Google has launched an updated version of its desktop search tool (desktop.google.com) today whose enhancements include the ability to search the full text of Adobe PDF files and the metadata of multimedia files (Music, Images &Videos). Dear subscribers I am a new member to these discussion lists . Grateful for your views on subject topic What is a Digital library ? Is it the combination of the following activities 1 Accessing library catalogue online (WEBOPAC) 2 accessing online commercial databases through Internet 3 creation of databases of subject specific or document specific (PhD Thesis; Project Reports ; reprints ) 4 Communicating electronically among librarians and user population In addition to the above anything more is included in the concept of digital library ? . How far the concept developed from theoretical aspect to practicality ? I presume that digital libraries helps librarians to improve service efficiencies to their patrons. Can I request subscribers of these lists to list few advantages they gained in their service efficiency due to digitalisation to their library .( preferably own experience ). Dear friends, English may have transformed the world, but with non-native speakers now outnumbering native speakers 3 to 1, the language is being reshaped in return. In Asia, alone, the number of English users has topped 350 million, roughly the combined populations of the United States, Britain and Canada. Please read the recent article "NOT THE QUEEN'S ENGLISH?", published in the NEWSWEEK (7 March 2005), and you will find answer why do we need high proficiency in English lanugage.
