"Libraries on the Agenda": an international seminar on library advocacy 13th March 2008 at Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi Max Mueller Bhavan (MMB) and the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) in collaboration with the French Embassy, British Council and Instituto Cervantes are pleased to announce a one day international seminar on Library Advocacy under the aegis of the President of The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA ), Dr. Claudia Lux. The Government of India is committed to the creation of a knowledge society by providing equitable, high quality cost effective access to information and knowledge resources and services to meet the informational, educational, recreational and cultural needs of the community through various national, institutional and public libraries. Hon'ble Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in his inaugural address for the National Knowledge Commission on 2nd August 2005, recognized public libraries as an extremely important element in the foundation of a knowledge economy. In order to reach the goal of creating a knowledge society, the establishment of the National Knowledge Commission has been a major step in this direction. The stage is set for radical transformation in the country's library sector and commendable work is already underway to ensure sustained development of libraries in the form of 10 recommendations given by the working group on libraries such as setting up of a National Commission on Libraries, creating a Central Library Fund, greater community participation in library management etc. To support the endeavours of the Government of India and to synergise the efforts made all over Europe towards library advocacy, MMB and NKC in collaboration with the French Embassy, British Council and Instituto Cervantes, call upon information professionals from all types of libraries to attend this one day international seminar on "Libraries on the Agenda", which is also the motto of the IFLA Presidency of Dr. Claudia Lux. Seminar Objectives: - To facilitate the understanding of how to mount an effective advocacy campaign/plan with clear goals and objectives; to use media effectively and to lobby with legislators and decision makers at the political/administrative level as well as stakeholders who shape the public opinion and control support for library services - To explore the ways and means for librarians to be more visible not only in their own organizations, but also in their community and state - To facilitate discussions on how to make libraries a partner in life long learning and relevant for every citizen of the country - Deliberations on implementation of the recommendations of the working group on libraries and to share the formula for success of the prospering library landscape in European countries The Seminar programme will include presentations by experts and policy makers from Europe and India, interactive sessions amongst the participants and a panel discussion in the evening. The Scopus Affiliation Identifier Phase 1 facilitates faster decision-making Amsterdam, The Netherlands December 13, 2007 - Scopus(r), the world's largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, today announced that a sought after literature research tool, the Scopus Affiliation Identifier Phase 1 will be launched in January. This new feature will speed up the search process by enabling users to find all the documents belonging to a specific organization. Doing so will save users valuable time which can be better invested in performing the actual research analysis. The Scopus Affiliation Identifier Phase 1 is a unique tool which automatically identifies and matches an organization with all its research output. Scopus is the first to offer its customers this organizational matching functionality across its entire database of over 15,000 peer reviewed journals. This will be welcome news for deans, faculty heads, researchers and funding bodies who understand just how difficult and time-consuming this task has been up to now. Using a combination of sophisticated algorithms and a comprehensive knowledge base, the Scopus Affiliation Identifier Phase 1 will quicken the rate at which data can be collated for research performance measurement at the institutional level. The feature automatically matches the multiple name variants attributed to an organization. This is extremely useful where several name variants of an organization may exist or may be recorded differently by publishing authors. One such an example is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where articles found in Scopus and published by authors belonging to this institute carry more than 1,700 name variants. Other reasons for these numbers of variations can be attributed to organizations changing their name, having similar names, or they may merge or separate. This can make it challenging to clearly identify a single organization's complete body of work. "Up until now we have had to employ personnel to carry out this mammoth task. It is both a slow and expensive process. The Scopus Affiliation Identifier Phase 1 produces the same results in significantly less time. This not only helps us to reduce the number of staff needed but also allows us to focus on research analysis rather than data collection and filtering activities." says David Clay is Deputy Head of Academic Liaison and Finance at the University of Liverpool. The Scopus Affiliation Identifier Phase 1 makes it easier for him to evaluate his own institution and others.
