Dr Khaiser Nikam Reader in LISc University of Mysore Mysore - 570 006 Email:khaiser.nikam@gmail.com Mulissa Friday talk -1 - Friday the 18/09/06 -30.30 to 6.00 PM The department of library science under the aegis of Mulissa Mysore University Library and Information Students Association, on every Friday after noon organizes a special lecture on different topics. This has been the practice for many decades now .The present academic years lecture series were inaugurated on last Friday the 18th September 06.The excerpts of the function are as follows: "University of Mysore, Department of Library and Information Science is one of the first departments to have been initiated during the erstwhile Mysore state in 1962 and started functioning in the year 1965 under the headship of Late Prof. P K Patil. And Dr S.R. Ranganathan, the father of Library Science, framed the BLISc syllabus for the department " said Dr Khaiser Nikam, faculty advisor, while speaking about the decades old MULISSA - students' forum,, at the inaugural function of the association. Prof. A R Seetha Ram, from Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE) and the Director of Paramahamsa Yoga Center, Bhogadi Mysore was the guest speaker. Prof Seeth Ram, while delivering the inaugural special Lecture on " Spiritual Education and Personality Development " recalled how he has been associated with MyDLIS & Library Science, as his brother in law late Sri .TKS Iyengar was the librarian at IISc,Bangalore , and his wife Dr.Gita Seetha Ram ,CFTRI library , is the alumnus of this department . Prof. Seetha Ram who was to give a talk for about 45 minutes went up to 1hr and 45 minutes ,with out the knowledge of the audiences . All the faculty members and the students immensely benefited from his talk, as the talk was followed by a " Yogic tips workshop". In his talk Dr Ram emphasized on the need for positive attitude, right perception and how yoga can be practiced for total growth of the personality of an individual. Dr.Mallinath Kumbar, Chairman of the deportment gave his presidential remarks at the end. Other faculty members Prof.R Shalini Urs, Dr,M .Chandrashekar and Dr N .S. Harinarayana were present. Ms Smitha, A.P, welcomed the gathering; Ms.Sajan C compeered and Naveen Kumar delivered Vote of thanks. Wikipedia. ..Wikipedia, started only five years ago, now has millions of articles in over one hundred languages, and has nearly singlehandedly introduced the world's intellectuals to the possibilities of enormous collaborative efforts. It is a project that shouldn't work, but does--who could have expected such a radically open project to produce anything of value? But, by giving intellectuals the world over an open platform on which to work together, a clear task, and a simple interface, Wikipedia has shown a global audience what enormous, distributed knowledge collaboration can achieve. The theme will be fruitful in understanding different technologies developed and adopted for digital libraries by many institutions or organization and to review their social, cultural implication as well The seminar will review different dimensions like planning, architectire, interoperability, scalability, metadata harvesting, digitization, social and cultural implications Preservation and multilingual implication, software imperatives, e-learning perspectives and case studies of digital libraries. GOVT PLANS 30 IIITS TO TACKLE MANPOWER CRUNCH

With a severe manpower crunch in the IT sector, the Government is proposing to set up about 30 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) over the next few years, which could involve an expenditure of around Rs 3,000 crore. The IIITs will not be allocated State-wise. Beyond DRIVER to EDRI EU project to widen access to European research information, September 13, 2006. The CORDIS announcement of the DRIVER project. (See DRIVER's own announcement on Monday.) Excerpt: A new EU-funded project will lay the foundations of a large-scale, pan-European public infrastructure for research information. Open-access to research information is vital for researchers. The long-term vision of the DRIVER (Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research) project is to create an knowledge infrastructure for European researchers, which could include any form of scientific resource, from reports, to research articles, to raw data to other media. A number of countries and institutions already have repositories and networks which bring together a wide range of research content. A good example of this is the DARE Network in the Netherlands. Launched in 2004, DARE networks the digital data collections of all Dutch universities, as well as several related institutions, and allows users to access the information, which is arranged consistently. To date, DARE provides access to more than 75,000 digital records. The organisation behind DARE, SURF (the Dutch higher education and research partnership organisation which networks services, information and communications technology), is a partner in the DRIVER project. In a similar way, the European Digital Repository Infrastructure will eventually be a virtual network of repositories from across Europe. Initially, the project will focus on linking 51 institutional repositories from the Netherlands, UK, Germany, France and Belgium. This early 'test-bed' version of the European Repository will offer users a number of services, such as search, data collection, profiling and recommendations.... Ultimately, the project partners hope their virtual repository will build up a critical mass of research materials which will represent a powerful demonstration of Europe's research output. ---- Why are countries in the South reluctant to embrace the culture of open access, even though they stand to benefit much more than the European countries? Is it because our scientists and schoalars are not aware of the tremendous benefits of OA or is it because our science leaders do not see the value of OA?
