Sen About the Book Sen B K (2008). DDC Readymade: A treasury to 15,000 readymade DDC class numbers relating to Indian subjects, English language and literature. New Delhi: Ess Ess Publications, 2008. 766p. Rs. 1675.00 The book provides around 15,000 readymade class numbers relating to Indian subjects and English language and literature. It has covered four Indic religions, namely Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. For each of these religions class numbers have been provided for more than two hundred subdivisions. The class numbers for around fifty subdivisions of each of the important South Asian languages like Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Sinhalese, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu have been provided. The numbers for other South Asian languages noticed in DDC have also been included. For literature of each of the aforementioned languages the class numbers for around 450 subdivisions have been provided. Around 750 class numbers have been provided for English language and literature. More than 250 class numbers have been provided under the heading History including all the periods of Indian history and the Indian states and union territories. Class numbers have also been provided for such subjects as Architecture, Conservation of resources, Cultural contact, Economic development, Economic geography, Elections, Elementary education, Fauna, Flora, Folk dancing, Folk literature, Food supply, General clubs, Geography, Geology, Higher education, Journalism, Local public debt, Local taxes, Museums, Newspapers, Organizations, Painting and paintings, Political situation, Postal organizations, Public administration, Public finance, Public policy on education, Revenue, Secondary education, Social problems/social welfare, Social welfare problems and services, State taxes, Statistics, Strikes, and so on with more than 40 geographical subdivisions. In addition to this, more than a dozen class numbers have been provided for all the Indian states and union territories. Established ownership of intellectual assets, arriving at acceptable frameworks for fair and equitable sharing of benefits for social goods and providing harmonized legal structures to encourage continuous follow of innovations are necessities to fuel a vibrant global economy. As technology becomes the key driver in the knowledge led universe and impact societal dynamics, intellectual property right take a center stage in the evaluation of techno-societies. Keeping in view the importance of intellectual property rights and their projection, we are going to publish next thematic issue on IPR. This special issue addresses the theme of whether intellectual property (IP) acts as help or as a hindrance to innovation and the commercialization of new knowledge. This is a timely topic and one that elicits much debate, since it is likely to have far-reaching implications. Aims/ objectives: The aims of this special issue are to provide a forum for the presentation of these and related issues in IPR, to describe the implications for innovation and the commercialization of new knowledge, and to provide policy guidelines for helping to resolve some of the contentious issues. We generally debate about the usage of Libraries in this Internet era. A survey in 1996 predicted that libraries will become less relevant in future but after 10 years it is proved wrong. Of the 53% of US adults who said they visited a library in 2007, the biggest users were young adults aged 18 to 30 in the tech-loving group known as Generation Y, the survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project said. "These findings turn our thinking about libraries upside down," said Leigh Estabrook, a professor emerita at the University of Illinois and co-author of a report on the survey results. "Internet use seems to create an information hunger and it is information-savvy young people who are most likely to visit libraries," she said. Internet users were more than twice as likely to patronise libraries as non-internet users, according to the survey. More than two-thirds of library visitors in all age groups said they used computers while at the library. Sixty-five per cent of them looked up information on the internet while 62% used computers to check into the library's resources. Public libraries now offer virtual homework help, special gaming software programs, and some librarians even have created characters in the Second Life virtual world, Estabrook said. Libraries also remain a community hub or gathering place in many neighbourhoods, she said. The survey showed 62% of Generation Y respondents said they visited a public library in the past year, with a steady decline in usage according to age. Some 57% of adults aged 43 to 52 said they visited a library in 2007, followed by 46% of adults aged 53 to 61; 42% of adults aged 62 to 71; and just 32% of adults over 72. "We were surprised by these findings, particularly in relation to Generation Y," said Lee Rainie, co-author of the study and director of the Pew project. In 1996 a survey by the Benton Foundation found young adults saw libraries becoming less relevant in the future. "Scroll forward 10 years and their younger brothers and sisters are now the most avid library users," Rainie said. The survey of 2,796 Americans was conducted by telephone from late June through early September and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. It was funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, an agency that offers federal support for US libraries and museums.
