Excerpt: Last December, Google started on a wildly ambitious and somewhat controversial plan to digitize the collections of some of the world's largest university and public libraries in an effort to make hard-to-find books accessible by the click of a mouse. But out of the spotlight, a number of universities are already working on bookless, digital libraries that reflect a growing understanding of how today's tech-savvy students access information. "The notion of a library as a physical collection has long ago been altered," said Michael Keller, university librarian and director of academic information resources at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. "It's now physical and virtual." Stanford librarians aren't the only academics working on the libraries of tomorrow. Yahoo introduces audio search service

Yahoo introduced a new Internet search service that allows users to find downloadable songs, podcasts to interviews and newscasts. The free service, which is still in its testing period, is called Yahoo Audio Search and can be found at http://audio.search.yahoo.com. The audio search feature for the first time breaches the barriers between the various online music services, providing access to more than 50 million digital recordings. It allows anyone to look for an individual song within the digital collections of 16 different services, including the iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody. Yahoo Audio works much like the company's video and image services. Users type in words or phrases and are returned a list of audio files that they can click on and play. The company has integrated Yahoo Audio Search with its video search service and has invited people to submit videos and music through Media Really Simple Syndication, so it can be found by the new audio search engine. It has also integrated tools from its comparison shopping search engine, which helps users find CD prices and make purchases from a variety of retailers. 'In Case of Emergency"- ICE, A crucial bit of Information

The London incident &; now the Mumbai floods have promoted certain concerns and I share with you something useful somebody just sent. As long as everyone knows what ICE stands for, it is not a bad idea. A useful thing to add to your mobile address book! It was thought up by an ambulance man/paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones but they didn't know which numbers to call and he thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file "next of kin" under. Following the disaster in London . . . East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falkland 's war hero Simon Weston. The idea is that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone Address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also email this to more people, it won't take too many 'forwards' before lots of people will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. To commemorate the publication of the 50th volume of _The Serials Librarian_, submissions are invited that envision, review, or speculate on topics falling into one or more of the following broad categories: * The Future of Serials and Continuing Resources * The Future Role and Place of Serials in Libraries * The Future of Libraries in General. The categories are intentionally broad to allow contributors to think openly about any and all potential possibilities. This special issue will be published as volume 51, numbers 1/2 of _The Serials Librarian_. NOTE: The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2005. Authors should consult the 'Instructions for Authors' section of a recent issue of _The Serials Librarian_ for detailed guidelines and style requirements.
