How Web 2.0 technologies such as synchronous messaging and streaming
media, blogs, wikis, social networks, tagging, RSS feeds, and mashups
might intimate changes in how libraries provide access to their
collections and user support for that access.
The following article tries to explore it.

Cambridge University Press sees rise in journal Impact Factors
According to the Thomson ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR), the entire
Cambridge Journals list shows an average increase in Impact Factor of
15.1% from 2004 to 2005. To place this in context, the equivalent
changes in the aggregated Impact Factors of all the journals in the
subject categories in which Cambridge journals sit, amounted to an
average increase of only 6.9%. http://journals.cambridge.org
Cambridge University Press acquires CABI Journals:
Cambridge University Press and CABI are pleased to announce the

Cambridge Companions Online
The Cambridge Companions series is one of the most widely known and
successful series in the Cambridge University Press Humanities list. We
have digitised almost the complete collection amounting to over 200
titles and made them available online for the first time. Their main
areas are Literature, Philosophy, Religion and Classics and include more
than 2000 specially commissioned essays by the leading international
scholars in each field.http://www.cco.cambridge.org)
Historical Statistics of the United States (HSUS)
Cambridge University Press is delighted to announce the complete
digitisation of the 5 volumes of the Historical Statistics of the United
States (HSUS). Popularly known as "Hussuss," this huge body of
information is fully searchable and users can download their chosen data
and configure tables and graphs for use in their research. This is a new edition of a 5 volume print reference work last published by the U.S. Census bureau in 1975. The revision reflects 30 years of new
scholarship that has added material on American Indians, slavery,
poverty, race and ethnicity. http://hsus.cambridge.org/
Orlando :New Research Database on Women's writing
'Orlando' is the first scholarly history of British Women's writing and
is unique in its approach and coverage. It grew out of a project based
at University of Alberta and took over 10 years and about 100 people to
build, and in the process developed a specialised tagging base system.
It is a comprehensive electronic database of information relating to
women's writing in the British Isles, from earliest times to today, and
offers a wealth of biographical and critical information on more than
800 British women writers (including over 20,000 bibliographical
listings), together with helpful entries on literary and historical
events, male writers and non-British women writers.

Increasing demands for access to distributed information from a single
source requires that the distributed information systems are
interoperable.
Interoperability is the ability of multiple systems, with different
hardware and software platforms, data structures, and interfaces, to
exchange data with minimal loss of content and functionality
(http://www.niso.org/standards/resources/UnderstandingMetadata.pdf).
Interoperability facilitates in building federated systems, which serve as
discovery tools for the end-users. With respect to interoperability of
digital libraries (DL), the OAI-PMH (Open Access Initiative Protocol for
Metadata Harvesting) is becoming a de facto standard. Popular institutional
repository software like DSpace, GNU EPrints are OAI-compliant software.
Many of the institutions / organizations are already maintaining their
bibliographic data using software packages like CDS/ISIS (DOS and Windows
versions), Libsys or other SQL-based RDBMS. Also, the institutions /
organizations many not have the requisite wherewithal to set up and
maintain software packages like DSpace or GNU EPrints. Now, the question
is, if there is a need to make data contained in non-OAI-compliant systems
interoperable, how does one go about?
As part of the on-going DSIR funded project, 'Development of OAI-based
Institutional Repository Services in India' at the National Centre for
Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), we are
trying to address this issue. We would like to have some sample
bibliographic data, may be around 100 records or so, from different
software packages so that we can make use of such data for testing
purposes. Please contact us off the list if you wish to share your sample
data so that we can provide additional details for sending the sample
data.
Many thanks.
