Training Program on INFORMATION; grants available An International Training Program on "INFORMATION": STIMULATE Scientific and Technological Information Management in Universities and Libraries: an Active Training Environment (Edition 5) Announcement Information about this training program can be found on the WWW starting from: http://www.vub.ac.be/BIBLIO/itp/ The program is planned to take place mainly in Brussels, Belgium, from June to August 31, 2005 The initiative has been approved by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) and is sponsored by the Belgian Government (the directorate named DGOS since December 2002). This fits in a series of similar international training activities that have been organized since 1991, named MIST 1, 2, 3, KNOW-HOW, and STIMULATE 1, 2, 3 and 4. This initiative is aimed primarily at persons with a university degree (Bachelor or Master), who work in universities, information and documentation centers, and libraries, including of course university libraries, and who have a few years of practical experience. The term Active Training Environment in the title of the training program reflects our wish to create an environment in which each participant is stimulated to get involved actively, supported by the lecturers and the infrastructure provided by the training program. This fits well into the general, worldwide trend away from "teaching" to "learning management". Aims: The main aim of this International Training Program is to offer a stimulating learning environment to participants, who have a function as information intermediary in the area of science and technology, so as to sharpen their skills in collecting, storing, retrieving, presenting and managing information, which can be of great benefit to the teaching and research activities going on in their institute and to the further development of their organisation and region. More specific objectives are: -- to provide participants with a clearer view on the importance of information in general and for their environment in particular, -- to guide them in retrieving information that is publicly accessible on an international scale, and -- to learn them to store, organise, present, manage, publish information resources at personal, institutional, regional or national level. After being actively involved in this International Training Program, every participant will have improved the ability -- to appreciate and explain the importance of access to information for their organisation -- to retrieve information from the Internet -- to present information to users and potential users, using appropriate information technology -- to store information for later retrieval and access by potential users, using information technology -- to train interested persons in the use and management of information, using appropriate presentation techniques -- to apply quantitative methods in decision making related to information systems and services -- to contribute to the planning of the (further) development of an information service -- to communicate through the Internet with users of information, information providers, colleagues,� Contents: It is our intention to organise the sessions in such a way that --the first month = introduction level, --the second month = intermediate level, and --the third month = more advanced level. Thanks to this approach and organisation, it may make sense to participate exceptionally during only one or two of the three months, depending on expertise. However, the available scholarships are granted only to persons who will participate for the full three months. To start with, the participants are offered an orientation tour of the University and the Library. Then some of the following subjects are covered. Of course, due to the limited available time, not all the mentioned subjects can be discussed in each training program, but a SELECTION will be made by the organisers, depending on the availability of suitable expert lecturers. Text editing; word processing; desktop publishing. Presentation of data, using a microcomputer. Creating charts to present information. Data communication; computer networks. Internet. About half of the time, the participants are guided by experts who are invited to the university. They use the other half time to solve problems, to make exercises, to use microcomputers and the Internet, to prepare discussions, for self study... Besides the formal, guided course activities, the participants have access like any regular student at our university --to several rooms equipped with microcomputers connected to the Internet, --to the university library which offers printed material, CD-ROMs and PCs with Internet access, --to the university restaurant and to sport facilities at low student prices. In addition to the courses taking place at the university campus, study visits are organised. Possible visits: --to the Royal (National) Library, in Brussels, Belgium --to the European Patent Office in Brussels, Belgium --to the Information Service of the Geology Department of the Royal Museum on Africa, in Tervuren near Brussels, Belgium --to the inter-university postgraduate school on information and library science at the University of Antwerp, Belgium --to the library of the University of Antwerp in Wilrijk, Belgium --to the human sciences library of the University of Antwerp in old Antwerp city, Belgium --to the old central library and to the modern science and technology library of the KUL (university) in Leuven, Belgium --to the VLIZ marine science information and documentation center near the sea coast in Oostende / Ostend, Belgium --to the library of the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen / Antwerp, Belgium --to the library of the University of Gent / Ghent, Belgium --to the Documentation Department of the KIT (the Royal Tropical Institute), and to the high school on libraries, documentation and information, both in Amsterdam, Nederland / The Netherlands --to IFLA headquarters and the National, Royal Library in Den Haag / The Hague, in Nederland / The Netherlands More culturally oriented guided visits are also organised; these may include trips to the old cities of Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, Amsterdam, and to the North Sea coast. At the end of the course, each participant completes a presentation supported by slides managed on computer, with constructive comments on the training program experienced and with concrete recommendations to the director of their own organisation. Social activities planned: -- Welcome reception with drinks and appetizers. -- Evening with tasting of some of the world famous Belgian beers and some Belgian food. -- Farewell gathering with drinks and appetizers. Participation and registration; tuition fee and costs: Grants: Participation is free of charge (!) for 14 participants from developing countries, who are selected by the organisers, VL.I.R. (the Flemish Inter-university Council) and DGOS. They also receive a grant to cover the costs of accommodation and an airplane return ticket. (Do NOT send requests for a grant or any other correspondence about the grants to the organisers, but only to VLIR: scholarships(a)vlir.be) If this procedure is not suitable for you, you can ask your local Belgian embassy for a printed version of the application form for the grant, or you can ask more information through email: scholarships(a)vlir.be (or Maarten.Timmermans(a)vlir.be). The ideal participant applying for a grant is younger than 40 years, and will be able to apply what has been learned directly in a professional scientific or technical environment afterwards. Normal registration: Besides the persons who receive a grant from the Belgian Government through VLIR, 6 persons can participate after paying a tuition fee that is small in comparison with similar programs. The costs mentioned do NOT include air travel, meals and accommodation, but do include transport from the airport upon arrival, course materials, study visits and social activities. The cost of living in Belgium is not exceptional. -To participate during the full period: 2400 Euros -Exceptionally, persons who cannot participate for the whole period can nevertheless participate during 2 months only (1800 Euros) or during 1 month only (1000 Euros). It makes a lot of sense to attend for instance the first month or the first two months only. It makes less sense to participate only during the second or the third month, as introductions to some activities or topics may be missed. -To participate to particular items selected from the program: 30 Euros per half day. If we can book many weeks in advance, then we can normally find basic accommodation for about 300 euro per month; however, a late receipt of the tuition fee forces us to book a more expensive room. Dear Sir/madam Here I am pleased to inform you that the MyLISA(Mysore Library and Information Scienctist Association)in collabration with SDM_IMD conducted a 4 days workshop on "Automation of Libraries" for its memebrs from 11th to 14 th of Dec 2004.The work shop statred with the basics of computers. We learnt how to utilize the maximum of MS Word in dail library operations Eg: Creating a template of Indent form etc.Second day we learnt how to create a database using MS-Access.On 13th they taught us to develop a database using WINISIS software using MARC.And developing digital library using GSDL(green stone opensource software) and Library manager.(open source). On the fourth and last day they taught us how to select a library software and informed us about the criteria one should consider while selecting a library software.The important aspects of this workshop was the validectory function, where our honourable president Pro.Shalini R Urs gave key note address on Future technologies in Information Management.IN her speech our president mentioned that in future the LIST Serve could be a future libray , where in information can be exchanged or provided in a fraction of second.As the Kalvin Warwick a computing scientist has reightly pointed out that " The human race which has dominated the world, perhaps 10,000 years will going to see its domination come to an end".On the whole the workshop was highly rewarding to participted librarins and LIS professionals aspiring to acquire computer knowledge in the field of Library and Information science. The output was remarkable that The participant of the workshop decided to automate thier library using existing system.MR. Nagaraja Rao who is a 70 years old who's zeal for learning things inspired us to know more.Many thanks to the People of SDM-IMd Library for thier exeptional hospitality and MyLISA to conduct this workshop. Here is a news item of interest to all research and higher education librarians. Arun Google Print has added a new question to its FAQ: I'm a librarian. How can I get Google to come and scan my library? Sorry, but we're not expanding our relationships with libraries at this time. However, we may expand to add additional libraries in the future. If you're interested in letting us know about your library's special collection, please email us at print-support(a)google.com and include the size of your collection, any specialization or special content, how much of your content is already digital, and what languages you cover. Dear All, This is almost the same case happens everywhere, the librarians' hands are tight to impose any strict rules like fine implementation etc... One policy libraries can implement with the prior permission from the authority ----- send 3-6 reminders on a regular basis having an interval, keep the reminder #along with the reminder in the subject line itself, if the book/s still not returned by the professor/s then send a final mail mentioning that we are force to deduct the amount from the salary to replace the book as we are assuming that the book issued by you is lost , and give copy to accounts department along with the attachment of the reminders. This amount can be accumulated under one head for library and library can purchase the same book/s or the books on high demand utilizing this amount. If the authority is keen to recover the loss then good to implement this policy , prior to implement this policy please put a notice publicly in your premise and try to inform all regarding the change in the policy of possessing books more than 6 months after the due date . I 'm sure this will surely bring back all the books . For rare books charge the price three times of the cost.Try to Convince the authority saying enough time/reminder is given to return, it is charged only after 6 months . Flooded by complaints from students and teachers on important books that are off the shelves for years, the university authorities have begun an exercise to trace them. But the effort may have come too late. Many of the missing books were borrowed nearly 30 years ago and the borrowers are either retired or dead. At best, a few of the habitual defaulters may be traced and only a few books recovered. "We cannot deny that there are some teachers and scholars who are in the habit of not returning books after borrowing them from the university's libraries. We are working out measures to stop the practice," said Saumitra Sarkar, the librarian. Bound by rules, the university cannot fine a teacher if he or she returns a book late. "We recently introduced a system of giving repeated reminders to defaulting teachers. We are now working on steps that may be taken if the reminders do not work," said Sarkar. To get books back from research scholars in time, the authorities have introduced fines. Earlier, only students had to pay a fine if they failed to return their books on the stipulated date. Last year, the university increased the rate of fines for students. They are now charged 10 paise for every day's delay in the first week and a rupee a day after that. The scholars are now being fined at the same rate. University sources said the catalogues in its central and departmental libraries show a large number of books, but they are never found on the racks. In all, Calcutta University has nearly 12 lakh text and reference books. In addition, the libraries house maps, journals, theses and commission reports. A student alleged: "Often a rare book issued to a teacher is never returned to the library." "We have also come across teachers who borrowed books at the time of joining and never gave them back." Another student alleged that many of the teachers have in their possession books that are not available anywhere else in the country. Google To Scan Books From Big Libraries SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Google Inc. is trying to establish an online reading room for five major libraries by scanning stacks of hard-to-find books into its widely used Internet search engine. The ambitious initiative announced late Monday gives Mountain View, Calif.-based Google the right to index material from the New York public library as well as libraries at four universities _ Harvard, Stanford, Michigan and Oxford in England. The Michigan and Stanford libraries are the only two so far to agree to submit all their material to Google's scanners. The New York library is allowing Google to include a small portion of its books no longer covered by copyright while Harvard is confining its participation to 40,000 volumes so it can gauge how well the process works. Oxford wants Google to scan all its books originally published before 1901. Scanning books so they can be read through computers isn't new. Both Google and Amazon.com already have programs that offer online glimpses of new books while an assortment of other sites for several years have provide digital access to some material in libraries scattered around the country. But Google's latest commitment could have the biggest impact yet, given the breadth of material that the company hopes to put into its search engine, which has become renowned for its processing speed, ease of use and accuracy. ``It's a significant opportunity to bring our material to the rest of the world,'' said Paul LeClerc, president of the New York Public Library. ``It could solve an old problem: If people can't get to us, how can we get to them?'' Librarians are also excited about the prospect of creating a digital record for the reams of valuable material written long before computers were conceived. ``This is the day the world changes,'' said John Wilkin, a University of Michigan librarian working with Google. ``It will be disruptive because some people will worry that this is the beginning of the end of libraries. But this is something we have to do to revitalize the profession and make it more meaningful.'' The project gives Google's search engine another potential drawing card as it faces stiffening competition for Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN. Attracting visitor traffic is crucial to Google's financial health because the company depends on revenue generated by people clicking on advertising links posted next to the main body of search results. Scanning the library books figures to be a daunting task, even for a cutting edge company such as Google, whose online index of 8 billion Web pages already has revolutionized the way people look for information. Michigan's library alone contains 7 million of its library volumes _ about 132 miles of books. Google hopes to get the job done at Michigan within six years, Wilkin said. Harvard's library is even larger with 15 million volumes. Virtually all of that material will be off limits Google shows it can scan the material without losing or damaging anything, said Harvard professor Sidney Verba, who also is director of the university's library. ``The librarians at Harvard are very punctilious about protecting their great treasures,'' Verba said. The project also poses other prickly issues, such as how to convert material written in foreign languages, and the issue of protecting copyrighted books. As it does with new books already included in its search engine, Google will only allow its users to view the bibliographies or other snippets of copyrighted books scanned from the libraries. The search engine will provide unrestricted access to all material in the public domain _ work no longer covered by copyrights. The books scanned from libraries will be included in the same Google index the spans the Web.
