Sad Demise of Prof Pangannayya

Dear Professionals, Karnataka State Library Association mourns the untimely and sad demise of Prof. N.B. Pangannayya. He served Department of LIS, University of Mysore for more than three decades with a small stint at Mangalore as University Librarian. For the last few years he worked very hard to prepare course material for LIS of Karnataka State Open University aswell organised contact programs. I too had the opportunity of being part of KSOU programs as Guest Lecturer. A very down to earth person. We have lost an efficient professional and a good teacher. May his soul rest in peace. He highlights the value of arXiv (and all open access archives) for developing country researchers. Unfortunately, developing countries themselves are doing very little to adopt open access, in spite of the fact most countries have the necessary infrastructure and competence. Sri Lanka Library Association National Conference on Library and Information Studies (NACLIS 2007) Colombo, Sri Lanka, 8-9 March 2007 Call for Papers/Participation General Theme: Information Management in the Digital Environment The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) invites members, practitioners, academics and other interested parties to participate in the National Conference on Library and Information Studies to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 8-9 March 2007. The main objective of this conference is to provide an ideal forum to the library professionals and information providers to come together and interact on subjects of mutual interest, leading to the professional development of the information community in the country. Although the SLLA is particularly interested in papers on the main theme, following sub themes will also be considered · Digital Library Initiatives: Concepts, Policies, Plans, Services, Achievements, Expectations, Lessons Learnt · Promoting the implementation of Open Access · Institutional Repositories: policies, implementation issues, technologies · Libraries and Life Long Learning · Community Information Services in the Digital Environment · Library Co-operation and Networking in the Digital Era The SLLA wishes to receive expressions of interest from potential presenters on the above themes and encourage submissions on practical rather than theoretical aspects of the themes. The intention is for members of the information community to have a chance to hear about ‘best practices’ that is emerging within the country/region. Papers may address policy or practice, technology applications, case studies or principles involved in. 1. The deadline for submitting a detailed, one-page abstract and full author details is 15 November 2006. Selection of papers is based on the abstract, and presenters will be informed of the outcome of the review panel by 15 December 2006 2. The full paper is due on 28 February 2007 and must be an original submission not published elsewhere 3. Both abstracts and full papers should be submitted by e-mail 4. Papers should be of 20 pages maximum, double spaced 5. Papers should be in English with a one-page abstract 6. 20 minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper in the Conference 7. Dear Friends, We are happy to inform that a draft Manual for Creation of Digital Archives has been put at http://www.kilaonline.org/html/library.htm to seek your response on its deformities such as grammatical/spelling mistakes, lack of clarity in expression, conceptual mistakes etc. so as to enable us to bring out the final copy without errors. The manual deals with creation of digital library equivalent archives with Winisis, GenisisWeb & GenisisCD, for less resourceful libraries in the developing countries. We have plan to add an annexure to the manual explaining the advance features of the Genisis software.Kindly inform us such innovative experiment you had done with Genisis so that we can add them to the new annexure. A web page containing links to the download sites of the software (winisis, genisis & apache) required for digital archiving of this sort will also be launched in our site for easier and convenient download by new user soon.
