Dear Professionals, President, Office Bearers and Members of Karnataka State Library Association mourn the sad demise of Prof. G. Bhattacharya, former Director of DRTC on 26 June 2006. All of us cherish his professional contributions as a well-known LIS teacher, researcher, guide and above all a good human being. His contributions especially in the area of indexing are well-known. He never used to enter the class without prior preparations inspite of his vast experience at DRTC. I recall the proud words of Late Prof. MR Kumbar referring GB very often as "My Ganesh". May the Almighty give the strength to his family members and professional colleagues to bear this irreparable loss. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace. Dear faculty members and researchers, Elsevier recently came up with the idea of sponsorship of articles by authors for 37 journals starting with 6 journals on nuclear physics. For the journals that offer this option, authors will have the choice of paying a fee to have their article available on ScienceDirect to non subscribers. Journals offering Sponsored Articles On May 24, 2006, six Elsevier nuclear physics journals started to state on their journal homepages that authors will have the option to make articles available to non-subscribers of ScienceDirect via Sponsored Articles. Similar statements will appear on thirty-one additional journals homepages in the next two months. How Sponsored Articles works In the selected 37 journals, authors have the option to make their articles available on ScienceDirect at no cost to any viewer. The author charge for article sponsorship is $3,000. Importantly, authors can only select this option after an article has been accepted. Authors can also choose not to exercise this option with the assurance that their article will continue to reach a wide audience of researchers through ScienceDirects large subscription base. Whom does the corporate librarian report to ?

Dear Colleagues, "Corporate Librarian" is now a well established role in our profession. Many of us playing this role, have been contributing greatly to respective organisations. However, there are few organisations where the role, responsibilities and reporting pattern of corporate librarian is still evolving.. Out of academic interest, I would like to know the reporting pattern of Corporate Librarians. Whom does the Corporate librarian report to ?? Is it the CEO ? . MD ? CIO ? CKO ? CTO, ? R&D head, Admin head ?, I will be grateful if those working in industrial / IT / corporate sectors could share this information. CET for Ph.D Degree

BANGALORE: Get set for another CET. This test is for PhD applicants! Tired of receiving inane dissertation papers and approving them simply because a candidate would have put in five or six years, and also faced with the dilemma of approving thousands of applicants for PhD, all state universities have decided to conduct an entrance test to screen applicants. The move which will come into effect this academic year will, however, be university-specific. A candidate has to make a presentation about his project to a doctoral panel once in three months. At its last meeting, the BU academic council meeting suggested that candidates be assessed on their performance in two papers of the CET.A merit list will be prepared by allotting 50% marks for entrance test and 50% for PG marks. The CET format has been left to the discretion of each university. "This has been done since the generic aptitude and exposure of candidates vary in different parts of the state," university sources said. Candidates, who have passed examinations like NET/SLET/GATE/JRF or M Phil or belonging to FIP/QIP programmes, are exempted from the CET. Also, candidates selected to work under specialised-funded projects and government-sponsored foreign students can directly register for a PhD programme. It is also mandatory that before applying for a PhD, a candidate has to have had at least two articles published in a recognised journal. The move has evoked mixed reactions from vice-chancellors. "We used to conduct a CET a few years back, but there was not a single failure. So the test was redundant," said Mysore V-C Shashidhar Prasad. Mangalore V-C K M Cauveryappa feels it is not possible to judge the ability of a candidate of study by a generic test. "Instead, it will be better if the guide interviews the candidate," he said. However, universities cannot escape the CET as it is an Inter-University Board decision. BU has suggested that candidates be tested on general aptitude and on techniques of research methodology. "The aim of the CET should be to assess the aptitude of the candidate towards research and not just his knowledge," said former BU VC M S Thimmappa. An "emotionally aware" computer being developed by British and US scientists will be able to estimate an individual's thoughts by analysing a combination of facial movements that represent underlying feelings. Applications of the computer could range from improving people's driving skills to helping companies tailor advertising to people's moods. It could also be useful for online teaching ? to show whether someone understands what is being explained and in improving road safety by determining if a driver was confused, bored or tired. Seeking information about Indian Journal in fulltext databases

Hello: Indianjournals.com and NITIE are co hosting a seminar on E Journals and the Global promotion of Indian Journals on 1st July 2006 in NITIE Mumbai. Those who are keen to attend may get in touch with me. It is planned to be a one day seminar. While trying to collect information about the total number of journals published in India and the total number hosted on any foreign fulltext database I have come accross only two Journals Finance India and The IIMB Management Review Journal. I would like to know how many other indian journals are published and how many hosted other than the above. Kindly let me know at the earliest. Any help will be highly appreciated.
