Hi e'body, IT Application in Libraries and in Information Management The National Documentation Centre (NDC) of National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (NIHFW), New Delhi is an apex Documentation Center in India in the field of Population, Health & Family Welfare. The collection of the Documentation Center has grown to approximately 60,000 including bound journals. In addition to all the conventional services of a Documentation Center, it is fully automated & also provides modem services such as CD-ROM databases, On-line access at LAN, OPAC, etc. NDC has its own website and a bibliographic database of complete collection is ready to access on Internet through this site www.ndc-nihfw.org. Beside the above activities, NDC has been conducting a training course since last five years on IT Application in Libraries and Information Management. The next course seventh in its series is scheduled to be held from November 7-11, 2005. Ranganathan, Andrew Carnegie, and Open Access" Open Access Initiatives represent a new business model for publishing that is challenging commercial scholarly publishing. The question is, must it be an either-or situation, or can the two models thrive side by side -- and indeed support one another? "Open Access Publishing: The view from the trenches at Caltech" Caltech embarked on its Open Archives initiative, called Collection of Open Digital Archives (CODA), in January 2000. Since then, we have collected an institutional repository of over 4100 items. Just about half of these are Caltech doctoral theses. Other documents include: books, technical reports, preprints, reprints, oral histories, and popularizing scientific articles. High usage statistics quickly propelled CODA from a pilot study into a major strategic initiative of the Caltech library. Many of us may not know that: Google Keyword Tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordSandbox is a very useful search tool for finding synoymous words and phrases. Though the tool is meant for selecting keywords to be assigned for matching Google Ads against search terms used by searchers, it is still useful to us, librarians. We can recollect and reconsider keywords that may be better for searching. The Department of Library & Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala is organizing a 5-day international workshop on Information Literacy from 3-7 October 2005. The theme of the workshop is 'Information Skills for Learning'. This is a follow-up workshop, the first one was held in Colombo (Sri Lanka) in November 2004. The following resource persons have confirmed their participation in this IFLA-ALP and Unesco sponsored workshop: Mr. Gerald Brown, Honorary Ambassador of the International Association of School Librarianship, Canada Prof. Russell Bowden (UK) Honorary IFLA Fellow, Sri Lanka Prof. Philip J Calvert, School of Information Management, University of Wellington, New Zealand. Dr Diljit Singh, Faculty of Computer Science, University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Ms. Karen Bonanno, Australian School Libraries Association, Australia. Ms. June Wall, Australian School Libraries Association, Australia. Mrs. Pradeepa Wijetunge, Director, NILIS, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka About 30 foreign delegates from South and South East Asian countries are also participating in this workshop. In case a an intending participant requires star accommodation in a hotel, he would have to pay for it from his own sources. The nearest airport is Chandigarh (60 km). Punjabi University, the venue of the workshop, is situated 20 km off Rajpura. The climate generally remains pleasant during first week of October and the temperature during these days remains between 30 degrees celcius (maximum) and 20 degrees celcius (minimum).
