The book in question is required in connection with bringing out a commemorative volume in the name of Smt. HY.Saraswathamma, on her birth centinary who was instrumental in setting up 'Makkala Kootas' in Mysore later in Bangalore for children. Incidentally she was the mother of Sri HY.Sharada Prasad, Information (Press) Secretary to Mrs. Indira Gandhi when she was the PM. Platinum Jubilee of the Indian Statistical Institute International Conference on Computing: Theory and Applications March 5 - 7, 2007 Venue: Kolkata First Call for Participation Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), an institute of national importance, was founded in 1931 by the visionary Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The Institute has earned international laurels in a wide spectrum of disciplines spanning Statistics, Mathematics, Computer and Communication Sciences, Biological Sciences, Physical and Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, and Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research. A year-long celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of the Institute during 2006-07 will comprise a series of events. Speaker: Dr. Sudhakar Varanasi, Senior Vice President, Satyam Computer Services Topic: Putting head and heart together: Technology in the service of Society: A case study of emergency services in Andhra Pradesh Time: 10-30 AM. Venue: Seminar Hall, NCSI, IISc, Bangalore Abstract: In India, about two lakh people face medical emergencies every day. Accidents at homes, workplaces and on roads happen quite frequently along with other medical, police and fire-related emergencies. The support systems required to deal with these emergencies in the society virtually do not exist in India. When an emergency occurs, we need a rapid action support system to come into force to bail the victims out of the imminent threat of loss of life or property. A systematic approach to providing total support to the victims of emergencies requires the integration of three phases (Sense, Reach and Care). A comprehensive emergency response system on the lines of 9.1.1 in the US and 112 in the EU was developed in the state of Andhra Pradesh by EMRI, a non-profit society that works on the PPP (public private partnership) model. Technology used in this project includes Computer Telephony Integration, Voice Loggers, GIS / Maps, GPS / AVLT, Mobile communications, e-learning etc. The EMRI project went live on Aug 15, 2005 and is now operational in 18 cities/towns in AP, covering about 13 million people, with an excellent support from the Government. The number of lives saved in exceeded 2000 during the past 9 months. The lessons learnt, the confidence gained and the future plans in this project will be shared during this presentation.
