Announcement of Concessional Registration to Academic Community. Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Bangalore hosts the International Conference on Semantic Web and Digital Libraries (ICSD 2007), February 21-23, 2007, Bangalore. http://drtc.isibang.ac.in/icsd We have an overwhelming request from academic community who expressed constraints on the part of academic institutions/universities/technical and degree colleges/LIS faculty to pay full registration of Rs.6000/- for ICSD 2007. Hence, we are pleased to offer 50% concession registration of Rs.3000/- For full-time students, the registration fee is Rs. 1500/- . The student's registration form should be certified by a faculty member. NOTE: Completed registration forms with registration fees should reach the undersigned by 17th February, 2007. We have very eminent speakers from all over the world including, W3C, JISC, EASTWeb, DINI, National Manuscripts Mission, as tutorial and thematic speakers. We especially felt technical colleges and university professionals and LIS faculty, should benefit from the expertise at the conference. LibraryFind is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). This first public release, version 0.7, has a number of advanced features, such as (but not limited to): * 2-click user workflow (one click to find, one click to get) * Integrated OpenURL resolver * 2-tiered caching system to improve search response time * Customizable user interface As this is a pre-1.0 release, there are still a number of features, functions, and efficiencies we plan to add to the software. Library, Documentation and Information Science Division of the Indian Statistical Institute and NASSDOC, ICSSR, New Delhi are jointly organizing a National Workshop on Developing Subject Portal for Resource Harvesting in Social and Allied Sciences. They have made a software for Maharashtra Legislative Council and the have been using it very successfully.I don't have Email Address of CDEC. Dear Sh. Rajiva, Thanks for the query, though it's a pretty complex one. We have now many open source softwares in vogue (Greenstone, EPrints and DSpace etc.) in addition to the WinISIS/GENISIS applications. Greenstone, DSpace and EPrints are later additions to cutting edge DL solutions. Each of these software bring along with them excellent feature sets and sometimes unique facilities to the user community. And they all have worldwide acceptance too. Greenstone (http://greenstone.org) is a general purpose digital library software, an initiative from the New Zealand digital library project, and the Dept. of Computer Science at the University of Waikato New Zealand. You can get most of the support for Greenstone from the above site as well as the South Asia Support site at http://greenstonesupport.iimk.ac.in. DSpace (http://www.dspace.org) is a collaborative effort of the MIT and the HP Labs, and EPrints (http://www.eprints.org) comes from the University of Southampton, UK. Both these are also digital library software applications with more focus on building open access Institutional Repositories. So, to answer your question as to which is the best software for a University Library, I will say all are, and the same time, depending on your objectives, requirements, applications, specifications etc. just to mention a few. You will be the best judge, or a team of professionals involving the librarians as well as IT professionals in your University could look at these softwares and then zero in on to one. I would also encourage you to read the article 'StoneD' appeared in DLib Magazine September 2005 (http://www.dlib.org) authored by the Chief Architects of both Greenstone and DSpace. 2007 Franklin Award nominees The Bioinformatics Organization has announced the nominees for the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award for Open Access in the Life Sciences. Eddy, group leader, Janelia Farm Research Campus, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Leesburg, Virginia; * Robert Gentleman, head, Program in Computational Biology, Division of Public Health Sciences, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington; * Don Gilbert, director, Genome Informatics Lab, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; and * Steven Salzberg, director, Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.
