainees' . Candidates selected from the 'Walk-In-Interviews' to be held on the 24th of July 2008 will get a chance to gain experience in all aspects of the library functioning, including, acquisitions, cataloging, serials control, circulation, inter-library loan, handling user queries, searching bibliographic databases, coordinating with our other centers, digitization and long-term access of creating and maintaining digital materials, using basic HTML, etc. Please go through the complete details below, as well as the attachment and join us on the 24th of July 2008. The Institute is a successor to the Colaba Observatory which was set up in 1823 by East India Company, and where the first magnetic observations were started in 1841. It became an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science & Technology in 1971, and was named as the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism. Apart from basic and applied research, the Institute operates 10 modern magnetic observatories spread across the country and has two research centres at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and Allahabad , U.P. The Institute library has a comprehensive collection of more than 20,000 books and bound journal volumes in geomagnetism and its allied fields. Other formats like maps, reprints, reports and non book material are also available to the users. The library is automated and all the library operations are done using the SLIM21 software. Library facilities are also made available to our observatory staff and the two research centres. The selected candidate will get hands on experience of working in different sections of the library and will have opportunity of working in a library with modern facilities. JOB TITLE : Trainee Librarian NUMBER OF POSTS : Two QUALIFICATION : The interested candidate should have a post graduate degree in Library & Information Science (MLISc) from a recognized university with good academic record. Candidates with a Science degree and basic computer knowledge will get preference. PERIOD OF SELECTION : The candidates will be initially selected for a period of 6 months, that may be extended as per the requirements of the Institute. AGE GROUP : Preferably 25-28 years SALARY : Rs.7000/- per month. My request to one and all is that we should be ambitious to achieve pinnacle of professional competencies. National Conference on Library 2.0: The Confluence of Web 2.0 and the Library Paradigm (MyLib 2.0) August 21 – 22, 2008, Mysore (A UGC-SAP- Programme) Organised by: Department of Library and Information Science University of Mysore, Mysore Conference Theme The profession of librarianship and the field of library and information sciences have been in a constant state of flux. Libraries – the millennia old institutions have been reinventing themselves in different ways with the onset of new technologies and paradigms. The latest buzz phrase in the technology front is "Web 2.0". Leveraging the approaches typified by Web 2.0's principles and technology offers library profession many opportunities to transform libraries from venerated age-old institutions to agile ones. The term Library 2.0 has been adopted by a growing group of libraries, librarians and information professionals to recalibrate the processes and the paradigms of the library and information services. This new model of library is all about amalgamation of – Ajaz, Apollo, Web Standards, User Centric Design, RSS, Blogs, Wikis, Mashups, Tagging, Folksonomies and so on into library and information services. Library 2.0 is not just a technology or a thing but a new paradigm and a state of mind. The heart of Library 2.0 is user-centred change. It is a model that encourages constant and purposeful change, inviting user participation. The Conference will be a forum for discussing the emerging processes, technologies and paradigms of the library profession in the backdrop of the new technology of Web 2.0 and efforts to integrate the same into the library services. This two-day seminar will ponder over the issues related to Web 2.0 technologies and highlight the initiatives and case studies towards deploying them for making libraries contemporary and user centred. Objectives of the conference This two-day conference is to present the current thinking and practices, encourage academic and industrial interaction in the areas related to Library 2.0 involving librarians, library science educators, researchers, information professionals, and students from all over India.
