It is also concerned with newer forms of publishing rights, these rights now include terms like -- copyright, copyleft, creative commons licensing models, et al. Open Access in www terms is indicative of faster, cheaper, and maybe free access to current content -- both in peer reviewed and otherewise domains. ************************************************************************************ Vis-a-vis Open Source ---- Google Search::<define: "open source"> ************************************************************************************ Open Source is also another movement, but on that has largely been relegated to the IT software domain. In this, people generate software for the common good. The software is released into the market and is generally improved upon by other programmers, resulting in faster, better, and usually free products. The credit-line is always maintained - of the producers. These warez cannot be sold commercially. One well known OS site is SourceForge.net Shareware / Freeware eg: tucows.com, are other ways of sharing programs. Whereas Shareware is commercial, Freeware is free of cost. But in these cases, the source code of the programming involved is not disclosed. However the share of MS web servers is on the rise and just like what they did to Netscape in the Browser wars, the same may happen with web servers also. Similar is the case in the database scenario also mySQl vs Oracle/SQL. Whatever be the results, there is no end to this basic war between the rich and the do-gooders. It is a perennial war with no end. I am game. Its fun. The fun is playing the game, not winning or losing. It all relates to the side you choose. Exemption of NET

Referring to Prakash's Mail, I would like to express my views. I feel exemption is a good sign for people who really worth in delivering goods rather than just for the sake of doing NET/Ph.D for the eligibility purpose. Now people have the opportunity to show their talent. One can see in the private sector, without any formal eligibility conditions, people are doing wonderful work. While appointing, one has judge the candidate practically rather than certificates. candidates from autonomus instituions show better performance than NET certified candidates. With this certificate only people with influence background only can get the job and not with the performance background. So, let us have the opportunity to show the talent then put the staff on performance base appointment than government appointment. See the productivity and decide. No use of appointing net candidates with no productivity. It is better to use some management technique to appoint Lecturer/Librarian rather using the same old technique by certificate. SR Self study Library located near Andhra Bank, Safilguda Jail, Saidabad, Hyderabad provides a large Air conditioned single ground floor hall with thirty study tables & Chairs for students preparing for competitive exams like IAS etc. The atmosphere is calm quite and clean. Every student pays around Rs 300 per month. Occupancy for 24 hours (entire day) possible. No books or reference material is provided. It may better be called Self Study Room. Incidentally above mentioned facility is the third venture in Hyderabad. Librarians should note that even empty furnished AC rooms attract readers who are ready to pay. How is that most libraries that have invested lakhs of rupees struggle to get readers or visitors? RFID Needs Improved Security, Not Just Privacy Protection

Dear LIS professioanls, I came through a finding of 'Security and Privacy Team meeting' May 2006 on RFID Security issues. I thought it to share for your information. "A working group headed by the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) has developed privacy protection guidelines for radio frequency identification (RFID) deployments. Stakeholders in the RFID industry, including technology developers, manufacturers, retailers and financial security providers, should work to make security an equally important concern. The CDT working group has released RFID deployment guidelines that address key privacy concerns, detailing how consumer data obtained using RFID technology should be handled and what notification and consent rights consumers should have. These guidelines are a positive development that will help to overcome privacy concerns that will drive market and government resistance to RFID technologies. But ensuring the security of RFID deployments is at least equally important. Guidelines for the security features required in RFID tag production and reader systems are required, as well as industry commitment to security testing of all RFID software prior to deployment. This should be done by YE07 and should be mandatory before any expansion of the RFID data field standards is approved. The CDT working group or some other industry organization should work to develop comparable guidelines designed to ensure that adequate security is built into RFID tags and readers systems from the beginning of product development. Gartner recommends that the starting point be a protection profile for Common Criteria security testing, which could be completed and approved by YE07. Enterprises deploying RFID technologies should demand proof of compliance with such standards, because most privacy failures (such as large-scale identity thefts) result from security weaknesses. The CDT's privacy guidelines are a useful step toward protecting the privacy rights of consumers whose personal information is collected using RFID technologies and toward encouraging adoption of RFID. But the guidelines are not enough, as they address security issues only tangentially. The RFID industry must also improve its security measures to prevent vulnerabilities that would enable attacks.
